: CBC HD Hockey - Split from Official CBC Thread
otown47 2007-12-30, 08:42 AM I thought last weeks game was WS not HD...we talked about it here because the PQ was so good.....but not HD good. Also the CBC removes the HD logo when its not HD and I remember there was no logo last week....like last night.
Since I'm in the collection/distribution end of the business I see what facilities are used to bring the game from the venue to the Broadcast Centre. Dec 22 and Dec 29 were both WS not HD. They came in on the same digital path. The info I receive does not specify which truck is used.
otown47 2007-12-30, 09:10 AM Thanks for that Marc......I assume you mean December 22 and 29....:)
So something IS different.....the resulting programs were like night and day.
TopShelf 2008-01-06, 10:55 AM Last night's Sens/Lightning game was of course SD upconvert (WS), not much improvement over regular SD. I watched the Leafs/Flyers game on Centre Ice (chnl 461), the picture quality was absolutely horrible as it normally is. Living in the Ottawa viewing region has certainly placed restrictions on how much HD Hockey you receive throughout the NHLs regular season. I really wish CBCHD would broadcast the Leafs Saturday Night HD Games on an alternate channel. Problem is most people would be watching Leafs HD and the minority would watch the Sens games on Chnl 513. Last night I could hardly wait for the Sens game to end so they would switch over to the Leafs game in HD....

Maybe for you, but I got the NHL CI version and it was an unbelievably horrible quality picture. The NHL CI SD channels have consistently been some of the worst PQ I have ever seen of all time. Some of the time I can't even tell who has the puck it is so bad.
Why wasn't the WS version broadcast on one of the NHL CI HD channels? That would have been a lot more enjoyable and watchable.

Looks like you prefer PQ over HQ (hockey quality)...

I'm not sure if that would be the case in the Ottawa viewing region any more.
oilblue 2008-01-06, 08:34 PM From the replay of the games last night, the Oilers/Rangers game cut away at the end of regulation. Nothing from OT or the shootout was replayed. Odd. Apparently coverage jumped to the Calgary game?...
Didn't see the replay myself as we watched it live, but heard about the issue so thought I'd post here.
Juggie 2008-01-14, 03:40 PM I think the summit series had better PQ then some of the NHL CI Channels.
sillywalk 2008-03-22, 10:29 PM Both the Montreal and Toronto games looked like crap tonight. Where were the flipping HD trucks?
darrylr 2008-03-22, 10:32 PM The Ottawa/Toronto game looked great in HD tonight in Ottawa. There seemed to be a problem with the scoreboard at the end (it showed the leafs with more goals) but other that and a short audio dropout it was great. Maybe the feed on CBC in Montreal didn't pick up the Sens/Leafs games in HD. The Habs games was likely HD on RDS though.
james99 2008-03-22, 10:41 PM Next week the CBC is forced to show a quality team. Of course they are playing the non-playoff bound Leafs.
jumpy27 2008-03-23, 01:07 AM Don't worry, you'll be able to watch all the quality teams play other quality teams in the playoffs.
moody 2008-03-23, 07:52 AM The Ottawa/Toronto game looked great both on Expressvu 802 and on OTA CBC here in Ottawa. I was a bit surprised when it switched to the Montreal game at the end - it looked worse than any WS SD game I've ever seen from CBC. In particular, the main camera looked really bad. Not sure what the difference was, but being an Ottawa fan I've seen CBC broadcast many WS SD games and none of them have ever looked that bad.
PakMan 2008-03-23, 12:36 PM This was my first CBCHD experience and I have to say other than the sound dropping and the Sens being dropped in the third. The quality was excellent.
Now I have to agree that when they switched to the habs game it seemed like watching SD. It didn't seem like taking a step back. But I'm not complaining.

As seen on BEV Channels 802 (Toronto/Ottawa) and 804 (Boston/Montreal)
The Montreal game was not in HD but rather widescreen SD a special abomination that the CBC inflicts on its viewers. For some reason the first period in Montreal actually looked pretty good. Something happened between the first and second periods. From the start of the second period to the end of the game the WS SD main camera just looked terrible.
BTW, the sound cut in the Ottawa game at the end of the second period was the CBC's fault. Ron MacLean even apologized for it just before the commercial.

How/why is it an abomination? CBC broadcast 4 NHL games yesterday, and didn't have enough trucks for HD coverage of all four. The choice for the Habs/Bruins was:
- 4:3 SD upconvert
- SD widescreen upconvert
To me, SD widescreen is the clear choice. Obviously isn't not as good as HD, but it beats 4:3.
james99 2008-03-23, 05:41 PM In this case, 4x3 upconvert would have probably looked better.
polaris 2008-03-24, 12:33 AM Can you or someone else explain why? Wont we see more with widescreen even if its SD?
roger1818 2008-03-24, 07:19 PM Even in SD the PQ when they switched from the Ottawa game to the Montreal game was much worse. The colours on the score board even seemed wrong.
