: Using 8300-HD remote to control receiver volume.
montreal 2006-09-04, 10:07 AM Hello,
I have a one year old 8300HD which includes the AT8400 remote control. Up until yesterday, the 8300HD was connected to a stereo power amplifier (no preamp). This stereo power amplifier has no volume control. Since I do not use the loudspeakers built into my HDTV, my cable provider gave me a code that allowed the volume control button on the AT8400 remote to adjust the variable audio output of the 8300HD rather than the variable volume of the HDTV, which was what this button controlled previously. The AT8400 remote still knows that my TV is a Sony in order to allow me to power it on and off with this same remote.
Yesterday I brought home a Sony AV receiver and all adjustments to the audio volume are now made on this receiver which uses the Sony RM-AAU005 remote.
Now I need to use two remote controls to watch cable TV programs, the AT8400 remote to change the channels on the 8300HD and the RM-AAU005 remote to correct the audio volume on the AV receiver.
I would like to be able to get the volume control button on the AT8400 remote to adjust the volume on the receiver instead of the volume on the 8300HD, but the 8300HD user manual has no codes for AV receivers.
I already have one learning type universal remote and I could update it, but most of the time, I use the AT8400 remote because my universal remote won't mimic easily the video recorder/playback controls of the AT8400 remote.
Have any of you owners of 8300HD cable boxes been able to program your AT8400 remotes to control the audio volume on your AV receivers?
Thanks
The AT8400 Operating manual should have codes for receivers. Look under "AUX".
You can download the manual from the following site (TW)
http://www.timewarnercable.com/MediaLibrary/1/1/FAQ/documents/AllTouch%20AT8400%20Universal%20Remote%20Control%20Users%20G uide.pdf
Many people have it working just the way you discuss, however, some people have had difficulty with some receivers. For example, I was doing a setup last week and could not get the "Marantz" codes to work for the receiver in question.

Thanks 57 for your link.
It took all afternoon to find a solution, but there is one.
First, these STR-DG500, STR-DG600, and STR-DG800 receivers all leave the factory with the AV mode set to AV2, which is more exclusive than the more universal AV1 mode. To change mode AV2 to AV1 so that older SA remotes can work, the receiver must be turned on while holding down the "INPUT MODE" button on front panel. You should see the text CMODEAV1 displayed.
Leave the receiver on and let the AT8400 remote scan (function 991) through its AUX library looking for the first code (of a set of 21, of which 6 belong to Sony receivers) that will turn off the reciever. My turned off with code 3008 (first code of the potential six Sony codes).
Now I can control the channels on the cable box and the volume on the receiver all with the same remote.
Originally, the volume button on my AT8400 remote transmitted to my HDTV and the cable box outputted a fixed volume. Then I asked the cable company for advice and they told me how to change the remote so that the volume button transmitted to the cable box instead. I don't remember the procedure.
What I would like to do now is discover a way to get the volume button on the remote to transmit to the reciver when device CBL is selected as it now does when device AUX is selected.
The following link may help other Sony receiver owners with a similar problem due to the C-MODE (Command Mode) being factory set at AV2.

The next step as you want is also outlined in the remote operating manul.
It's not outlined in the TW manual I linked for you earlier, however it is outlined in the paper manual for the Remote that comes with the SA8300HD. It's a small manual about 3" x 8" or so.

If the info is in my 8300HD user's manual, then it is not obvious.
So I found all I needed to know here:
http://cfl.mybrighthouse.com/customer_care/remote/default.aspx
To lock the volume control to the AV receiver (device AUX) so that regardless of what mode the remote is in (CBL,TV,VCR), the volume button will always talk to the receiver:
1) Press and hold SELECT and CBL until all mode keys blink twice.
2) Enter the code 993 slowly. The CBL key blinks twice.
3) Press the mode key for the device the volume keys should control. For example, if you want to control volume through your receiver, press AUX. All mode keys blink three times.
The volume keys control only one device (the receiver) whether you are in CBL, TV, or VCR mode.
Everything works properly now. Thanks for your encouragement.
It's not in the 8300 manual. It's in the operating manual for the remote, which is typically white and about 3" x 8". The remote operating manual is usually packaged with the remote and most people don't even notice it. I'm glad you found the appropriate codes.

