: CBC HD Hockey - Split from Official CBC Thread
nfitz 2006-10-30, 03:00 PM Hmm, looking at this weeks HD schedule (http://www.cbc.ca/hdtv/schedule/CBC_HD_nextweek1.pdf), the first Saturday game will be Toronto/Buffalo in widescreen - except in Ottawa where it will be Ottawa/Carolina in HD?
Is that really correct? Why not run the Ottawa game HD in Toronto ... or at least Montreal, as well? Anyone who wants to watch the Laughs can watch the SD.
james99 2006-10-30, 03:03 PM That is strange. Doesn't make sense to show the main game in SD WS and the alternative feed in HD.

....not strange to some of us !!!!!
Andrew 2006-10-31, 01:50 PM But Rogers does not show CBOT-DT in Ottawa, only the Toronto feed so unless you have OTA you can't watch it in Ottawa either. Does BEV or *choice provide CBOT-DT?
gobrigavitch 2006-10-31, 03:30 PM The fact is, good SD can look as good as HD. PBS has lots of widescreen SD that looks amazing.
No matter how you look at it good SD is no where near the quality of HD. If you don't see that big of a difference, my guess is you are either watching on an EDTV or small HDTV. Pay attention to the wide angle shots and audience shots, as they show a dramatic difference between SD and HD.
james99 2006-10-31, 05:48 PM I have a 106" HDTV. It looked great. The game after looked better.
Hey, it's not my fault I have a good tv.
I'm just saying SD WS can look very good.
SonyWE610Owner 2006-10-31, 06:54 PM HFS james99. 106"! WTF brand/model? Front projection?

Marc any idea how they are going to pull this off?
If ott is in HD, will this be on CBC Toronto HD? As thats what rogers (and probally bev) provides.

Is that really correct?I think it's a mistake. The HNIC Schedule (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/hnic/tvschedule.html) shows the Leafs game in HD and the Sens in SD (as usual).

Yes, according to this article by Bill Houston of the Globe, The Leafs/Sabres are in HD.
"Yet, on Saturday night, the CBC's Hockey Night in Canada national telecast will originate from Buffalo, where the Toronto Maple Leafs will play the Sabres. The CBC will shoot that game in HDTV. Why couldn't the CBC also provide HDTV coverage for the football game in Toronto, just two hours away, the next afternoon?
CBC spokesman Jeff Keay said that option was considered, but the network felt it was too risky in terms of packing up the HD equipment in Buffalo and moving it to Toronto in time for the football telecast."

Interesting. I checked the HNIC schedule on Monday and at that time it showed the Ottawa-Carolina game in HD. It was probably either a typo, or they were originally planning on showing the Ottawa game in HD, but changed their mind when they realized that CBOT-DT is only availble OTA.
roger1818 2006-11-02, 12:21 PM CBC spokesman Jeff Keay said that option was considered, but the network felt it was too risky in terms of packing up the HD equipment in Buffalo and moving it to Toronto in time for the football telecast."
He is right, it would be risky. According to a CBC cameraman (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3321489&postcount=127), it takes 2 hours to do a complete tear down after they are off-air and the truck needs to be in position 12 hours ahead of a game (for a hockey game at least, they may need more time for football as the stadium is larger).
If the game goes off-air at 10:00pm, the tear down will be complete at 12:00am and the truck will be at the Rogers Centre around 2:00am (assuming there are no delays) only 9.5 hours before the 12:30pm broadcast start.
Having said that, with a second set of cameras, cables and mics, it might be possible as they could do most of the setup ahead of time and do most of the tear down in Buffalo after the studio truck has left (they use a separate truck for all the cameras, cables and mics anyway).
nfitz 2006-11-02, 12:30 PM ... they realized that CBOT-DT is only availble OTA.Aren't local cable companies in Ottawa required to carry local HD channels?
roger1818 2006-11-02, 01:57 PM Aren't local cable companies in Ottawa required to carry local HD channels?
From what I gather, when it comes to HD, the requirement for cable companies to carry local HD channels is still ambiguous. I suspect Rogers just hasn't gotten around to obtaining CBOT-DT yet and continue to provide CBLT-DT in Ottawa instead. They probably have some sort of excuse of technical difficulties.
Bruno Landry 2006-11-04, 10:01 AM HNIC tonight :
According to http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/hnic/tvschedule.html,
TOR vs BUF is in HD.
According to http://www.cbc.ca/hdtv/schedule/CBC_HD_nextweek1.pdf :
CAR vs OTT is in HD.
According to http://www.cbc.ca/television/ :
VAN vs COL is in HD.
But only one game will be in HD...
No word of HD on the CFL Semi-finals.
darrylr 2006-11-04, 04:47 PM Well one of those games involves the team from Hogtown so I would put my money on that game being the HD one.
026163 2006-11-04, 06:06 PM cbc must like to give the fans from all these other teams a slightr bit of hope, just so they can be disapointed at 7:00 when the leafs r on in HD
thegman 2006-11-04, 07:19 PM leafs/buffalo game.. anyone getting major jaggies?
