I bailed from Rogers, gave my box away. My friend says it doesn't work at his house.

Your friend needs to have it activated at his house (and pay for services, etc) as the STB was probably deactivated when you "bailed".

Ye you friend needs to speak with CSR @ Rogers and they can have the box added up to his acc. right away. If you let's say have existing account and you just the box away to you friend for a month you both actually have to call in and auth that move. If you just take it to your buddies place and works fine you'r good, but if you get not auth you still have to call CSR @ Rogers and again have it transferred to your buddy's account for the time being that sometimes will cause trouble as if you go back to your house it might give u not auth and again both of you have to call in. And not all parts of Toronto are under the 230 number.

it doesnt matter what room you move the box to, bedroom to living room then put an sd in your bed room is the same as keeping it in your bedroom, and putting the sd in your living room. rogers does not care wich outlets or Room its connected to.

as for the poster above who "bailed rogers" and gave his STB to a friend, well my godfather was given a box from his "DAD" and wanted to use it in "HIS" house. His DAD had to phone rogers, remove the SAB from the account and the additional outlet fee, then HE had to call rogers once he got to his house, and give them the SAB and activate it on "His" cable package.

I have a PVR in the living room and two HD terminals in my bedroom and office. All work fine and it doesn't matter which room they're in. I have the VIP package, so I get 4 outlets included.

It still depends on the package - for example, Digital VIP allows for 4 TV connections. However, that's the topic of another thread, not this one. This one's about moving STBs between houses, not rooms. Let's please stay on topic.

so, in laws were renting a pvr at my suggestion -not using it !!, anyway when the big sale went on after Christmas I suggested they buy a 4250 and return rental PVR saving 25.00 month -
long story short they were all sold out - so I said I would give them one of my 4250 boxes until i could get a new one at the sale rate - took it from Mississauga to brampton and all channells appeared fine- when we called home from their place the call pop up popped on their TV - HUMMM !! (they do not have rogers phones)
seems the phone pop up channel 975 is hooked to the box not the address/phone line , I found out you could disable the popup on 975- but this seems of interest - and Big brotherism
I guess!

You may want to call Rogers and let them know you've moved the boxes around.

If I only have rogers home phone and my friend bring over his PVR do you think we can watch Cable TV?

That would be considered cable theft and is not discussed here. If you wish to watch programming that's already recorded on the PVR, then I believe the PVR will now boot without being connected to cable, so you should be able to watch that. That can be checked at his house by removing the RF-coax cable from the PVR and unplugging/replugging the PVR.

Question: A friend of mine has Rogers internet only (doesn't watch much TV, so just does OTA).

If I want to take my cable box there tonight to watch the Leafs game, can I just plug the coax cable from his cable modem into my cable box and it will work? Or do they somehow filter out the cable channels from internet-only subscribers?

It may or may not work. I believe the filters are for analogue channels and do not affect the digital STB.

Edit - it seems Rogers now have filters that do block digital cable.

Umm... so what are some reasons it may NOT work?

It may not work if it's too far from its original location - for example a different head end that doesn't recognize the STB. There has been conflicting information on how far a STB can be taken before it doesn't work. That's why we've said that the only way to test it is to actually give it a try, remembering that this should only be done occasionally, otherwise both parties could be in trouble with Rogers.

Well to answer my own question.. looks like there IS a filter they can use to allow internet traffic through but block digital cable.

When we took the cable from his cable modem and plugged it into my digital box it surprisingly did not work. I thought this was odd because the cable box worked at his next door neighbour's house just fine.

So we opened the box at the side of his house and took off a little filter that was on the line, and then the cable box started working.

What you did with the filter was illegal and placing the STB on that line is also illegal since it's now theft of signal, unless you removed the STB right away (and replaced the filter) and this was only a test. It seems that Rogers now has filters that can block digital cable - this came up in an other recent thread. I'm guessing they found too many people doing what you're doing... ;)

Hello, I'm new to this forum. This is a very useful forum since there're a wealth of information in the posts.

My Parents have a HD box (free for a year with a package) and I only have a SD box. Since I just bought a new HD TV, I have switched the box hae been using theirs for the last month. They only live about a mile from me, so I guess we must be on the same 'server'. I am just wondering why anyone will get into trouble moving their cable box from house to house. We're still paying for the services and since you can't use the box at both places at the same time, I'm don't think we are stealing any signal.

The only downside is that I had the movie channel and my dad didn't. Now I get HD but no movie channel.
