57,

Is it possible the price you mentioned for Express $46.95 is $3.00 extra due to the price of the modem rental? When you get confirmation, let us know. I was contemplating sticking to Express since I've already bought the cable modem. So, the $3/- modem rental fee should not apply to people who bought the modem.

Thanks.

I had thought about that, but the price for Extreme was as indicated in the letter. I'll advise when/if I hear back.

I like this one much more detailed with QOS ~ click "advanced" after test for details.

I'm on express for about a month and I'm pretty happy.

Express is $43.95 if you own a modem, $46.95 if you rent a modem.

bgclarke, that's what the original letter stated, but the latest e-mail contradicted it. (see the pricing for Extreme without the modem has not changed between the letter and the e-mail) Here's a copy of the E-mail.

Please note that as of August 28, 2006, the total monthly rate for your
Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet Extreme service (“Rogers Extreme Service”) will increase to $51.95 (plus applicable taxes). This is the first rate increase since Rogers Extreme Service was introduced in 2004. Since that time, operational costs have increased.

Your invoice will itemize the Internet service fee and modem rental charge separately. The new monthly rate for Rogers Extreme Service will be $51.95 (plus applicable taxes) and the rental modem charge will remain at $3.00 (plus applicable taxes).

If you are receiving a Better Choice Bundles discount, you will continue to receive this discount on all applicable services as per the terms of the Better Choice Bundles discount.

If you do not need the higher upload rate and usage limit offered by Rogers Extreme Service, you can save by switching to our Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet Express service. Below is a comparison of the two services (excluding any Better Choice Bundles discounts):

Extreme Service/Express Service
Speed down 6 Mbps / 5 Mbps
Speed up 800 Kbps / 384 Kbps
Monthly usage limit 100 GB / 60 GB
Monthly rate $51.95* (as of Aug 28, 2006 )/ $46.95*

Note: Mbps = Megabits per second; Kbps = Kilobits per second; GB = Gigabytes

*Plus applicable taxes
I'm assuming that someone made a mistake in the e-mail (when you compare pricing to the pricing outlined in post 1, which was taken from the original letter), however, that has not yet been confirmed and I have not heard back from Rogers regarding the e-mail

I called Rogers to cancel my high speed since they where upping the price and they offered me $10 off a month for a year to stay. the only catch was that I had to downgrade to expres. considering I own my modem that makes my monthly cost for HS $33.95..

so the only thing I can complain about is the throtling that they are doing on torrents.

oh yeah, anyone who wants to take advantage of the price I got, simply call rogers between 10am to 5pm EST and tell the autamated thing cancel high speed, you'll be transfered to a retention CSR who'll ask why, say with the price going up you can get the same services with a competitor for less, I said $39.99/mth for a year

I wonder what they would say if you told them you were switching to unlimited DSL for $29.95/mo? Sure it's "only" 3 Mb/s but half the sites out there do not deliver that and peer to peer rarely does. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if DSL speeds went up soon to compete with cable.

Are you using a torrent client that does header encryption?

Prior to switching to a client that had header encryption, my downloads were throttled very badly (2 Kbps). I did a download over the weekend and got 248 Kbps on the Express service.

This thread is about the new Rogers pricing. If you wish to discuss torrents, etc, please use an existing torrent thread, or start a new one. Thanks.

Here's Rogers response to my earlier e-mail regarding the confusing pricing in their e-mail.

We are sorry for any confusion that was caused by the last email we have sent you.

Your monthly rate for the Hi Speed Express product is $43.95 per month.
As we suspected, but good to get it confirmed.

Thx 57.

I'm contemplating trying what "M" did above but that would be only if I had an alternative high speed to turn to... :D

Ah well. Express it is. Thx for the confirmation.

So, I get my first bill and it's for $43.95 (Express) - Great I think.

Only, I'm missing my Better Choice Bundle Discount from the internet portion - it's there for the TV portion.

Called Rogers, got it corrected, but CSR says this shouldn't happen since without the discount on both, it wouldn't be a bundle. I agree and we both laugh...

If I read it correctly, the catch with the Better Choice Bundle Discount is that its like a contract. And if you try to break out of it while still within the contract duration, you get charged a penalty fee. I think I have an option to get a bundled discount for like only 5%, but I avoided the bundled discount due to above reason.

It's not really a "penalty" fee, but rather you must pay back the value of the bundle discount you received, up to a maximum per service.

So really you're not any worse off if you opt for the discount and for whatever reason cancel early than if you were just paying the full price to begin with... should work out to be the same amount spent either way.

Here is a copy and paste of the fine print. This is what I read prior and I just dug it up. It looks like you're right, BayStBoi.

Minimum 24-month commitment is required for each of the qualifying service categories. *Early termination fees apply if all eligible services in any bundle service category offered by Rogers Cable are terminated prior to the expiry of the commitment period for the service category.

*Early termination fees: For each Rogers Cable service category (i.e. cable TV, Internet and Rogers Home Phone™) that is terminated prior to the expiry of the 24-month commitment period, Rogers Cable shall be entitled to charge an early termination fee as liquidated damages, which fee shall be equal to the value of the Better Choice Bundles™ discount received in respect of the terminated service category (to a maximum of $100 per service category if the termination occurs during months 1 through 12 of the 24-month commitment period, and to a maximum of $50 per service category if the termination occurs during months 13 through 24 of the 24-month commitment period). For any Rogers Wireless service that is terminated prior to the expiry of the relevant commitment period, early cancellation fees of $20 per month for each month remaining in the commitment period (to a maximum of $200) apply.

I didn't "terminate". I simply switched Extreme (for which I was paying $44.95) to Express (for which I'm paying $43.95). I therefore qualify to continue the bundle.

Earlier, I also switched from their "10 channels of Digital" to the VIP Ultimate and continued to qualify for the Bundle. I'm paying about the same money as I did when I started the bundle.

If you stopped having internet or TV, then the "termination" might apply, or they may simply stop the discount if you remain a Rogers customer. If you stopped being a Rogers customer altogether, then the termination fees would definitely apply.

Cancelling would be different from changing.

ANY change that I have done has always been effective the day of the change. I made several changes recently, some of which reduced the price. (recently changed to VIP Ultimate).

It may therefore depend on the type of change.

When your completely cancelling out your account no matter how many services you have (cable/internet) they require a 30 day notice wich is accepted verbally or written.

When you upgrade a service, for example upgrading your internet speed, a digital channel where possible they do it as of the moment you request it.

Downgrading a service, wether your internet speed or a digital channel, or the internet off your acct wich has both cable and internet or removing cable on the same type of acct is to be effective as of the first day of your next billing cycle. However if you choose to downgrade 1 thing and upgrade another in the same phone call they will make it effective as of that day.

This is supposed to be less confusing on customer's invoices due to prorated charges everytime a change is made

Well, I made the call today.. I use a slingbox and have a couple of IP cameras watching the house, so I didn't want to drop to the "express" and love my upload speed, I convinced the CSR to give me a $25 discount off my next bill. Not the best, but better than nothing! My new adjusted price with the rogers VIP bundle price will be $44.15 for extreme service, permanently.

Well I downgraded from the the Extreme to the Express, but my download speeds decreased roughly from 5.5mbs to 1.5:confused:

With the specialized modem I used originally for the Extreme, does that need to be changed for the Express package?

They may have mistakenly put you on "Lite" instead of Express. Do a few more tests and if that's the case, give them a call. Here's a test site that I find pretty reliable, along with my Express Speeds right now.

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Download Speed: 4855 kbps (606.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 379 kbps (47.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

My speed never varies more than a couple of percent either way.
