Ok thanks Majortom,
Been working 2 days to get it running with the author, he is very patient and responsive !
We put new bda & exe files, the channels scan as physical channel #.
The problem now is there is ONLY signal quality bar, no signal LEVEL, I assume it doesnt support it for ATSC. So I dont really get what more info this gives for signal data, than say WiNTV, which gives some version of BER, & SNR....and signal bar
All the smartDVB signal data (SNR, Power, & BER etc) is for blindscan only, which as you mentioned is for satellite only !
Of course I realize I might be missing something here ?
so far I left ALL settings as they appeared, default
majortom 2012-03-08, 07:25 PM Part of the problem with any atsc BDA capable device in terms of reporting is that even though there are standard commands in Microsoft's BDA to pull the info. There is no standard required as to what the frontend actually reports. Each vendor seems to implement whatever they want.
One of mine for instance reports the exact same information when ya query "Signal Strength" and "Signal Quality". Doesn't matter windows driver or linux driver, ask for "strength" and "quality" ya get a number back for each that reflects the SNR in tenths of a dB. Meanwhile yours will report something different, and the next device different from that. So for the person writing s/w their hands are pretty much tied.
WinTV that came with the Hauppauge Aero M doesn't display signal or quality here, nothing. Pretty useless for aiming. I tried WINTV once to test the device when it showed up and set it aside as useless for me.
Good luck trying to get any OEM vendor or even a Microsoft to change their software because you didn't like what they did. What they say goes and that's the end of it.
Oddly, the first time we got the scanner working for ATSC preset channels, it scanned a single channel (a weak NBC signal here) and displayed BOTH signal quality and signal strength....
I noted it, especially because, signal quality was around 80-90%, and locked, while the signal strength indicator was bouncing around 10-20%...
After that loading, we never got it to display signal strength again, but resolved most of the other issues.
The author said he thought some ATSC tuners would allow the signal strength to be displayed.
in the end, I think WINTV has enough info for my purpose and my laptop is MUCH happier with it.
BTW,
There is a possibility Jacola will be working on incorporating more ATSC signal data measurements in the future....so I stated there is a lot of interest & tried to encourage it. i also mentioned this site,
FWIW
majortom 2012-03-09, 08:27 PM Yeah, he sent me an email to the same affect. I just confirmed you guys got it working again. Working well again on my old tuner and the new Hauppauge Aero M. (I haven't tested QAM yet). Nice job Jac.
I'd challenge anyone to find a Microsoft or any OEM S/W developer fix a bug for you in the space of 2 days:)
Email Snippet:
I worked out the issues i hope with atsc with that other user there (was already busy with him on that) so i'm sending you the latest updates of smartdvb.exe and bda.dev which should work
for atsc, as said cable-clear is also there just untested... I tried registering on the forum, but the picture that i should see doesn't come up for me (some error) so cannot register there otherwise i would have posted
there already as there are things to be said, for example the crazycat blindscan module does support atsc, so for sure it would be possible to implement better atsc support quite easily perpaps with that,
also including much more atsc stream information as that user mentions, but that would be for the future of course, and well when the time comes maybe we can look at this, quite interesting of course perhaps as long as crazycat stays on this ..
If you want to help test SmartDVB wth ATSC and QAM, download this test version install here...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/51980102/SmartDVB025Releasetest3.rar
That won't work by itself, so you'll need to download these two and overwrite the existing bda.dev in the 'devices' directory, and smartdvb.exe in the Smartdvb root dir. These two will fix the ATSC issue.

In fairness to Jacola (smartDVB), I must update you all as to my test using his SmartDVB program on ATSC.
Now that we have it all up & running, I think correctly (I still need to play with the audio), it seems to be working well. No more program freezing and no more laptop slowing down.
I want to thank Jacola, again ! I do appreciate it.
I still have issues with Hauppauge 950Q WINTV v7 drivers on the 64 BIT, not resolved. So for now Im running smartDVB with v6 drivers installed !
Thanks
majortom 2012-03-10, 01:32 PM I have always used "AC3Filter" for my Audio decoder with any DVB application and have never had an audio problem.
May have to select the right audio renderer for your PC's chipset, so on. For example one of my PCs has a seperate setting to render
the built in PC Speaker audio or for sending it to HDMI. Sometimes I'll forget to switch when playing HDMI to my TV.
He sent a new bda.dev which fixed the the "Zero Level" indicator.
majortom,
Even though I enjoy antenna hobbies (since 2 yrs), I am not studied in this area...;) so all of this software application is a long learning curve, ...
