Hi all. I got a question about download limit. For example, for shaw extreme package when they said monthly 100G download limit. Does it include the download + upload or just the download limit fo that 100G

I routinely go way over my limit. They used to hassle me at first but they havn't in over 5 months now yet I still do at least 200GB/month in traffic.

Quick question: How do you know how much you have been up/downloading on a monthly basis? I am curious as to how much usage I am having.

If you go over your limit, they may give you a warning and then enable a web-based tool for you to track your internet usage. This tool is located under their customer login website.

After you log in to Shaw, click on "Your Modem Usage" and if you are being tracked you will see a monthly graph of you download and upload.

Ya, it's weird. My old account had this button, but when I moved it dispappeared. That was a year ago, and it still hasn't shown back up...

In any case, I too regularaly go over (I think this month I have used ~250GB) and I haven't heard a single word from Shaw. So yea, I think everyone's mileage varies.

When I worked at Shaw, I asked the Internet usage team why some people get called and others don't. They said that a lot of it depends where you live and how busy the hubs are for your area. If you (just the luck of the draw) happen to live in an area where there are a lot of heavy downloaders Shaw makes a point to balance things out. In areas where there is less traffic they don't care nearly as much since you are not affecting the other Shaw subscribers.

i just looked at the modem usage for my account, i've gone over the 60GB limit 10 out of the past 12 months and i've never heard a word from shaw.

i did find this kind of interesting... shaw's take on bit torrent (http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/CustomerCare/InternetSupport/Residential/Sharing/%C3%BATorrent.htm)

I use utorrent and if I used "shaws take on bittorrent" settings I would have to be sharing back a movie download for over a week before I would be entitled to download again. I keep my share at minimum 70% and while I can download a 1.4 gb XviD movie at 500 max. setting, my uploads will never exceed 50 and often 20 to 30 if I'm lucky, no matter what I set my upload at; therefore still taking me a long time to share back 70%. For example I downloaded "Cars" yesterday morning at 500 and I am still uploading it today and I'm only at 54% sharing back. Using Shaw's settings would only work at mininova or 1 of the public sites where leechers can run wild.

I would avoid using Shaw,The speed isn't there anymore I'm getting 400-500kbps download speed on Extreme High Speed I in Greater Vancouver area.

I'm thinking of switching too Telus as Shaw refuses to acknowledge the slow speeds I'm getting.

Shaw Sucks !

I actually disagree, although I am not in the Vancouver area.

Here in Calgary, I can regularly get 1.0-1.3 MB/s on usenet... makes downloading them movies go by pretty quickly ;)

I do have Extreme of course, but have noticed some absolutely amazing speeds.

Of course, DSL cant even come close to touching that currently, not even theoritically.

Cheers,

But what is your upload speed like?

I'd have to agree with you right now (also in the GVRD - Burnaby, to be exact). Over the past 5 days, my Shaw speed has fallen so much that it's actually painful. I tried testing my speeds last night and was receiving 400-600kbps down and 700-900kbps up. Since when was it normal to be getting a higher upload than download?

Anyways, I've contacted Shaw and they refuse (so far) to acknowledge a problem. Perhaps this has something to do with this new service they've introduced? I wonder if they're reserving bandwidth or something...? Either way, I'm not a happy customer right now.

Me too. I live in Surrey. I am thinking of going to the normal high speed.

I live in South Burnaby (Edmonds area) and I have been getting up to 1.2Mb per sec. download on Extreme. Haven't tested much upload though. I used to be MUCH slower than this but within the last few months it's really jumped up. Hopefully that will happen to you too. A buddy of mine has Telus and it is slower than Shaw even at my old speed.

I live in Richmond, BC, and my Shaw Extreme download/upload speed is over 9Mbps/968kbps per Shaw Speed Test.

I agree with Travisbell that ADSL is no comparison to cable high speed internet. I used to be with Telus several years ago, and my download was only a pathetic 600kbps!

One thing you should check first is to make sure you have the Motorola SB5100 (or higher) cable modem. If you still have the old, blue Terayon modem, that's the source of your crawling download. By all means, ask Shaw for a free upgrade to the latest Motorola modem.

This is exactly the reasoning why I think it's good that I live in a "lower income" neighborhood. I don't think too many other users are on the same "node" as me since I doubt many could even afford to pay for Shaw Hi-Speed every month. I always get the full speed out of my service from Shaw, I've never seen or felt that there was a bottleneck on my local node. Living in a more affluent area would actually suck in this case, there'd be more people sharing bandwidth.

Well I switched to normal hi speed from extreme day before yesterday and I checked my speeds and I am downloading quicker than when I had the extreme

Maybe they are screwing me as I do not have their cable package ha ha.....

I cancelled my Xtreme yesterday. I'm in the Edmonton north area. I never saw better than 2 mb/s on Shaw's speed test in the evenings. My bittorrent downloads were never over 70-80 kb/s, suggesting that I'm being throttled (I'm not a heavy user anywa).

After cancelling Xtreme I, things have only gotten worse. Right now, the shaw alternate speed test is showing a download speed of a big 170 kb/s. Pathetic.

However, I have a friend who lives a couple of miles from here, and he says his downloads on his regular Shaw high speed account are great, and he routinely sees 500kb/s or even 1 mb/s for his torrent downloads. I guess he's probably on a different router and has more of it to himself.

I wish there were good alternatives.

If all you are looking at are claims that often not delivered, yes. I had all sorts of problems with Rogers high speed. My current DSL is 99.9% reliable, always runs at full speed and costs less. I have a 100 GB cap, guaranteed. True unlimited service is also available, unlike cable services that promise unlimited but... cut you off without notice above some mysterious number.

Just look at this thread (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=49594). Cable speeds slow down during peaks times or with increased distance and are throttled due to type of content. I get none of that with DSL.

I don't want to start a "mine is better than yours" thread here but please don't make sweeping claims that are not based in fact.
