: Setanta in Canada (General Discussion)

I see that Setanta is back operating in the UK under a new name (www.premiersports.tv). I doubt they will go (or even be allowed) anywhere near the EPL rights in the UK but they might pick up some other rights or shows that might carry over to Setanta Canada.

It's all unbelievable really. I'm now with Shaw Direct and have the high-definition package(first time). There is no Setanta HD or Sportsnet One available(unless I'm missing something)which in itself is sad! There are less live games than last season. Chelsea vs. Stoke on Setanta SD is almost nauseating the picture is so bad. The first part of the Spurs game on Sportsnet HD was for some reason shown in a standard aspect but the picture was still 10X better than Setanta's. Thankfully, TSN2 HD has rights now beacause they have been blowing them both out of the water(Setanta more so) for the last few weeks now. There is no comparison! I'll miss the Championship, cups, Tri Nations, and Super 14 but unless something dramatically changes in the next few weeks, I'll be spending my $15 on something else until it's fixed!

My two cents anyways,
Cheers

As I've said before the setanta sd quality for me is the same as last year and acceptable. Even though the Tottenham game started with bars on the side, it still was indicated as hd from fsc so should certainly have been better than the setanta sd broadcast.

For truly execrable quality, the goltv sd broadcast of the Valencia game now is terrible, as it generally was last season.

I sure wish someone else from Winnipeg on shaw would comment on setanta sd quality or people would at least put their locations in their profiles!

As everyone has said, it is not unique to Winnipeg and it isn't a Shaw issue. The PQ looks like an internet stream (SD and HD) on every provider.

You can get the online streaming free on sportsnet for 30 days, if you sign up before Monday. I was surprised how good the Manchester game looked today.

I didn't say anything was unique to Winnipeg or shaw, I haven't seen anyone else from here with shaw comment on setanta's sd quality this season. The PQ does not look like an internet stream to me it looks the same as last year.

Has your sd PQ changed from last season?

Profile edited to say Southern Ontario and the picture was still terrible. You would swear they were driving the cameraman up and down the side of the pitch on the back of a pick up truck! Whether or not it's changed from last year, I can't say as I've just switched from ExpressVu but compared to other standard definition broadcasts on different stations, it's not great.

Then the problem is you are now paying $15/month for access to matches from ONE league. I hate this.

I have even dropped Sportsnet until NHL regular season starts. I will download or watch 'illegal' streams until this is sorted out. I can't even pay for what I want to watch!

Can't comment from last year, but based on two years ago, yes it looks a lot worse. Even watching highlights of matches from Setanta on The Score or Sportsnet the picture looks choppy and laggy. It certainly looks a lot worse (SD and HD) than any other channel I can think of. Gol TV is slightly better and FSWC is much better.

I know why the PQ is worse. This is their upgraded processing hardware.

They must have the turbo button set to off ;)

Has your sd PQ changed from last season?

Absolutely. The frame rate is lower and so the action appears blurrier.

Tired of low PQ on Setanta SD? Subscribe to Setanta HD. Or Sportsnet on-line. Or Sportsnet One. What's another $5-10/mth? Just freeview the new stuff for a month and no one will complain. Is it just me, or is it another ploy from Rogers?

Judging by what I've seen of Setanta's HD quality, it isn't much better. It skips frames too and doesn't look any better than upconverted SD (if its even that good). The Score was showing highlights from Setanta and FSC earlier today and the FSC highlights (of the same game) were a million times better. I don't think its a ploy from Rogers, its simply a mistake that they are too lazy (or cheap) to fix.

Seriously I can't agree. For me Setanta HD is not as good as e.g. TSN HD but it is infinitely superior to last year when watching 4:3 SD on a widescreen tv. I would place the picture quality, on a widescreen tv, as somewhere between widescreen format and HD and that is still very acceptable to me visually.

I switched to dish but wouldn't mind having Setanta HD even though the picture is so screwed up, still better than Fox Soccer Plus SD even though Dish SD picture is miles ahead of Bell's SD quality.

From what I seen, Setanta HD has a good picture quality but seems to be jumpy like an internet stream. You would think that they would be able to figure it out? The channel seems to suffer from a lack of anybody working there giving a ****.

Anyone else having reception problems with Setanta HD tonight on Rogers in Toronto? I am getting audio only, no video. SD Setanta is fine.

eidt - Note that this is not like the problem you get when you can't tune an SDV channel (which Setanta HD is). When that happens it tells you that it can't tune the channel and then it splashes up text saying "Press Any Key to Watch TV" (or something like that ) that moves around like a screen saver.

Well, thankfully it's happening to you too...:-) it's not my signal then. I didn't have Setanta HD for a couple of hours this evening, like you said, just got audio only. It has come back as of around 1045pm.

I have Setanta on BellTv And Shaw(Winnipeg) and they both have the same lousy internet stream quality.

The other day i seen the Vancouver/Toronto Soccer game on Sentana and it still was the same poor quality, even though the game was shown on sportsnet and looked fine earlier. So its not like they are getting poor feeds, so why would a pay per month channel broadcast so poor on there end?

It's been a great weekend of content on Setanta - for some reason there is no soccer cluttering up the schedule so we get to watch all kinds of Rugby like TriNations, Currie Cup, Magners League, Aviva Premiership (English domestic), ITM Cup (NZ Premiership).
