: ON - Bowmanville, Peterborough, Trenton, Kawarthas - OTA
downbeat 2011-03-30, 02:13 AM The deadline for CTV to move to Channel 35 is Aug. 31, 2011, so it's not a surprise. They have no obligation to do it early.
Besides, apart from CTV's situation, you're not in a mandatory conversion area, so things will move a little slower than in mandatory markets. It's not a surprise, really.
wilspin 2011-03-30, 08:06 PM With the license approved I hope they do not wait.
wilspin 2011-04-12, 09:39 PM Was down since last night. Just a white screen. Sunday it would go to static every 1/2 hour for one minute. I guess it finally died. Restored tonite for the debate.
wilspin 2011-04-26, 06:29 PM less than 10 today!
larryjam 2011-05-07, 08:19 PM Hello all, I am living very close to the Darlington Nuclear Plant. I would like to receive the free OTA signals from Toronto and Buffalo.
I live in a Townhouse, and I am restricted as to what type of antenna I can put up. I see this low profile antenna, that mounts on the arm of a satellite, dish.
I believe the Townhouse board of directors would approve of this type of antenna, as it is no different that a satellite dish setup.
Thank You for your help
Larry
stampeder 2011-05-08, 12:53 PM Larry, check through this thread for reports from nearby in Bowmanville to see how others have done, but also have a look at the stealth-class of antenna on the Antenna Chart for the best of those types:
wilspin 2011-05-08, 07:47 PM It should be No problem 4 U larryj. Try for 8 bay antenna with the condo people
kkrash 2011-05-09, 06:35 PM I am located in south Trenton and have been lurking here for over two years. I got a 40ft tower off a friend and hired a local antenna guy to set me up. He got me a used VHF/UHF antenna a new rotor, amp and cabling. I plan to buy an 8-bay when Canada goes all-digital (and money allows).
I am almost directly across from Rochester and they should be my strongest stations, Buffalo is quite the stretch but there is open water between here and there. Toronto is difficult to get (must be all the terrain between here and there) and Syracuse is also hard to get due to Prince Edward County I presume.
My strongest stations are 10 and 51, going down from there is 31, 8, 13, 7 , 4, 2, 49, 26, 3, 21... and there are a bunch of stations that come in only once in a while. Only 10 51 and 31 are consistent enough to rely on. Many times 13 will not be good enough to complete a program.
Isn't 51 in Buffalo? why would I not get the other stations from Rochester before the Buffalo one?
Try as I might, I cannot get any Canadian DTV.
tvlurker 2011-05-09, 07:50 PM Come August 31, you should be able to get CKWS in digital from Brighton, and TVO from Belleville.
Do you get any analog stations from Toronto or Peterborough?
The only new digital stations you can expect in the Fall will be Brighton and Belleville. Peterborough. Within a couple of years, you'll probably get Global from Peterborough in digital, and maybe CHEX.
For US stations, a dedicated VHF antenna may help you with channel 13. A really high gain UHF antenna MAY help you with WROC and WUHF.
To be sure, you should post your TVFool plot. ( I just used a random location near Carrying Place to judge your reception with a 40 foot tower in TVFool.)
kkrash 2011-05-09, 11:31 PM Yes we are in Carrying Place and I have done the tvfool plot.
ANALOG: We get CJOH from Ottawa no matter what kind of antenna (or lack thereof) we have. after that, CKWS from the Brighton tower on channel 66, then TVO on 53 and Global on 27
Digital: WHEC (10) is great but according to TVFOOL, WHAM (13) is supposed to be our next best and it is not.
As I said before, beyond WHEC (10), WPXJ (51) and WUHF (31) it goes downhill quickly. There are a lot of stations but they cannot be counted on to be there for a full show.
Brightonian 2011-05-10, 10:16 AM I used to have a good combination VHF/UHF antenna. 8,10,13,31 and 51 were very good signals. 21 was sketchy.
Then I got a CM4228. 10 and 13 were slightly weaker, but still solid enough where they come in. The others were about the same except 21(RF16) which improved greatly. Seems that combination antennas are not the best for low end uhf.
