james99 2006-09-03, 08:09 PM I believe Cogeco has the same deal but with a 6 month commitement.
sjtigers 2006-09-03, 08:15 PM so my question is why not Shaw?
ShawEmployee 2006-09-03, 11:24 PM You don't understand how much money it would cost to offer all those packages....Shaw would never make their money back nevermind make a profit if they were to offer those.
JesseJ 2006-09-04, 12:18 AM Is the customer base just too small to offer them?
bigoranget 2006-09-04, 12:31 AM You don't understand how much money it would cost to offer all those packages....Shaw would never make their money back nevermind make a profit if they were to offer those.
I find it hard to believe. Just about every cable system offers this except for Shaw and StarChoice.
I have a cable system that services only about 18,000 customers and we have a super sports pack at $24.95/month. We get MLB, NHL and NFL. We however do not get Nascar, NCAA and OHL games yet though.
T0pSh3lf 2006-09-04, 12:38 AM I would buy it, but I know overall it wouldnt make much sence.
Deathlok2001 2006-09-04, 12:48 AM Did not Shaw just have an early bird on NFL Sunday ticket? Sign on before Sept 1st & its only $34 a month

How can you say (type) that with a straight face? Are you kidding me?
Bell ExpressVu, Rogers, Access, Cogeco, Videotron.............they all carry NHL Centre Ice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you going to tell me that you can get NHL Centre Ice in almost all small towns in Central Ontario - but not in Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver?
This excuse that it costs too much doesn't fly anymore - get with it and give your customers what they want. People on this board are very well informed - don't try to insult them with this type of "excuse".
bb147 2006-09-04, 01:40 AM wow.. $26.95 and it includes nhl center ice!!!!
james99 2006-09-04, 02:20 AM Shaw is bigger than Cogeco. Cogeco is only the 4th largest in Canada.

Here, Here Brother I agree with you 100%. The real problem is SHAW's system is such a mess they haven't got the bandwidth to even give us HD that isn't covered with Macroblocking. And they are the most backward company when it comes to delivering new services and have virtually zero focus on what the customer wants. I am so sick of having this sub par service shoved in our face just because we are in Western Canada. We have every right to expect the same of service in Calgary as they get in Toronto. I personally think it is time for the CRTC to step in and put operational conditions on the continuation of Shaw's license to operate.
bobancle 2006-09-04, 03:07 AM I filled out that form to request new services from Shaw but I'd willing to bet I'd have more luck farting into the wind. They have showed no sign they care what customers want.
bobancle 2006-09-04, 03:14 AM You don't understand how much money it would cost to offer all those packages....Shaw would never make their money back nevermind make a profit if they were to offer those.
Well maybe Shaw should spend a little less money making those horrible commericals that appear 3000 times an hour on every channel. And maybe if they spend a little less time trying to reinvent a 100 year old technology with their crappy phone service. If Cogeco can do it than Shaw can. The truth is SHAW as a company won't do squat unless the profit is through the roof. SHAW needs to be shutdown by the CRTC pulling their license to operate unless they start providing a least as good a service in Western Canada as someone in Ontario or Quebec can get from Roger's or Cogeco.
I pity those poor people that have had their local cable companies bought up by Shaw in the past few weeks.
T0pSh3lf 2006-09-04, 10:17 AM If they put that type of offer out there, THERE IS NO WAY, Shaw makes a cent off of it
Think about it. If they make 40 bucks a month from NFL Sunday Ticket, right off the bat, they then lose 10 bucks for EVERY subscriber that has NFL sunday ticket.
Then, they have to "pay" for NCAA, MLB, NHL and all those rights, which would be another X amount of money.
So, @ 29.95, where does the income come from??? Your down 10 a month, then your down millions for the rights to publish those channels, and now you make money?
I agree, they could of made money if they put this offer out, 6 or so months ago, but with the Sunday ticket running, ts messes with you. Even still, I dont think enough people would buy it.
ShawEmployee 2006-09-04, 01:05 PM Hey, you guys wanted to know why its not offered and I'm telling you the reason. I personally would love NHL centre ice, but with the amount of money the NHL wants and the amount of digital channels that would need to be free'd up and the amount of people who would actually buy it, there's just no reason for Shaw to offer it right now. The best they could hope for is to probably break even.
I don't know the exact sales numbers of NFL sunday ticket but I know that Shaw isn't making a killing off it thats forsure.
This excuse that it costs too much doesn't fly anymore - get with it and give your customers what they want. People on this board are very well informed - don't try to insult them with this type of "excuse".
I am just the messenger. I haven't told you what my position is at shaw but I can definetely say it's not nearly high enough to authorize the signing of sports packages lol. If you want I just won't post here anymore and everyone can go back to complaining without getting any answers.
PokerChip 2006-09-04, 01:07 PM There have been lots of threads in the past 2 years about NFL Sunday Ticket and NHL Center Ice and when or why Shaw will or won't or wouldn't offer them.
Just about every time, we hear the argument that it would be too expensive for Shaw to make those services available. However, we hear that companies much smaller than Shaw do offer them (and I'm sure they're not doing it at a loss or out of the kindness of their heart, 'cause there ain't no free lunch when we talk about cablecos).
It would be interesting to have someone (perhaps ShawEmployee in this instance) make a logical, sound argument as to WHY it isn't economically viable for one of the biggest companies in Canada to offer those services. Just saying it's too expensive is not satisfactory and leads to a lot of people believing they're simply unwilling to do so.
I don't mean crack the books open, either, but there must be some information that could be understood by those of us browsing this board that would once and for all solve the mystery.
Redito 2006-09-04, 01:18 PM Just playing devils advocate here - I'm one of those people who wouldn't be buying Center Ice or Sunday Ticket. As such, I definitely would NOT want to have to pay extra on my regular cable bill somewhere down the line to subsidize these channels.
If Shaw can't make money on them (which still hasn't actually been established) then I'd hate for Shaw to offer them at a loss and try to make up the cost somewhere else on the backs of other subscribers.
sjtigers 2006-09-04, 01:45 PM I would agree that it might be a lost leader but...
To me it seems like Rogers Cogeco are offering something to keep customers away from Satellite tv.
I personally believe Shaw is too proud of VOD to actually look beyond what they are offering. As well they are double dipping by having Star Choice as well which gives them one more source to take money from people.
Really most sports fans would keep that subscription for 12 months, between Baseball, football and Hockey. I also suspect more people would subscribe to all items rather than just one package.
And yes NFL Sunday Ticket was 34 but now it is 44.95.
Shaw is happy vaccumming up companies, causing havoc for Vonage yet is always last in offering better television.

I agree with this 100%. At the very least, Shaw should be able to offer NHL:CI and I am sure there would be enough customer base for Shaw to
make a profit.
