majortom 2012-03-13, 12:23 AM for kicks close smartdvb program, try deleting the file 'smartdvb.db'.
that will delete the database along with any settings. Start smartdvb again, and it will create a new smartdvb.db . see if it does the same thing with fresh .db
I have used 3 different USB tuners with it for ATSC here without issue since the ATSC issue was fixed.
-Hauppauge Aero M (WIN7)
-Evga inDtube (XP & WIN7)
-ATI Wonder 650 USB (Win XP Only, no WIN 7 Driver is avail for this tuner)
plus
-Prof 7500 USB (DVB-S2 for satellite)
I can switch between ATSC & the Prof for satellite on the fly based on the channel I'm viewing.
Ah, thats what I suspect, it doesnt agree with the 950Q or at least 950Q v7 drivers....which you dont use
OK, I removed the program SmartDVB for now, and using WINTV7 only, looks like SmartDVB isnt going to work on this computer with this tuner stick. :(
thanks for trying anyway
Majortom,
Heres my latest test to confirm driver incompatibility, i think...
I installed the latest SmartDVB files:
I can ONLY get SmartDVB to run with 950Q WINTV V6 drivers installed, NOT V7 drivers,
Test was I installed latest WINTV V7 (drivers & software) from hauppauge website. WINTV works, but SmartDVB doesnt work.
Then I installed WINTV V6 (DRIVERS ONLY) from hauppauge CD, WINTV still works, AND SmartDVB WORKS, BUT signal LEVEL still does not work. (I did NOT uninstall V7 before installing V6 drivers).
1. So....im not sure why 950Q WINTV V7 is incompatible (I assume) with SmartDVB (not sure if it matters).....?
2. Not sure why signal LEVEL still does not work with 950Q tuner, but again, I assume it might be the incompatibility?
Might be interesting to compare your logs against my logs ?
(I think I may need to change tuners ())

Im not trying to be negative, but heres my understanding of what we DO know....please correct me..
Basically of the ones you mention, none are STANDARD ATSC with RF coaxial input tuner sticks known to work with SmartDVB (full features) on WIN7 !, so we cant compare your application to mine, at all
And now we know 950Q tuner is not compatible with SmartDVB on WIN7.
DTube doesnt say WIN7 is supported, same for ATI 650, and Aero doesnt have RF coaxial input !
Bottom line is I would like to find a USB ATSC coaxial tuner that works with SmartDVB (with full features) and on WIN7...I suspect this wont be an easy task
I would like to thank Jack and yourself, again for your help and timely responses ;)
BTW, Hauppauge Support is a real nightmare, horrible service, both in NY & UK, they could not solve any of the issues I had with the tuner, and didnt persist in resolving....in the end I had to resove the issues myself! I would stay well away from them (if they work great, but if not, good luck to you!). I suspect all the manus are similar - glad I only paid $20 for this stick
Audio with AC3 filter AND latest SmartDVBfiles he sent me is now working !

All 3 of the USB tuners I have, come with external rf inputs. Otherwise I wouldn't even have them.
I was under the impression you were able to get your 950Q working.
On a side note, though Hauppauge makes no mention of it on their product pages,
using TSReader, I just confirmed the Hauppauge Aero M can do Clear QAM (tested in XP only).
Of the devices i have, driver support can be summarised like this:
Device Linux XP WIN7 QAM enabled Comp ANA In
inDtube Y Y Y N Y
Aero M Y Y Y Y N
ATI650 USB N Y N Y Y
Majortom,
Thanks for the clarifications.
Yes, my 950Q and WINTV v7 now functions correctly (since I did Windows repair Install),
HOWEVER,
Jacks SmartDVB (latest) sent to me as a package does not always work with the 950Q (v7 drivers), it worked one time then not anymore, and cant get signal level bar.
majortom 2012-03-18, 09:24 AM not certain i'd get too hung up on the signal bar at this point. first priority should be stabilising it. The Hauppauge Aero M indicates zero "Signal Level" as well in Smartdvb. Its the quality indicator that matters.
From my testing, with TSReader's ATSC.dlls (we can play with TSReader's ATSC Source DLLs since we have the source code). The information reported by the frontend hardware in two of three tuners here is useless in terms of "Signal Level" anyhow.
I'm sure he'll get around to fixing up the aesthetics sooner or later.
Still working with him to try and get Clear QAM working in SmartDVB.
agreed,
at least I know it can work with latest drivers, just not sure yet why its so unstable....guess more log files will help...
thanks
CamDAB 2012-03-18, 04:10 PM For what this is worth, I had a hard drive slowly go belly up.... In the process, it corrupted the WinTV7 channel database.
Result: Win7 would start, then quickly exit on it's own, no error reporting.
If I then load the channel recording program viewer / editor, it would show as normal minus the grid lines. Nothing else could be done with it.
I was able to do a complete drive image before the whole shebang went west.
A re-image onto a new drive worked flawlessly, including bringing back the corrupted WinTV7 install. :-)
Re-did the install from the web download of WinTV7... When it found the previous channel database, I told it to NOT use it, but create a new channel database, and all worked perfectly.
This may not be your problem, but corruption of various elements of the WinTV7 install do seem to upset it quite easily.
One oddity, the "Open Scheduler (only)" icon *ALWAYS" leaves it on screen, but not having focus. The "Open Recordings (only)" icon works correctly. Strange....
BTW, this is all on Win7, x64 platform using WinTV7 with a 950Q

erorr 2012-04-06, 11:16 PM Does viewing ota television on a laptop using a usb tuner use internet bandwidth ?
j0dest3r 2012-04-07, 12:06 AM Nope not at all, only a bit for the guide data every once in a while, but that's it.
roger1818 2012-04-07, 08:38 AM ^^^It can sometimes get guide data from the OTA broadcast so that isn't even necessary, unless your software insists on it.
