PrinceLH 2009-07-14, 12:33 AM Over at the Sandbanks, you might want to check 44.1(43.1) WNYS, the MyTV affilliate in Syracuse. You've got a great area to work with. Also give WETM 18.1 out of Elmira, just to the west a try, on a good night. Also try 27.1, 29.1 and 30.1 just to the east of Syracuse, you might get the three networks out of Utica, NY, with NBC 29.1(2.1) being the most likely. If your feeling lucky, try Binghamton, NY, pretty much the same direction as Syracuse, but 45 miles to the south. 4.1, 7.1, 8.1, 34.1, 42.1. Happy DXing!

Are you getting your guide for WWNY and WSYT right now?
tlamothe 2009-07-14, 10:02 PM I picked up a Magnavox ATSC converter box from Walmart in Kingston tonight. (It was the only one, so I scooped it) WWTI maps properly (50.1) and shows guide information. WWNY is still showing no info for guide.
Definately our Samsungs are having problems with the mapping of WWTI and its subfeed but not our problem for WWNY's guide information.
I was seeing most of the syracuse channels tonight with the exception of ION. Pretty impressive for a broken piece of 300 ohm cable. Antenna is being fixed on Thursday and getting the rotor repaired as well.
stampeder 2009-07-15, 09:06 AM tlmamothe, I hope you'll post a review of that Magnavox converter box in here if you have time:

crossfire 2009-07-15, 09:59 AM I picked up a Tivax STBT8 this past weekend along with a four bay antenna. Plug and play works well. My only issue is that I no longer can lock 10.1 and 13.1 out of Rochester. Which are VHF.
stampeder 2009-07-15, 10:03 AM I was just looking at an earlier post of yours, crossfire, and are you still using an older antenna or have you switched?
crossfire 2009-07-15, 10:40 AM Still using the old antenna for my HDTV in my den. The new four bay is being used in a bedroom on a four year old 32" RCA which is Analog. Receiving far more channels with the four bay. With the exception of 10.1 and 13.1 which I receive well with the old antenna.
feedbak 2009-07-15, 10:58 AM Definately our Samsungs are having problems with the mapping of WWTI and its subfeed but not our problem for WWNY's guide information.Awesome thanks for the info. Doubt Sammy will fix it. Will just have to liive with it I guess. Would be better if it still showed programming guide, dont care about the mapping as much.

Are you getting your guide for WWNY and WSYT right now?
I will have to check. I'm actually going to hook up my pc to the tv and use the online TV guide through titantv.com Looks like a great web page and is fully customizable.
nursedude 2009-07-16, 05:03 PM I'm playing with a set of amplified "rabbit ears" by Phillips that I got from a local Radio Shack. We live on the second floor of a 2 story wood frame building with a decent S exposure. ThiIs aft with the HD part of the rebbit ears facing SSW I can get the following:
CH ID Resolution Signal Strength
2.1 WGRZ-HD 1080i 75%
2.1 WGRZ-US 480I 75%
4.1 WIUB-HD 1080i 76%
17.1 WNED-HD 1080i 59%
17.2 WNED-SD 480i 58%
17.3 WNED-TH 480i 59%
23.1 WNLO-HD 1080i 60%
51.1 ION 480i 65%
51.2 QUBO 480i 61%
51.3 ION LIFE 480i 62%
51.4 Worship 480i 63%
I'm surprised to get Buffalo so clearly at this distance and will try Rochester later.
tlamothe 2009-07-17, 12:54 AM Antenna has been reconnected, rotor is installed and working.
I get all the Syracuse digitals except for WSPX (real 15) and I get quite a few Ottawa analogs.
I am also getting TVO, SRC and CKWS on many channels. I think filters may help.
I'll post the full list tomorrow some time.

feedbak 2009-07-17, 01:47 PM wow that is alot of channels, who needs cable or sat :)
feedbak 2009-07-17, 01:51 PM tlamothe, how high is your antenna up?
tlamothe 2009-07-17, 03:12 PM The antenna stands about 35 feet above ground. Don't forget some of those channels are Tropo so I expect only to receive Kingston, Watertown and some Syracuse once the weather changes. Ottawa at 80 miles out really pushes it but Global on 2 is about the same and it comes in for the most part year round. I should have a better idea once the rain moves in over the weekend as to what I should expect for television. I am impressed though with the results from Ottawa. Would be nice if it was digital channels, but people can't get some of the digitals from within Ottawa. (*cough* Omni *cough*)
PrinceLH 2009-07-17, 09:22 PM You should give the Utica/Rome stations a shot, on 27, 29 and 30. I was getting 29(2.1, 2.2) earlier tonight, here in Belleville.
tlamothe 2009-07-19, 01:16 AM Not much luck on those channels. They do sometimes stop on the autosxan and think about it, then move along.
Tonight has been a poor night, just mainly Watertown digitals and Ottawa analogs. I was getting 68 out of Syracuse poorly, so that gave me a chance to play and see what I can do to improve things. Adding splitters to the line up help improved the stability of the signal. With no splitters, I had to aim dead on to get a signal, with 2 splitters, I had 20 degrees to play with before I would lose the signal.
Mr Frugal 2009-07-19, 02:59 PM I'm trying to covince my Wife that a roof mount antenna would free us from the chains of Cogeco. I don't want to spend a couple hundred bucks on gear and then find out the reception sucks. (And if that CRTC ruling allows the Kingston local station to stop OTA broadcast).
tlamothe, Where In Kingston are you located? I'm out near the airport (NOT in that former gravel pit now quaintly known as 'Conservatory Pond') so the elevation appears relatively decent.
I have a basic set of rabbit ears that have been hanging around for years that I'm going to try. Then maybe I'll try building one. Just for the halibut!
If I can get just a couple of HD channels out of the U.S., I'd be happy. We watch so little television that paying those cable bandits seems a waste.
stampeder 2009-07-20, 12:45 AM Mr. Frugal, when you're ready to build an antenna here is where to start:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=81982
Don't bother with any of the coat hanger garbage out there on the net. ;)
I'm in Kingston and picked up an RCA CANT501 indoor antenna and was only able to get 1 channel (CKWS), the other couple of channels were basically unwatchable. Is this due to the antenna or am I doing something wrong? I know the antenna isn't ideal but I was expecting to be able to pick up more than 1 good channel.
