But there are people who have no problems with the 6100 or the 9200 either.

New Dish receiver? LOL

You mean the year old ViP211 or ViP622? Or maybe the discontinued ViP411? Or are you talking about the new (been out in field testing for 16 months) ViP222 (Dual tuner 1 x HD & 1 x SD non PVR) and the other two "new" receivers that Dish will unveil at "Team Summit" in May?

It is soooooooooo confusing these days!

Dish even has ANOTHER new switch being announced at Dish Summit in May!!!!!
lol
It was new to me because i've never seen one actually working before. :)
it was recieving Dish local HD channels, and i believe they're mpeg4 only.

Bell will need an Mpeg 2&4 rx, but since they don't yet have space to duplicate signals, i don't know why everybodys worried about a receiver swap.

The new 622 & other newer HD recievers are backwards compatible with Mpeg2...where do you get mpeg4 only?

I said Dish's local HD channels are Mpeg4 only. So you can't get them on an old rx.

Directly from a National Install Bulletin for March 16/2007

In July 2007, ExpressVu will be introducing brand new ‘MPEG4’ receivers which will replace the models 6100 and 9200. As there are a limited number of OM system updates available this year, we have been forced to add the MPEG4 receivers in OM three months ahead of schedule in order for them to be available in the system in time for the Q3 launch.

Ok...so what does that mean to the consumer?

The ViP servies receiver can receive both MPEG2 and MPEG4.

Dish sends out the "old" HD channels in MPEG2 (pre 2006 including SOME locals) and the new HD channels in MPEG4. Dish will no longer activate any 'legacy' HD receivers on the HD packages. If you had the "old" HD packages on the old receivers you can keep them. If you want to activate an older generation HD (MPEG2 only) receiver and see only the MPEG2 channels in SD you can do it.

That is why the thoughts see to be leaning towards a receiver swap, the same as Dish did last year.

This is where I see a predicament.
I initially bought a 4700, cost = +- 300 bucks plus tax.
Then a few years later I upgraded to 6100, cost = 400 bucks plus tax.

From what I read here I dont believe EV will be able to run parallel mpeg 2 & 4 streams for new channels (as a mainstream solution to the problem, whenever they switch to mpeg 4).

So, does EV truly intend to lock me out of future channels that are mpeg 4 only or actually expect me to upgrade yet again? If so, what protects me from some similar deal in the future.
The predicament for EV is that if they lock me out of channels due to mpeg 4, and some really good mpeg 4 channels come out.....I bail. I will either seek a deal from another carrier or, failing a deal, sell everything on Ebay and just go to the competitor. Personally I'm at the point where I don't want any more receivers or dish's on my house, I've spent more than enough on EV (for a receiver that freezes).
If they intend to freeze out existing mpeg 2 customers, right when HD is really starting to go mainstream, they risk losing my regular business all for the sake of a receiver which costs peanuts relative to my yearly subscription.

But who knows, maybe they wager that only a small percentage of subscribers actually leave and the pluses and minuses still add up in their favour.

It's an interesting pickle they are in.

Will they issue the new receivers as rentals only? Maybe that's how they'll try to entice people to upgrade, and slowly phase out the mpeg2 signals.

Well if they do go strictly rental on the new recievers, they can kiss this customer goodby. I own all the stuff in my house and will not for a second contemplate a rental route. This is not to say that I expect the new recievers for free, but I do not expect to get next to nothing on a exchange program either.

So Hugh, why do u think a swap will not happen? It would be good to have your expertise on this subject!!!

I'm with Alt, I personally will never go the rental route and if that scenario was put to me I'd be insulted, I'm not relegating over 700 bucks in receivers and dishes to a junk pile in the basement.

For me, if I'm forced to cough up several hundred more dollars just to stay in the HD game via mpeg 4, I personally will give that money to a brand new carrier and sell all my EV stuff.

Dish did NOT do a reciever swap.
A friend of mine confirms this, he's a long time Dish subscriber in the US. He's still got our equivalent of the 9200 as well as the ViP 622.

On the other hand, Dish seems to have a ton of satellites up there so perhaps they didn't think they needed to.

DISH Network announced as of 1 February 2006, that all new HDTV channels would be available in MPEG-4 format only, while maintaining the current lineup as MPEG-2. Both a standard receiver and a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) are available to subscribers for an upgrade fee. DISH Network intends to eventually convert the entire platform to MPEG-4 in order to provide more channels to subscribers.

vister555 upgraded his receiver's, he had to pay a small fee I believe. I'm sure he can clarify this.

If Expressvu expects me to buy new hardware to get all the HD channels, it won't be Expressvu hardware that I'm buying.

i would be willing to pay up to $200 for a swap if it included a bigger drive and other options.

Dish did NOT do a reciever swap.
Dish offered existing customers a tradein (aka swap) for their old MPEG2 HD receivers. I dumped my old 811 as fast as I could!

I assume you are a Dish customer? I certainly am a Dish sub and have been for five years.
