I have done some searching but just can't find a thing to enable mp3 ringtone on my moto W510 on fido. There has to be a firmware flash out there somewhere. Mobiledit won't do a thing as someone had stated it worked earlier. That person must be lucky and have an older phone not affected by this. So until someone finds out how we are stuck with lame ringtones. Because who would spend 2-3$ plus download charges for 10 seconds of music! ridiculous!

Motorola themself have not made or released any OTHER firmware for this model that asks what you want it to do except the fido branded DRM Restricted one. So unless you know someone who works in their R&D lab and releases it which is a violation of their NDA, then you are poop out of luck.

Well, I just order 3 motorola phones from Fido and one got this new DRM restriction on it.
The other two, I did not have any problem making a Mp3 ringtone on them.

Well, my wife upgraded her phone today to a Motorola MOTOKRZR K1/s and low and behold, uploaded MP3s are not selectable as ring tones, and there's an EULA you have to accept when you start the music player. Wow! Not liking this, but not surprised. The quest for a workaround starts now!

ALL CDS that you buy in canada whether they are for music uploads or for pic uploads or whatever you use a CD for, has a built in music tax. This is distributed to the music industry.
Even if the CD you are using has NOTHING to do with music its still in there. THAT is why it is still not illegal to download any music from Limewire etc. The states have TRIED to get us to change this but so far to no avail. Im quite happy about that.

I have a W580i phone and I can download tons of stuff to listen to but I cannot use any of it for ringtones. I have a site that may help some of you but I have not of yet tried it.

Consumers are the "holder of all the cards". We decide what we will pay for and how much we will pay. We might gripe and moan about it (some clearly do little else but), but we make that decision nonetheless. If we, the collective consumer, decide we don't want the service or product being offered at the price suggested by the provider then we don't buy it. In response, the provider stops offering it, changes the price or makes some other move in an effort to entice us.

The trouble is, with all of the carriers keeping the status quo by degrading the freedom of their services to their frustrating competitors' levels ("Rogers is just keeping up with Telus, etc") it's hard to find a carrier that doesn't try to screw you SOMEhow. In an ideal world, yes, the consumer is king. In the real world, where it's nearly impossible to function without a cell phone, it's difficult to boycott the owning of one. And I say that because what's the point of owning one if you're going to boycott every carrier that's going to screw you over? Whose network do you suppose is going to give you everything you desire? Unlimited talk and text, LD, extensive coverage, bells & whistles, TOTAL ringtone/download freedom, easy in/out contracts or payment plans, no resetting of your contract timeline when you change something in your plan, no fine print and hidden charges, no misunderstandings*, sensible family plans, and all this for a price that doesn't wipe out your budget.

The trouble is, as a working Mom with a hectic schedule and a teenage daughter who I need to keep track of, there's just no way I can't NOT have a cell phone...and PDA...and text...and email. Without this my life would pretty much fall apart (I'm hopelessly absent-minded). This means that I'm going to get screwed by my wireless carrier, which happens to be Rogers right now. It's like owning a car: we can complain all we like about the price of gas, but the bottom line is, if we want to drive to work (and some of us live 45 minutes from work), then we pay what the pump says. I've seen plenty of emails that go around saying to boycott this company or that, but in the end? People are not going to go way out of their way to avoid a gas station that's on their way to work if they're late. And even if they do, as soon as there's a dip in response to the boycott, the cars will line up loooong before the target price. It's just the way of things. Depressing, no? :)

I'm an idealist, too. At heart, anyway. But I'm enough of a realist to know that what is and what should be don't always coincide. Consumer is king, eh? Well it doesn't keep the greedy gears of the business world from turning, driven by the desire for more profit. It doesn't keep companies from being dishonest and misleading their clientele with miles of fine-print, HUGE roaming charges**, downloads you can't use, contracts that get bumped right back up to 3 years when you change something (even if it's 2 years, 364 days into you initial contract), and nearly invisible asterisks at the end of "unlimited web".***

*I went to Rogers to streamline my bill, thought I was getting a "family plan" and found out I'd essentially doubled my monthly bill...for 3 years.

**My parents were in Florida one year and tried to call home. They called many, many times but couldn't reach anyone. No one ever picked up. When they got home, they got nailed with a $400 cell phone bill...even though they never even completed a call.

***I read about that poor guy on Yahoo news who thought "unlimited web" meant he could hook his cell phone up to his laptop and surf anywhere. So he did, it worked great, and at the end of a month, he got a bill for (not kidding here) something like 60 or $80,000. He protested and got it significantly reduced, but wow!

Oh, BTW, the reason I'm on here is to see about getting a work-around for the no-MP3 ringtone problem with my w810i (Rogers). I guess I should just get it unlocked, but I'm not sure what's involved in that. I really could care less about the warranty. It's worked fine for a while now and sustained ample abuse to test it's durability.

I tried clicking the link on the first page about altering MP3's so they were usable, but the link didn't work.

I dont understand why you would want a SIM-unlock when you are trying to achieve a DRM-unlock? why not just use sony ericsson drm unpackager application, its FREE and does NOT void WarranTY

And who are you going to go to? Bell? Telus? Both of them have been preventing this for years.

Really? Well that's news to me, because I've always been able to DL ringtones (that I have uploaded myself to a server). I simply upload the MP3 snippet I want to use, copy the file download number they give me, go to their dl server website, enter in the numbers I got, then proceed to download the the ring tones directly to my phone. After doing so I can use them as incoming caller id ringtones. There are many of these free server websites out there a person can use. As long as you have the unlimited internet option on your phone, you don't get charged 5 cents/kb for it.

My wife is pretty happy and so am I. I guess I should explain. ;) I bought her a Sony W810i GSM world phone (via US online company). The other day she wanted to add a ringtone. I crossed my fingers knowing all the trouble people have been having, dropped the free MP3 file she had downloaded (from the internet) into the memory stick RINGTONE folder, selected it in the phone setup and voilą! All done. Works like a charm.

ROGERS has NO RIGHT to dictate to me what I can do with my phone..... what if I want to create my own song and make it as a ringtone?

Rogers can do whatever the heck it wants.

It may be your "toy truck" but it's their "sandbox" and you have to play by their rules.

I would think the only way around this is to have your phone unlocked. I have a unlocked Razr V3x I bought from eBay and I can do any thing I want with it. If it was up to me every phone would come unlocked and you would buy them directly from the manufacture.

I hate it when people give false information.

unlocking a phone will NOT magically remove the DRM restriction, it simply allows a competitors SIM CARD to be used. FLASHING to a different software MAY remove this as long as the SW your loading does not contain this restriction, which is usually, but not always the case for overseas softwares.
