According to both the CBC HD Schedule (http://www.cbc.ca/hdtv/schedule/CBC_HD_currentweek2.pdf) and the ROUND 2 Stanley Cup broadcast schedule (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/stanleycup2007/features/broadcast-schedule.html), games 1 & 2 in Anaheim were in upconverted WS.

Having said that, it sounds to me like there is a problem with the picture on CBUT-DT.

Why couldn't CBC HD piggyback and get the HD feed from Versus HD? If not, does anybody know if it's possible to get OLN/Versus HD in Vancouver? OTA?

Also, big favour to ask - has anyone PVR'ed or recorded the entire Dallas-Vancouver game 1 in HD? PM me if you do. It's the only game I'm missing since I was at the game. I have all the other games recorded in HD, and CBC doesn't have this game in it's "Full Game Video" archive - not that I wouldn't prefer the HD version anyway. I will trade with my other recordings or even pay for a copy of Game 1 in HD. Thanks.

ya it's frustrating that Versus has their HD camera's in the building beside CBC's SD Camera's. What is so bad about sharing resources in that situation, both networks could use the same video, and then overlay their own sound/graphics on top. These are networks covering two different nations, it's not like they are competing.

^^ if you think you can get Versus HD over-the-air in Vancouver, you are out of your mind. U won't find it on cable/satellite either.

It takes more than just HD cameras to produce a program in HD. The editing equipment inside the truck must be HD.

ya i mean versus would send an edited HD feed of the game back to Toronto, with everything but their graphics and commentary, and then the CBC could add everything in afterwards.

Versus didn't show the first two Ducks-Canucks games in HD. Their schedule shows games 3,4,6 & 7 will be in HD.

Yah...and then maybe we could send someone to clone your days work and have someone else put their name on it and then watch 30 people lose their jobs......
Please folks it is only television......

Retransmission or rebroadcast of an NHL Hockey Game without the written consent of the National Hockey League or the CBC is in direct violation of copyright.

Gotta agree with Zornt there.
Not to mention the fact that if you want to watch that style of game - watch the Olympics or other big shows that use pool feeds and see what the quality of games are like. You have no idea what's coming next, where you're going to and it's pretty much chaos overall.

Directors / Producers like to have control over ALL aspects of their production, and if that means their truck is SD while the other trucks is HD, so be it. It will get better as more and more HD trucks come into commission.

Remember kids as Zornt stated... 'please folks, it is only television.'

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go sit on my ass for 8 hours as I watch the Jays lose to Texas again :)

Cheers!

If the choice is watching a game from a pool feed vs not watching the game at all, HD or SD, then I'll take the pool feed game anytime. Maybe we don't need a "cadillac" production for every CBC game.

...BTW, the production for last nights game was great.....the PQ was a little soft but I didn't really see any macroblocking or pixelization. The audio was great too...good audience sounds.

The afternoon NBC game had sharper PQ but with pixelization....and of course 2 channel audio.

I wonder if CBC uses more compression to minimize the risk of macro-blocking and other broadcasters (NBC, TSN, etc) use less compression to get a sharper picture at the expense of occasional macro-blocking. If so, which do people prefer?

Hey Otown,

If that was the case, then we wouldn't need companies like CBC or TSN to produce hockey because you would basically have the home team produce each series and then feed it out to everyone. You would have a biased broadcast ( unless it was a neutral broadcaster - and before you say it, yes, I would agree the CBC 'might' be biased with regards to Toronto, but that's a whole other thread :) ) and not everyone would be happy.

I think that makes sense... LOL... sorry, been watching baseball all afternoon with the boys from Texas - good guys, too bad the sport is so sloooooooow... LOL!

cheers!

Not sure what factors are consider in the outcome, but for whatever reasons, the Canuck games are the BEST HD that HNIC has ever had in the years that I have had HD. The feed blows away ANY other games I have seen on the CBC network.

zornt: I get that, but I'm not exactly retransmissioning or rebroadcasting an NHL Hockey Game. It's just for personal use. ;) Plus there is no full game video of Game 1 available on CBC's site like all the other playoff games.

Just recording Game 3 between Anaheim at Vancouver right now. I've noticed that CBUT HD (CBC Vancouver/West HD) has a bit rate of 15 Mbps according to CapDVHS, but CBC HD has a bit rate of 80 Mbps! Can anyone confirm that CBUT HD has a quality downgrade compared to CBC HD?

mmadness, what is your source for CBC HD and how are you feeding it to CapDVHS? All service providers will give you a compressed signal, and the box they gave you will uncompress it so you are probably seeing the post de-compression bit rate.

There is no broadcast bitrate over 19.4 Mbps. You must be reading some (Tag) information that is not correct. The only way to know the bitrate is to check the filesize and then divide by the number of seconds in the file.

I bet you'll get a number between 12 and 19Mbps.

For example, if you record two hours and look at the file size:

16 GB * 8 bits/byte / 7600 seconds = 17 Mbps
(roughly, not taking 1024 squared into account) but close enough.

I don't know the bitrate but I watched the game on cbut-dt OTA and thought the PQ was poor - similar to if not worse than the upconverted signal from Anaheim.

I get the signal through a Motorola DCT-6200, which is firewired to my computer.

After recording the 1st period on CBUT HD, and the 2nd in CBC HD, I compared the playing bitrates in VLC and they seemed similar...