Also CBC 5 (RF20) from Toronto is very reliable at my location on the lake.
Note: 13 has been marginal the last few evenings and i have lost the signal as well. This does not happen very often.
In general though I can count on 5,8,10,13,21,31,51.
tvlurker 2011-05-10, 11:48 AM Digital: WHEC (10) is great but according to TVFOOL, WHAM (13) is supposed to be our next best and it is not.

One thing about VHF-hi reception that people forget, is that a good directional antenna is good not just for the raw gain on the desired channel, but also for the directivity that makes it more immune to locally generated noise. I believe tht this is one of the reasons that TVFool's NM values can give you a false idea about how easy it is to get VHF-High stations compared to UHF stations, based solely on propagation predicitions.
For that reason, 10 and 13 may come in better with a dedicated directional VHF-Hi antenna.
wilspin 2011-05-11, 08:41 PM I would rate the Rochester signals as best-10,13,8,31,21-worst using separate VHF/UHF heads. Also 51 is in Batavia. Toronto/Buffalo are a long way off, even after the transition u will need premium equipment if you want results.
acncon 2011-06-04, 07:54 PM Hello All,
(Please accept my apologizes if I'm posting incorrectly but I'm new to this. )
We have a cottage on Kasshabog (Kosh) Lake. We currently get about 2 channels - global (2) and Chextv (12) but the reception is horrible. We have tried getting Bell Express VU but have been told that due to the number and size of the trees around us, there is no way it would work. The installer said that the only way to get reception would be to put up a 70+ft antenna with the dish.
We currently have an old antenna (probally put up in the 70's). We don't mind spending the money as long as we can get something that works.
My TV Fool results link are: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d2193d3bd78cfd9
Can someone suggest a viable option for us, if available??
Thank you to all for your assistance in this.
acncon,
Welcome to the forum.
Could you go to Google Earth and try to figure out your Lat/Long co-ordinates and use them to re-do your TV Fool Report?
The report you supplies was too general to be of use in making a good recommendation for you.
For many in rural areas, co-ordinates are needed instead of an address.
There is a big price difference between a 70 foot tower and a 40 foot tower. So it would be good to find out what would be sufficient.
Please re-post that TV Fool and we'll be happy to help.
By the way, TV Fool requires that the lat/long coordinates be in decimal point form.
wilspin 2011-06-08, 09:54 PM You are north of me and on higher ground. It’s quite doable to get half the channels on the fool list. The big problem is the local ‘torches’, keeping them from spilling over onto adjacent channels (CHEX 12 for sure kills 11,13). Take a look at what I use. You can probably get away with 40’ tower.
zenjen 2011-06-09, 12:18 PM Hello, I'm new here and have been researching OTA.
I've been trying to figure out if I'll be able to get reception here but I have to admit that I don't understand all the technical stuff.
Here's my TvFool report:

Any help or advice is appreciated.
Btw, we will not be using a tower but mounting an antenna to the roof.
wilspin 2011-06-10, 02:07 PM Wow, you have line of site to Fox 31, Rochester will be a cakewalk for you. Rotor and preamp will be a must for Toronto/Buffalo.
crossfire 2011-06-10, 03:57 PM Iam in Colborne and for the most part I get all Rochester stations and the main Buffalo stations. Syracuse stations are a hit and miss.Do get CBC Toronto and sometimes Omni. I have a CM eight bay with a preamp. Have it pointed between Rochester and Buffalo.
wilspin 2011-06-25, 08:52 PM I have updated my fool report album. I separated digitals from analogue as the list is too long and is cut off at the bottom. Here is the link if you want to manipulate the data itself;
http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d03d9b5de5b4021
About analogue. I only watch the locals, I do get stuff from the CN tower, VHF is best UHF not good. the rest of the list is not watchable. This includes CKVR 3 and Global 2 which are high on the list but poor quality.
About digital. I do not get WWNY, CHCH, WNGS, none off the CN tower except CBLT, WNYB TCT is tropo only .The Rochester TCT 42 is not on the list but comes in quite often. The rest of the list is quite watchable.
