: Setanta in Canada (General Discussion)

British and European football fans are happy to have this channel, and you won't find most of them whinging about it. The sportsnet thing was a joke, and to sit there listening to folks that have never kicked a ball, and a goalkeeper that really didn't do much with west ham, doesn't really compare to the sky sports commentary on setanta.

Am happy with, may be that is because I grew up with the game, played it, along with rugby and cricket, and know the rules like the back of my hands ;)

Now all I need is some test cricket and there'll be nothing left for me to complain about. I doubt if Setanta will bother with that as it would take up too much of their schedule, but if they got another channel...

[quote]For what it carries its definitely gonna be worth the 15 dollars a month price tag, I recall the days of having to scrounge around the papers the next day to maybe find out the soccer of an English game the day before, or watching Graham Leggit giving us highlites on soccer Saturday that were a week old, thank God those days are gone.[quote]

Should have been here when for years the FA Cup Final was a week delayed, and you had to tell your friends not to even mention it on the pain of death. There has been an obvious lack of planning by Setanta, for there was a complete static screen and no sound during the whole of the intermission at the Stamford Bridge game. Anyone tuning in for the first time must have thought Setanta hadn't got up and running despite all the talk and went elsewhere thoroughly disappointed. All they had to do was put a notice on the screen that the coverage of the game would be resumed after the intermission. Very amateurish if you ask me. But if it is the only way to get my soccer then $15/mo will be paid at the expense of other programming.

I will happily pay the 15-goodbye sportspak-wont be watching much bb or nfl & that only in HD anyway.

There were tech issues yesterday -havent watched all spurs yet (recorded it) but break ups were bad & of course wolves were on for about 15 minute before the liverpool feed kicked in.

Granted the channel was up & running in a hurry I expect that these glitches were to be expected & it might have been worse.

PQ generally good though variable.

In case anyone is as dumb as me & has stretched sd problems I found out that I was watching poor sd quality for about 6 months on my 51" tosh because I was streching an already zoomed image.

When I set my tv to natural on my rogers remote I get a decent 4:3 image at 480 p then I can stetch it with minimal damage using my tosh remote. There is some residual fuzziness not two bad would be overcome by moving my rear wall back!!

Unless I am mistaken we get 2 hd games now on rogers sportsnet & the score -if not HD theyare better qulaity images than before.

Along withrugby etc which we had no access before we get SPL games & Dutch league as well-all good & worth the fee IMHO. Of course it is true we used to get 50-60% of that for no extra cost not an issue to me but especially if you only want EPL Ican understand the annoyance.

Wouldnt bother me not to see Manu or Chelsea but I would be outraged not to see Liverpool so again these folk have a point if you want to see thes clubs youll probably have to get Setanta -kind of opposite to how the nfl operates -if you follow a team in the nfl that is not local or playoff bound you need sportspak the successfuk clubs are onNetwork tv .

Didn't have time to see anything live yesterday so I recorded the replay of the England France rugby game (on both of my TV's) just to be sure and all I got was the last half of a soccer game and then and endless loop of commercials.

Really a major bummer.

It sounds like there were other issues - hopefully it's only teething problems - it would be nice to be able to rely of the advertised programming.

$15 a month is worth it to hardcore EPL fans, for me it is not. I am casual follower but that is it. I will be 'happy' with my Goltv, CBC, Sportsnet, TLN, HDNet and TSN coverage.

This is driving me crazy - I attempted to record three more programs overnight and all I got was the same enless loop of Setanta promos or commercials. This has now happened four times. I am with Shaw.

Do you think it's because of the free preview or teething problems. I will call Shaw but they are usually clueless.

What schedule? For the first time yesterday I switched to channel 154 and for more than 30 minutes (between 9PM and 9:30PM+) there was continuous loop of Setanta promo. Got sick of that and turned TV off. Luckily it was free preview because for $15.00/month I expect more.

Regarding the picture quality on Setanta - I watched yesterday's England-France rugby game and the picture was not better or worse than any other SD channel - and this is on a 50" TV so you can definitely see any shortcomings in quality.

I think there are initial problems which will easily be resolved, and indeed maybe the free preview is only meant to be a flavour of what is likely. Their website is still being revamped so the only scheduling I see is on Express Vu and it is not very accurate, especially with the repeat showings, and even Arsenal today. Setanta is also showing the Score Sunday game a few hours delayed. The extended Setanta ads I would imagine are likely to be replaced by things like EPL weekly review, SPL weekly review, excerpts from Man U and Chelsea tv etc as these run each week on Setanta USA.
For those interested the Express Vu Monday schedule shows a Carling Cup match at 3pm and 2 hour delay SPL Kilmarnock v Dundee Utd at 5pm. Also I read that Celtic v Spartak is on tape delay by a few hours on Wed, I think 5pm.
So, in summary, I believe Setanta will show repeats of some matches but not the endless repeats we are getting just now and these will be interspersed with other shorter programs, not to mention finding space for rugby such as world cup and 6 nations. Like others I enjoyed the 'free' matches of before but this is more extensive sports coverage, is the way things are going in all tv sports, and at less than $4 per week is more than acceptable.

So the programming is differant? Sentana US didn't show liverpool FSC US did. But sentana canada did show it ??

Rogers Sportsnet even showed a game today, I thought they were not showing anything this season ?? Confusing. We need to make a schedule list for games/networks for next weekend
Has been done already:

http://frasm.sasktelwebsite.net/footie.html

And just to clear up some confusion about the schedule and "dead loops" etc. At the moment Setanta Canada is not an authorized channel by the CRTC - it is a PPV sports pack. Becuase of this they cannot show magazine shows etc (such as weekend wrapups etc). They are working with Rogers who has a licence for a soccer channel to launch soon (maybe by January). Until then they will only be showing live or tape delayed games.

The schedule right now on the guide is taken from the US Setanta. While this is correct some of the time, it isn't always right (for example when a magazine style show is on US). Lastly, Setanta US shares the rights to the EPL with Fox Sports World. Here they don't so we see more games here then the US.

Hope this answers some questions.

If you live in Ontario, and have digital cable with Rogers, Setanta has a free preview on channel 429 until Sept. 10.

I'm watching a replay of the Vila / Liverpool game right now.

I hope we don't have to wait till January for the magazine shows - I don't think we will as last night at about 10 0r 11 pm Pacific there was the Monday morning "chat" show from the Manchester United channel.

I hope the scheduling gets published soon.

They are allowed to show shows from Manchester United TV (MUTV) and Chelsea TV. They cannot however show their own magazine style or Sky Sports etc shows until they are a "channel". I understand that their website will be updated by the last week of August to have a dedicated Canada section which should include a full schedule.

You seem to be "in the know" thefly -thanks for the information.

I just happened to turn on at 6pm this evening and there was the England - France rugby game that I missed on the weekend. It will be good when the schedule is up and running.

How much longer do we have to endure the blatant one-sided commentaries by the two PR guys on MUTV ? Is there in fact another broadcasting source for games played at Old Trafford that Setanta could use to bring those games to those of us who are not supporters of Man Utd ?

jgvp,

That's because you are watching the MUTV version of the match. The regular feed on Sunday morning had the skysports commentators.
