Looks like we gonna continue to eat the same cake from last year.

Happy birthday DSR530 Code CC

Thanks for noticing and reminding us of the year that was...
Hopefully the next will be better.

First they said it was the 15th, now the 20th.
The 20th is a Friday, a code download will NEVER start on a Friday, trust me, unless it's an emergency load to correct a catastrophic fatal error.

Preferred days are Tuesdays and can be up to Thursday and never at the beginning or end of the month.

Even the 15th was a bogus date.

Gary P. make me a liar!

Good point about Friday. After all, it's NOT a wise idea to force an upgrade and then take the weekend off when all the bug reports come in. Problem is, as of Saturday, I'll be more than a little pre-occupied with reading a certain book; much too busy for television... :)

Also, I see your point about Monday. Monday support calls are calls for the last 3 days so are always already busy. I'm with ARR on this one: likely Tuesday. Monday Night is IMHO best -- Weekend and Monday support calls taken care of and 4 days to handle all the E4 support calls -- and believe me, there will be a bunch!

Still, Record by Programme Name!!! Woo Hoo!!!

BTW, did someone say they were increasing the number of record slots? Isn't it currently (in CC) 32 or something? Hopefully they go to 128. I usually have about that many Season Passes on my DirecTiVos.

I believe I had the record timers set to 50 and tested it.
It it's not, then they broke it at some point.

This was based on other PVR research I had done.

The 24th is more plausible.
They'll likely meet again on Monday to decide after a week of staff rollouts if things are still a go and given the word, they'll start to make up the list of machines to rollout each day, code should start Tuesday early morning for the first wave.

I was watching "From The Earth To The Moon" last night, and I believe it was easier to design and test the Lunar Module then to roll out an update for these TV boxes.

Well for some TV IS life threatening, so maybe that explains it all.

At least in a space shot if you really screw up, worst case, a handful of people get killed off, but in this racket, millions are affected, marriages break up, spouse abuse ensues, familys go bankrupt...you get the picture. ;)

Why can't they or why won't they do all boxes at once? Why must some wait longer than others for the new code?

ARR

They CAN do EVERYBODY all at once and have done that when there are relatively small numbers for a particular box.
Also when it is designed to fix a FATAL error.

The preference to a stepped deployment is to better manage the call centre volumes and maintain a high level of customer service.

There will be some, albeit very small total system failures, there will some just needing an A.C, power cycle and there will some that need the coax and AC removed in order to revert back to the incumbent code in the event of a failed download so that it can try again another night.

There can also be an abundance of calls, particularly in this case because it will look quite different and some will not be aware of it (Doesn't EVERYBODY read DHC?) And some will just not know how/where to find a feature/operation and some will just not like it and complain.

Imagine the chaos that could ensue if we all got it the same time.

There are 2 types of software download, for those that forget, there is FORCED and OPPORTUNITY.

FORCED is just that, no matter whether the box is in ACTIVE or STANDBY, the d/l WILL occur.
This d/l will be OPPORTUNITY, so IF the box is in STANDBY when it's UNIT ADDRESS comes up, it will reboot to MINIMAL MODE and the screen will fill with numbers and you MUST NOT touch it or you risk trashing the download.
Upon completion, the box reboots again and up comes the new code.
IF the box is active (You are watching TV at ~ 2:00 AM), then the box takes a PASS until it gets caught in STANDBY.

IF after 7 days, the box has still NOT updated, the the receiver switches to FORCED mode and takes the download.

The current version is found in OPTIONS 6-4-7 and just prior to receiving a download, you will see a TARGET version display indicated the box knows new code is up there.

A typical download can be 45 minutes, but has taken up to 1.5 hours depending on precisely where in timing in the FTP code carousel your box catches it.
It must start receiving code from the beginning and if you just missed the start, it will appear to be hung in d/l mode, just be patient, it it's still there late in the morning, then reset it and try the next night, maybe there was a momentary signal problem.

The box will NOT load the new code unless all the checksums verify OK.

So if you want the download, what must you do before going to bed?

I can second that, I'll probably be busy for half the week reading it if its as good as last time ;)

Forget monitoring Options 6-4-7 every 5 minutes to see if it's got a Target Version listed -- I'll be busy for the next while reading it too. :)

Has anyone been able to confirm that the staff rollout has occured yet?

The preference to a stepped deployment is to better manage the call centre volumes and maintain a high level of customer service.

Would that also apply to customers with multiple receivers, so if something goes wrong, at least the customer has an alternative? Can we expect multiple receivers getting code in different session?

By the way, the answer to your quiz, when you get to my age "Go for a Pee!"

LOL, good one!

As for multiple receivers in the house, then it depends on the bank of UA's they are doing that day.

What could possibly go wrong?
A download is carefully choreographed.

Excellent news! It means we're finally getting the new code.

I actually received a little flyer yesterday that illustrated the new guide. It says the rollout will happen during the months of July & August.

Starting Tuesday (as has been said many times) hopefully completed by 1'st week in September on all receivers.

Please please take Arr's advice and power your receivers off at night, it means you will likely get the update much sooner when the receiver is targeted and things will go as smoothly as possible.

The only concern I have about such a slow deployment is if they get too many calls about it or a minor problem, they might stop the download.

This is exactly what happened after 00.BC rolled out.
In spite of it's problems, which later turned out to be bad flash chips, they pulled it mid deployment and left many users hanging with code that had problem's that 00.BC addressed and IMHO, the benefits far outweighed the disadvantages.

Since this code is absolutely necessary for the successful migration to 8PSK, then I think chances are slim of that ever happening.

That said, in the extremely unlikely event that something annoys you enough to call in, maybe wait several weeks and see if it still does.

Any new guide WILL take some time to adjust to.
During the time I had it running over a year ago with 98% completion, I found it to very very comfortable in a matter of hours to days.

Some of the changes are subtle and hardly noticeable, but it those things that make it a fantastic guide.
All those little things that bugged you have been removed.

Have a great POTTER weekend and lets look forward to next Tuesday a.m. for some of us. (fingers crossed)

ARR, does your new guide (and firmware) allow deletion of channels?
I'd like to not be able to see some of them at all (ALA my 40x series - I could block them and they wouldn't show up in the guide, nor scroll through them).

You can already do this with the 530. Just use the parental controls to delete the channels you don't want to see and they won't show up in the guide. They will come up as a blocked channel requiring a password if you scroll through channel up or down. Go Option 4 (parental control) make sure 1 says Enable Locks, press 3 (Channel Locks) and check mark any channels you wish to block from the guide.
