: CBC HD Hockey - Split from Official CBC Thread
moosebump 2007-02-19, 02:50 PM Bruno,
Here is the response I got from CBC when I asked about HD coverage for the playoffs. Doesn't this contradict your post which appears to be an announcement from CBC itself? Maybe it just means that it will be ready for the playoffs but it will be staying in the east until the fall. I didn't ask whether they were increasing HD coverage for western games but just for the playoffs in general. Maybe because I'm writing from North Van he assumed I wanted to know if the west was getting a truck.

Thank you for taking the time to write to CBC Television regarding HNIC.
We welcome audience feedback as an essential part of our programming decisions.
There is only one CBC HD mobile right now and a new one will be stationed in the West next fall.
We realize the situation is not perfect and that we can't please everyone. It's a Catch-22.
We have included your email in a report that circulates weekly among all senior executives, producers and programmers at CBC, including the President and CEO, Robert Rabinovitch.

During the playoffs the CBC doesn't know where any truck will be more than about a week in advance and even then it can change with the results of one game. Until they know when and where teams are playing, they don't want to commit a truck to a specific region.
It comes down to where can they get the best use of the trucks (a combination of number of games and viewership of those games). Unfortunately the cities in the west are much further apart making it harder for the truck to travel between them in the short time between games, not to mention the later start reducing the number of viewers nationally. The distribution of the game will also be a factor; nationally broadcast games will be given priority over locally or regionally broadcast games.
During the regular season they have a whole week between games so they can move it to any city in the league so it only makes sense to use one HD truck to show the first (eastern) nationally broadcast evening game and the other HD truck to show the second (western) nationally broadcast evening game. Afternoon and locally broadcasted games will probably use a WS truck until a third truck has been built.
zornt 2007-02-21, 12:11 PM The new CBC HD mobile, Encore, is currently being commissioned in Toronto. After commissioning is complete, there will be some staff training.
Their current plan will be to have Premier, their existing HD mobile, work the West for playoffs and have Encore work the East. Given that the mobile is finished and with training completed before the end of the NHL regular season, I would not be surprised to see the mobile working before the first round of the playoffs.
wprager 2007-02-23, 10:03 AM You think CBC-HD will show the Ottawa/Buffalo tilt tomorrow or keep within their comfort zone and go with the Toronto/Philly yawner? I mean, as much as Leafs Nation love their Leafs, even they know which game would be a better spectacle.
Come on, CBC, get your heads in the game!

