Is Shaw blocking access to speakeasy speed test? I have not been able to access since last Thursday.

I have finally been able to access Speakeasy - couldn't access for almost a week (not sure if it was a coincidence, but had no internet for almost 6 hours yesterday).

I am currently on Shaw Extreme for about a year. I am not sure what speeds I should be getting. Technically a bit confusing thus I am here to ask for analysis on my latest speeds and speeds I should be getting with Extreme.

Thanks

But, these speed tests are unreliable. The amount of data they download and upload is too small, and the duration too brief, to give accurate results of high speed connections. For accurate results, you need to transfer much larger amounts of data.

If your ISP gives you space on their server (e.g. free web space) then here's a good way to test: place a large file on their server. Then download that file to your PC and watch the average transfer speed readout near the end of the download. That gives you the average transfer speed of the entire download of a large file, so it's more accurate that the highly-variable tests using a small amount of data and a short duration download. Even better, the ISP's server should be within their own network, so you're more narrowly testing your true connection speed between you and your ISP.

Hey I live centretown Ottawa and was wondering who everybody is getting their internet service from. Also including the price they're paying..company they are with and speed and of course posting their speeds. This will help everybody in Ottawa make the best decision.

I'm currently with:
NCF DSL which is $29.99/mth 5mbps download. 200GB/mth cap for downloading. No activation or contract. You must buy your own modem though which is done through them. (I have speedtouch 516).

Provider: Shaw
Type: High Speed + Powerboost
Price: No Bundle - $43.90/ month ($40.95 HS + $2.95 Powerboost) ~$9 off if your bundle
Modem Type: Motorola Surfboard SB5101
Purchased download speed: "Up to 5 Mbps download speed"
Purchased upload speed: "Up to 512 Kbps upload speed"

Powerboost gives a "5 to 20 second burst of downloading speed". So interpret how you want. Without powerboost, I used to be just under the 5Mbps speed offered.

The so-called Bell "High speed" internet is great if the price is right.

Take a look:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/379501516.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

Location: Toronto, Ontario
Provider: Bell Sympatico
Type:
Total Internet - DSL
Price:
1.Deal with Indian call center few times in a while but if you keep trying (for oh well 10+ times), you might as well end up with a rep who isn't Indian, who would actually solve your problem instead of saying "I can assure you sir that (things-that's-never-true goes here)"
2.Few extra cups of coffee or hot chocolate each month to spend the time while waiting on the phone queue

--keep in mind that you will have to spend around $50 for your DSL service in addition to the prices you have to pay mentioned above..

I pay nothing - because it is a 3 month trial from a local Chinese reseller.

Monthly Bandwidth:
for both upload + download
Modem Type:
2Wire Gateway 2701HG-G

Throttles P2P and bad-for-bell traffic, incl. but not limited to: SIP, Skype, Livestation, BitTorrent,,,etc

I pay exactly the same each month as DigitalEight and Lozenge (same service; Shaw High Speed). This is what I get:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/393018803.png

Pretty poor for 2 PM on a Sunday, I think. I am feeling that I have been ripped off.

Interestingly, the Shaw speed test shows a download speed of 588 Kbps which is consistent with the above.