I don't remember ever getting this manual. I'll check in the original shipping carton.
Thanks for your help.
montreal 2006-09-06, 03:34 PM P.S. To update the Sony receiver's configuration from time to time via the menus, you will need to use the Sony remote that came with the receiver, and to allow this Sony remote to work again with the receiver, the Command mode on the receiver will have to be toggled to AV2 (original factory setting). Once the configuration is done, the receiver can be toggled back to AV1 so that the Scientific Atlanta remote can work again.
That's too bad. I wonder whether there is a code on the AT8400 Remote that will work in the AV2 position. I use mine mostly for volume.

When the Command mode of the Sony receiver was still in its factory default position of AV2, there was no code in the AT8400 remote's library that would turn the receiver ON or OFF, so I assume there is no code in the same library that will do other receiver functions as well.
Which means that the AT8400 will only work if the receiver is in AV1.
But putting the receiver in AV1 command mode means that nothing on the Sony remote works, so if you need to use special buttons on the Sony remote to update the receiver's configuration menu, then you have no choice but to put the receiver temporarily back to AV2.
I wonder if it is possible to force the Sony remote to convert to AV1 format. That would eliminate the need to occasionally toggle the receiver's command mode.
When I was searching for codes for my Yamaha receiver, instead of using the on/off button during the search, I used the volume button since that's what I was interested in.
Some Receivers have discrete codes for on and off, therefore the AT8400 sometimes doesn't "do" on or off, but does volume.
You may wish to try the Sony codes for volume, before doing the search mode... Good luck.
Of course, you can always get a Harmony remote to do "everything".

I tried all six Sony receiver codes on my AT8400 (ver D) remote(3008,3009,3014,3017,3018,3020) and not a single one will cause the volume to change if I press the volume button on the SA remote while the receiver is in command mode AV2..
My guess is that code library 3055 or 3056 is required to allow a Scientific Atlanta remote to talk to a Sony receiver which is operating with command mode AV2. Codes 3055 and 3056 are available with the AT8400 version B, but not codes codes 3009 and 3018. It's hard to explain why some codes get added and others get dropped when versions and models of remotes change, and which codes talk to which Sony receivers.
otown47 2007-04-08, 01:56 PM Hey 57, a while ago you were talking about entering codes in your 8300hd remote for your Yamaha receiver. You mentioned that you couldn't find a code to power on the Yamaha. I found a code (3011) that turns off the power and allows control of the volume but thats all. Did you have any further luck with the code?
I had no problem getting my RX-V1 (HT AVR) to turn on, OR off, but because it has discrete codes for on/off, you can only do one or the other.
On my Yamaha stereo receiver on the main floor, the code for on/off is the same, so there I have no issues.
By punching in various other buttons on the SA remotes, I was also able to find codes for changing the inputs, changing stations in the Tuner memory, etc for both Receivers.
otown47 2007-04-09, 07:21 AM Thanks 57, so talking about your RX-V1 then, it has descrete on/off codes so you can only program one or the other on your SA remote...fine. Are you also saying that you use use your PVR remote to select inputs on on your RX-V1? Could you give me an example of which button you used on the remote to select the STB or DVD on the RX-V1?
thx...
otown47 2007-04-09, 09:38 AM 57, I did find that the SA key pad numbers do map to some of the Receiver inputs, unfortunately, the STB input isn't one of them. I guess I could change or move the STB input on the receiver to an input that is mapped by the SA remote, but then would have to remember that on the receiver remote to press say the CD input to get the STB.....might be confusing.
On the RX-V1, only the following inputs worked. I haven't tried different codes because I don't use this function.
1-CD, 2-Tape, 3-Tuner, 4-LD, 5-VCR1, 6-VCR2, 7-VAux, 9-Phono.
It does everything I need on the stereo receiver.
otown47 2007-04-09, 10:54 AM Mine's similar but less:
1-CD, 2-MD/Tape, 3-Tuner, 4-, 5-VCR1, 6-VCR2, 7-VAux, 8-, 9-Phono 0-
No CBL....:(