Not a chance, the CBC or their commentaters don't even know the Sens exist.
roger1818 2007-02-23, 10:41 AM Well the HD schedule (http://www.cbc.ca/hdtv/schedule/CBC_HD_nextweek2.pdf) says Toronto at Philadelphia as does the HNIC schedule (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/hnic/tvschedule.html).
There is no mention of the Ottawa/Buffalo game on the HD schudle so it will probably be in SD 4:3 and CBOT-DT will probably carry the Toronto game.
One funny thing is the HD schedule says that they are showing an Atlanta @ Ottawa game in WS in the afternoon. Since Ottawa isn't playing Atlanta this week, they must be showing a repeat of last weeks game ;).
roger1818 2007-02-23, 11:06 AM According to an article by the Toronto Star (http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/179976) a couple weeks ago and an editorial in the Globe and Mail (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20070126.TRUTH26/TPStory/TPSports/Television/), it sounds like the CBC will likely keep HNIC.
The one thing that worries me though is that apparently TSN will get "a Canadian series in at least one round of the NHL playoffs." Unless the CBC gets regional broadcasting rights for that series, local fans of that team will require either cable or satellite service to see their team play. If the CBC does get regional broadcasting rights it could be a good thing if they pick up the TSN feed, as TSN is likely to rent an HD truck for the game where as CBC would save their HD trucks for the nationally broadcast games.
99gecko 2007-02-23, 11:30 AM hey Roger,
Sorry if I have missed something.
There is no mention of the Ottawa/Buffalo game on the HD schudle so it will probably be in SD 4:3 and CBOT-DT will probably carry the Toronto game.
Why would CBOT-DT be carrying the national game and not the regional Buffalo/Ottawa game? I thought the Buf/Ott game was to be shown in Ontario east region only? Or did you mean CBLT-DT would carry the national game (as they should)? Just curious.
I can't believe for a minute that CBC could let HNIC go to CTV. It's a brand for them. Playoff hockey is too big of a draw for TSN to reliquish an entire series to CBC, IMHO.
cheers,
99gecko (just one of a very small handful of Sens fans in the GTA)
p.s. What a game last night (Buf/Ott). Way to go Emery taking on Peters!
roger1818 2007-02-23, 12:05 PM 99gecko, if you look back in this thread starting with Post #173 (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?p=467322#post467322) you will see that CBC sometimes (if not always) puts the local game on CBOT-TV and the national game in HD on CBOT-DT. I don't want to start up the debate on whether this is a good thing or not all over again though.
As for playoff hockey, under the proposed new contract CBC would be relinquishing a Canadian series to TSN and not the other way around. It is conceivable that the CBC would relinquish the series nationally to TSN under the condition that CBC can broadcast it locally, but I haven't seen the offer to know if that is what will happen or not. From what I can see, it looks like a bad deal overall for the CBC, but they were backed into a corner and didn't have much choice.
99gecko 2007-02-23, 12:35 PM okay thanks Roger. I did indeed miss something.

What do you think would be on TSN in the local market for sat/cable subs - Black-out or TSN-secondary feed?
wprager 2007-02-23, 12:52 PM ...TSN is likely to rent an HD truck for the game where as CBC would save their HD trucks for the Leafs games.
There, fixed it for you.
roger1818 2007-02-23, 01:01 PM What do you think would be on TSN in the local market for sat/cable subs - Black-out or TSN-secondary feed?
That would probably be the biggest obstacle for this to happen. In a perfect world, TSN would carry CBC's national game in the local market, but I don't know if they are set up to have different programs in different markets. If it is possible, it would be a win-win as CBC gets to show the local game in local markets and TSN is compensated for that with the National game, which obviously would have good viewer ship.
If that isn't possible they would have to either black out or simulcast the broadcast, depending on the wording of the contract. The more that I think about it, the more I think that CBC wouldn't get local rights to the game, but we can always hope.
moosebump 2007-02-23, 05:23 PM It comes down to where can they get the best use of the trucks (a combination of number of games and viewership of those games). So now I have another reason to hope the Leafs miss the playoffs ;)
Doug30 2007-02-23, 07:34 PM wprager..I'd give up a Leafs game in HD to see Chris Neil get his block knocked off.

Oh, please. McGrattan is the token goon on the Sens, and he hasn't dressed for 9 games. Chris Neil is leading the league in hits -- granted, it's not goals or assists, but he's not leading in PIMs either. Now, Domi in his heydey, on the other hand ...
Doug30 2007-02-23, 09:08 PM Neil is a goon. Mcgratton is just a big dope on skates.
WIggy 2007-02-24, 03:51 PM Do they blackout Senators games on CBC Ottawa for viewers in the west? Do they do the same for RDS? Thanks
JohnnyCanuck 2007-02-24, 03:54 PM The CBC does not black out any games. They carry one national game in each time slot and may carry additional regional games.
For example if the Senators are the national game and the Habs are playing in the same time slot, the entire country would see the Senators except Quebec which would see the Habs.
WIggy 2007-02-24, 04:30 PM Great so if I order CBC Ottawa in Edmonton with Shaw I can watch the Sens game instead of watching a boring non playoff team like the Leafs?

I'm confused. How does one receive HD from CBOT (Ottawa) ? Or is this an OTA signal ? The only HD CBC channel that I receive is CBLT-DT (Toronto).
