: Setanta in Canada (General Discussion)

In previous seasons, before Setanta appeared on the scene, discussing this abject unsportsmanship aspect of the commentaries at Old Trafford, I have been informed that it was to be expected since Man Utd owned a certain percentage of the broadcaster who invariably brought us the Man Utd games. If, as you say, there is still available another source that does not engage in this one-sided approach to commentating on a match, which essentially involves two teams and watched by two sets of supporters, then I appreciate being pointed in that direction. I obviously have to rely on more than just Setanta from now on.

You seem to be "in the know" thefly -thanks for the information.

I just happened to turn on at 6pm this evening and there was the England - France rugby game that I missed on the weekend. It will be good when the schedule is up and running.
I've been emailing with the President of Setanta back and forth for a number of weeks. I've gotten all of my info directly from him.

As for the one sided commentary on Man Utd (I must confess I am a Utd fan) as pointed out this is due to watching MUTV which is a channel run by and produced by ManUtd. They carry all of their games which are shown tape delayed. The original broadcast with be on in the morning (either live or slight tape delay) and is broadcasted by either Sky or Setanta UK.

Can you tell him in your next e-mail that Rogers' viewers in Newfoundland are pi$$ed off.

We're not getting the free preview month like the rest of the country

I can and will but I know that this is a decision taken by Rogers and not Setanta - Setanta offered the same package to everyone and suggested to each cable provider to offer a fress month

$15 a month is worth it to hardcore EPL fans, for me it is not. I am casual follower but that is it. I will be 'happy' with my Goltv, CBC, Sportsnet, TLN, HDNet and TSN coverage.
Well said, I think for $15 a month this should be a HD channel.
If the race for the title is close I may pay for the last month of the season at most.

Ok, I need some help here.
I am on Bell ExpressVu for condos and still do not have Setanta. I tried channel 420 - nothing, talk to Bell CSR yesterday, he told me, it is not up yet although he did not sound convincing at all. Now I read that some people have Setanta on ExpressVu. Can anybody that is with Bell confirm this? Also please let me know are you using ExpressVu for condos or not.
Thanks in advance.

stevans, please ask ExpressVu specific questions in the ExpressVu forum. Try 67964.

I've had Setanta on my EVu system since Sat. am. It's not a "for condos" system.

Sportsfan, thanks a lot. FYI, Bell offers ExpressVu in two modes:
Satellite
'For Condos' - In some newer condos that are I guess properly 'wired' , Bell has the ability to offer the ExpressVu through your telephone line.

Just watching Hurling. That's worth the $15 on it's own. Talk about a tough game!! North Americans think that hockey and football (not soccer) are tough sports. But these guys wear almost no protection. Rugby and Aussie Rules are even tougher. Fans in NA are missing out on so many great sports, with their obsession with football, baseball etc. I'm not crazy about shelling out an extra $15 a month but from what I've seen so far, i think I'm going to like Setanta.

I had my PVR scheduled to record Spurs v. Everton. I get home and nothing's recorded, just a blank screen. I check the online Setanta schedule and they have a replay at 10pm. I wait, turn on the TV, it's hurling. I finaly get on the interweb and find that Spurs lost 3-1 at home. Not a good day to be a Spurs fan :(

If you live in Ontario, and have digital cable with Rogers, Setanta has a free preview on channel 429 until Sept. 10.

I'm watching a replay of the Vila / Liverpool game right now.
only if you have 860 mhz feed: if, like me, you live in one of the rural areas still on 600 mhz feed channel 429 is a ppv movie channel and there is no Setanta (no Gol TV or ROD or VOD) but we do get to pay the same as everyone else...

when contacted Rogers have finally committed to a timeline for the upgrade to 860 mhz -- supposed to be November for those outside St.Thomas...

I've been watching the free preview...and the transmission quality sucks. As for the promised commentary...who cares? I don't need the comically biased commentary to enjoy the games...which were on basic cable last year! Celebrating this package is like asking for another after Rogers whops you upside the head. ;)

Enjoy fellas...like I said, I hope they go bankrupt.

well buddy who is whining about the free games last year. Everything comes with a price. Not to say the fact rogers sportsnet isn't showing more games then the 1 sat 10:00 game they do doesn't suck. But from a "world sport fan" standpoint. This package supports the epl fan, the spl fan, the afl fan, and the rugby fans, as well as the rest of the international sport fans here in Canada. I am not personally an epl fan...I think soccer is boreing. But I will/am paying 14.99/month for the rugby and afl coverage this amazing, great, perfect channel shows. The only thing I have to ask, if you're a big epl fan, and if you were living in the u.k. how much per month would you have to pay for sky sports-1, setanta-1, mu-channel and chelsea-tv to get the coverage we get here on 1 channel? I presume a bit more then $14.99 Canadian/month.

Looks like the full Canadian schedule for the month of August is now available online at

plus September's "live" schedule is there.

Now all we need is Rogers to show the correct EPG and we'll be set!

I just noticed that. Nice to see the Euro qualifiers and friendlies on there. I'm going to the cottage for a week. Looks like the PVR will be full when I get back.

Soccer is boring, and the afl isn't? The audacity of it all eh

I have to agree with sudsyjkh.

I don't like soccer either. It's all for the AFL and Rugby coverage. The Geelong Cats will win the AFL premiership this season.

Lots of transmission problems again today during the Man City/Man United game, at least on Expressvu. Loss of picture and breaking up consistently throughout the game.

Are the people on Rogers, Shaw etc having the same problem or is this an Expressvu fault? There were no probs in the Liverpool Chelsea game on TheScore.

If it's a Setanta issue, they'd better get it cleared up if they want people to subscibe
