I recently got an HDTV and watch CBC with an OTA antenna. Every Sat. it seems the Leaf game looks significantly better than the west coast game. Anyone know why? The West coast game looks almost like and upcoverted sd signal.

Because the west game is widescreen SD. CBC only has one HD truck, but a second one is in the works.

Today on Hockey Day in Canada, the CBC schedule says that the first game is in Widescreen, the second in HD, and the third in widescreen. Now I know CBC only has one HD truck (so far?) but why am I just getting 4:3 SD (upconverted) on CBCHD for the first game? Shouldn't I be getting at least Widescreen SD (upconverted)?

Also, with the new forum layout I seem to have lost the "What's on in HD?" forum. Where would be the approriate place for posts that would have gone there?

Thanks.

CBC currently has 1 HD truck and 2 WS trucks. Looking at today's HD schedule the following events should be in HD/WS (all times in EST):

12:00 Hockey Day in Canada - WS
14:00 Montreal @Ottawa - WS
17:00 Hockey Day in Canada - WS
19:00 Vancouver @ Toronto - HD
22:00 Edmonton @ Calgary - WS

This would require 3 WS trucks so I guess they decided to have the two WS trucks in Neslon and Calgary and have a 4:3 truck in Ottawa (did anyone notice if HDIC was in WS to confirm my theory?).

CBC/Radio-Canada has 1 HD Truck (Premier) and 3 WS Truck (D86 from Edmonton, Mobile from Winnipeg and D80 from Montreal)

In post #106 (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=450289&postcount=106) in this thread Marc (from CBC) said only D80 and D86 do WS and that he didn't know of any upcoming conversions.

Just because a truck has cameras with switchable aspect ratios, doesn't mean it can do a WS broadcast. It also needs digital editing equipment which I gather the Mobile from Winnipeg does not have (unless they are borrowing it from Encore).

what about that time when CBC had two HD games in one night, one in Toronto and one in Vancouver. why can't this happen more often. this would have been a perfect time to do that.

...wasn't Vancouver playing in Toronto?

Whatever the press release was it was BS. The Sens/Habs game was 4:3.
Figures, at least the Leafs lost again in glorious HD. :)

"Whatever the press release was it was BS. The Sens/Habs game was 4:3"

Yeah exactly. The CBC schedule says the first and third games would be WS but they were 4:3. Of course the Van TO game was HD.

PS - 57: thanks for the info. Like any changes, takes a bit of getting used to.

The third game seemed like HD to me, but it may have just been a fantastic upconvert. Either way it was 16:9.

Oh, ok it seems the third game was in WS then. Yeah I missed the third game but when I saw the first game that was supposed to be WS was actually in 4:3 I figured the same would happen for the third game. I did watch Vancouver beat TO in some nice HD though!

Yes it definably was, and i'm 90% sure it was HD. It did not look as good as the Toronto/Vancouver game, but i am pretty sure it was better then SD 16:9. The quality difference could be attributed to the rented truck or the lighting at the saddledome, having been there myself a few years back i can tell you this arena has some 'style' but inside the layout is not great.

We aren't quite sure what happened that time. They may have rented a truck for some reason or they could have been demoing equipment for "Encore" (CBC's second HD truck). Things will get much better once “Encore” has been completed.

HD hockey on CBC s..ks!

Check out an NFL football game on CBS or a Raptor basketball game on TSN.
Check out the hockey on TSN & NBC.

CBC HD hockey PQ doesn't compare. Not to mention the BS WS SD and the crappo SD.

I'll take SD WS over no WS... That said, the second HD truck will be most welcome!

Anyone know if the last game was HD or not? It looked *mostly* hd to me with the exception of the center ice camera, or maybe i was just too drunk, thoughts?

The third game was in WS.

roger1818, I made a mistake, the third WS truck is Mobile from Moncton.

Do you mean this one (http://www.cbc.radio-canada.ca/mobile/images/pdf/moncton.pdf)? You must be joking.