I did a "Repair Install" of Windows 7 in an attempt to clean up any possible OS issues. And, joy, got 950Q, WINTV v7 working properly!
But....now I cant get SmartDVB working anymore, however I dont think I have his latest package (which he is so kindly working on!). I noticed the WINTV v6 drivers seem to work better with SmartDVB (not figured out why..yet...)
As for the audio, I downloaded the first AC3 filter package, but had no clue yet what settings to use in AC3 filter. I selected AC3 in SmartDVB audio decoder but still nothing! I also tried changing the audio renderer, but nothing...I select Realtek HD audio speakers (since that is what my HP device is, I also have ATI HD Audio Device...)...Anyway guess its time for more experimenting to find if im doing it wrong, but I should wait until I get the guts of SmartDVB working first
Thanks to you and Jack for your guidance.
majortom 2012-03-12, 08:28 PM u do see where the volume control is in SmartDVB right? This is in addition to the PC volume control. If either one is set very low, it may seem like no audio. The slider is to the right of the quality indicator at the bottom. And to the right of the slider is a mute button. Also make sure your seeing the audio level meters in AC3 Filter settings are moving. Assuming they are, then your filter is configured and decoding the audio from the MPEG stream OK. Just a matter of rendering from there (i.e. routing it to ur speakers, HDMI, adjusting volume, whatever). Last ditch try plugging headphones in and see if there is any audio there. I have not been testing HDMI outputs as of yet, though I know I have had SmartDVB connected to HDMI of my TV when watching Satellite. Shouldn't be any difference. AC3 is AC3 whether OTA or Satellite.
Thanks Majortom,
yes, I will check that out once we get the program running again....
The last bda download you linked to gives me a Warning box, error opening...same problem with a file Jacinto sent me. Previous files opened properly.
majortom 2012-03-12, 08:55 PM I gotcha, try this:
-Uninstall SmartDVB to get back to square one.
-Install this one first, It's the complete Release Candidate I rcv'd in an email from last week or so. Should eliminate the missing teveii.dll or whatever error your seeing. (atsc of course won't work yet)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/51980102/smartdvb025prerctest1.rar
-Then install the package from Post 265 over that.
-Then use the updated bda.dev and SmartDVB.exe to fix the atsc tuning issue.
thats the problem, I cant download the bda or smartdvb file in post #265 - 2 different errors
majortom 2012-03-12, 09:21 PM strange. they all work for me, firefox 10 in linux.
and ie9 in win7. wonder if ya need to be a dropbox user? can't imagine that but...
yes, but what are you extracting them with...
majortom 2012-03-12, 09:30 PM ahh, do you have winrar installed??
You need that to deal with rar compressed files.
using bitzipper which works on rars, and worked on all of them the other days, now its just the bda thats not extracting...
EDIT: using Winrar i get error - archive is unknown format or damaged
majortom 2012-03-12, 10:11 PM the bda isn't compressed, only the installer is compressed. bda is bda.dev, just rt click, save as, save it in a temp dir or sumthing. Then copy it over to the devices directory. Ya might get a bark about needing admin privledge to overwrite sumthing in Program Files\...
darn, thats right...bda & smartdvb...files
ok so now all are in place, but same old error, error starting device 950Q bda tuner (even after selecting it), atsc list is there...but program just hangs & have to close it....
so I guess the problem is the 950Q v7 drivers....which are the latest...I think the program might work with v6 drivers but I wanted to use latest drivers...:(:(
anyway I will send log to Jacinto..

majortom 2012-03-12, 11:12 PM just to be sure, when you select a device in device settings, you're clickin Florian BDA right? It will say bda.dev to the right. Is the 950 Q the only BDA tuner you have connected?
yes, correct,
when I start program I get the device error, then I do OK on the error, then I go to devices, select Florian, then 950Q Cable appears AND 950Q ATSC appears in Devices, then I select 950Q ATSC, then I get the device error again (I do OK again), then I go to scan freq list and it bogs...(if I go back to devices, then my selections have to be redone again...etc...)
I have a single 950Q stick in the USB.
At one point htis worked, i think with older drivers, but I dont like that
EDIT: Another oddity (maybe), when I eject USB safely, it gives me message Problem, Windows cant stop device because program is still using it....yet I dont see any programs using it...so I suspect it has to do with Windows Services & HauppaugeTVServer...???
