There is no broadcast bitrate over 19.4 Mbps. You must be reading some (Tag) information that is not correct. The only way to know the bitrate is to check the filesize and then divide by the number of seconds in the file.

I bet you'll get a number between 12 and 19Mbps.

For example, if you record two hours and look at the file size:

16 GB * 8 bits/byte / 7600 seconds = 17 Mbps
(roughly, not taking 1024 squared into account) but close enough.

Yeah, I get 12.96 Mbps.

Versus didn't show the first two Ducks-Canucks games in HD. Their schedule shows games 3,4,6 & 7 will be in HD.
Then how did TSN get replays of all the goals in HD? Versus must have broadcast the games in HD for TSN to show these highlights.

rogers1818,

some providers may compress, but its been said time and time again that as of now rogers does not appear to do that and instead passes a clean untouched signal. express-vu on the other hand does not. (they change almost everything to 720p and do who knows what else)

The Versus schedule (http://www.versus.com/nw/article/view/18010/?tf=NHLArticleWrapper.tpl) must be wrong about HD for those first two games in Anaheim. Maybe game 5 too.

Juggie, Rogers passes through, unchanged, the signal they get from the source, but it is compressed. MPEG-2, I expect.

Stoakley Audio, you could have a US broadcaster produce the broadcast, have them throw in some isolation shots and an interview camera for us, and we could supply our own commentators....that would work for me......

I can understand why that wouldn't necessarily work for you...:)

Hey Otown,

True :) However, a lot of American teams that come to Toronto do just that. However, "us", being sophisticated hockey and sports fans in general, wouldn't go for that and be crying to the high heavens about being ripped off from poor, ugly looking broadcasts.... hey wait, isn't that what this thread is all about??? LOL... I kidd... I kidd....

Cheers!

The backhaul bit rate, the link between the venue and the broadcaster's facility, it typically 38-80 Mbits/second. We use the highest available rate. The limiting factors are the fibre link and the encoding hardware. Transmission is done at the ATSC standard which runs about 19.5 for everything. Video takes up about 17 Mbits/sec of that 19.5.

Juggie, It may be true that Rogers compresses the signal at the same rate as the original broadcast station, but they do compress the signal, just like broadcast stations compress their signal OTA. Not doing so would require way too much bandwidth.

Not doing so would require way too much bandwidth. All digital broadcasts are encoded into MPEG-2. The bitrate that OTA uses is about 19.5 Mbps and apparently that is the bandwidth that Rogers uses for each channel.

...and therefore Rogers does no further compression of the signal. It is passed to the customer at the same bitrate it arrives at Rogers.

The bitrate will however, vary by channel, not because of Rogers, but because of the bitrate used by the broadcaster, which typically varies from about 12-18 Mbps depending on if the broadcaster is multicasting, format (720P/1080i), etc. It is the broadcaster that does the compression to a maximum of 19.4 Mbps, it's not Rogers. Some service providers do further compression or format changes due to bandwidth limitations of transponders, their system etc.

This thread is about Hockey though, not bitrates. If you do a search for bitrates and the service provider's name, you'll find plenty of previous threads on the topic.

I watched the Hockey game last night in HD and it was very jerky, the other HD Channels were fine. Since no one else have posted this issue I assume it was a local problem. Last nights game was the first time it has happened. BTW I am on Shaw in Red Deer, AB.

As I continue to follow this thread I find that although we're all talking about CBC HD hockey, we have quite different offerings from our various providers. This seems to result in some people commenting on poor quality broadcasts which I don't necessarily experience. My personal experience this playoff year is that I'm seeing almost all the games in HD or upconverted SD. This is quite an increase and improvement over the past 2 1/2 years. I seem to remember watching the Finals the first year I had HD on an American network (ABC? at the time). That was the only HD broadcast of hockey I had access to, so sorry CBC but I missed your broadcasts that year. Now I can only say that with TSN and CBC both providing HD I've watched A LOT of hockey.

GO OTTAWA---GO VANCOUVER. GO HD HOCKEY!

Cheers.

roger1818,

as 57 stated, there is at least with rogers no further compression. Rogers certainly does not receive a uncompressed raw feed from cbc (or anyone else) they receive the same 1080i MPEG-2 we see at our end.

Just for clarification of my previous post, i meant rogers does not compress the signal MORE then it already is. Of course it is already MPEG-2. I assumed i didn't have to state that! Rogers does not adjust the signal further, where as some providers do.

Overheard on the radio today the explanation for no HD for the Canucks/Ducks games in Anaheim.

CBC was scheduled to send an HD production truck to Anaheim to provide HD for the series for HNIC and for Versus to piggyback to. Actually, the CBC was going to provide HD for all games that it was covering in the second round (unless all three Canadian teams made it).

The problem? One of their HD trucks was in an accident late last week making it "unroadworthy" and preventing them from sending it to Anaheim. That was the explanation that CBC staffers gave to Rick Ball of TEAM 1040 in Vancouver.

That doesn't really explain why the pq was so bad last night, does it? I'm watching the Ottawa game right now (OTA HD) and the PQ is way better than for the Canucks game.

PQ in the Ottawa game was very good tonight, colours were less dull and the image was nice and sharp, more like NBC's coverage.

I was referring to the ExVu feed for the Canucks game last night that was on 802, far better then the Sens game tonight on same channel.
