: Setanta in Canada (General Discussion)
robin100 2009-07-21, 06:53 PM Setanta web site now advertising EPL for next season - 3 as usual on Saturday, 1 on Sunday and 1st choice on all midweek games.
Also see this recent extracy from the Irish Examiner
Following their very public loss of broadcast rights for the Premier League in England, Setanta Ireland regained the rights this week to broadcast some 33 EPL matches in Ireland. This development is seen as a critical step in the survival of the Irish owned company which also has offices in San Francisco and supplies the vast majority of British and Irish sports to the American based viewer. The new corporate entity (the Premier League required Setanta to establish a new holding company to ensure legal separation from its British predecessor) is believed to be called Setanta Hibernian and registered in Luxembourg. It is understood that Irish and British sporting events, screened to the American audience, will continue unabated.
Wayne 2009-07-21, 09:50 PM Hopefully America includes Canada.
robin100 2009-07-22, 11:51 AM To clarify - the Setanta website which is advertising the EPL games, champions league etc is Setanta Canada
Steele-in-HD 2009-07-25, 12:20 PM Just saw a commercial on SportsNet HD for the upcoming champions league season.
It said that Sentanta and Rogers SportsNet were going to be showing every CL league game with most of them available in HD.
That is good news. Can't wait to see what it really means.
NB Josh 2009-07-25, 10:44 PM Yea when I first saw it I wondered if they will be launching Setanta HD, after seeing it a couple more times I think they just mean the games on Sportsnet will be in HD though. I expect them to offer at least 2 different games on Sportsnet at a time.
robin100 2009-07-28, 09:41 PM Setanta seems to be going along as is. Next week end has the Man Utd v Chelsea Community shield match, Fri-Sun has Championship matches and the following week has lower league Carling Cup. This all before EPL kicks off!

I doubt will see Setanta in HD. However, Sportsnet is adding HD versions of their regional channels (east, west, central)
robin100 2009-08-01, 09:37 AM Looking at the website of the guy out west it shows games up to around 20 August. There is a proverbial flood of games on Setanta and they would seem to be the same as last season except, of course, the studio programs .

My thoughts exactly, what the heck are you talking about bud?!
The guy was basically stating that Setanta Canada will have EPL this year, its Setanta UK that shut down.

Exactly right PlayitSimple it should be business as usual for both Setanta Canada and US this season what is interesting is that the international rights for EPL games for the 10/11 season will need new rightsholders and it's not known that Setanta will bid for them
PlayitSimple 2009-08-01, 11:28 PM People don't seem to understand that Setanta Sports Canada is really Rogers! Its a Canadian digital channel that is majority owned by Rogers (66.7%) and has a licensing deal with Setanta to use its name and possibly some programming from them (rugby/magazine shows). Setanta own a minority stake in this venture (33.3%) but Rogers is in the drivers seat here not Setanta.
As for the EPL rights, I think you may see the same players involved namely The Score & Rogers (via Setanta Sports Canada) sharing the matches. Bottom line EPL fans have nothing to worry about, your weekly dose of footy will still be there come this August. :)
My comment happened to be prompted by post #801, part of which read:
The new corporate entity (the Premier League required Setanta to establish a new holding company to ensure legal separation from its British predecessor) is believed to be called Setanta Hibernian and registered in Luxembourg.
The intention was to show the above instead of what appeared. Sorry.

Andrew1 2009-08-03, 02:09 PM Looking at their schedule for next Saturday (Aug.8) I see they've got Le Championnat (French) football back this year. Also the Tri-Nations match between the Springboks and Wallabies is on live unlike most rugby internationals on Setanta. Perhaps other Tri-Nations matches were live too this year (I haven't had Setanta for a couple of months) but previously live for rugby meant PPV.
robin100 2009-08-03, 10:27 PM Yes, all the trI-nations have been live until now but any after this week end will, I'm sure, be pre-empted by EPL. This Sat they also have a delay of West Brom v Newcastle.
Previously there have been questions and hopes re- ESPN commentator Derek Rae. I see that he has now moved with ESPN to UK and will be their SPL commentator. Ex-Setanta people like John Champion and Rebecca Lowe also have joined ESPN in UK.

hyperpuppy 2009-08-09, 10:46 AM I would be very interested to know if anyone else is trying to watch the Community Shield game between Man U and Chelsea right now on Setanta and having the sound and picture cut out about every 10 seconds? I watched Setanta all last season and had no sound cut outs like this. It is very annoying to say the least. Would be great to know if anyone else is experiencing this problem or if it just my box?

I'm in Downtown Toronto and the sound is good for me. Only drop out of sound was when the commentators mic stopped working; I could faintly hear him in the background, but his sidekick was still audible.
doglips 2009-08-09, 10:59 AM No problems so far in Winnipeg (except for the score ;) ) other than issue mentioned above which seemed to have been a problem at the source.

I am in Winnipeg also, St James area. Which part of the city are you in may I ask? Interesting that you are having no problems as I see you have Shaw also. Guess I have to try and call Shaw, not that they wil do anything. Oh Chelsea just scored, guess you are happier now..lol
