There was a problem with the HD satellite feed. It was resolved in the first hour, but the changeover had to be delayed to make a safe transition.
Can you tell us what this means... for example what is a safe or unsafe transition?

Couldn't they have done the changeover during one of the dozens or more commercial breaks?

What was special about that point in the last moments of the third quarter that made it worth holding off fixing the problem?

Anyone know when CBC's second HD truck will arrive?...

The truck will not be ready for the start of the hockey season. CBC builds its own trucks, so it 'arrives' when it's built and tested. I will post something as it nears completion, but that is months away.

Just out of curiousity Marc, how well did the finals in HD go over? Do you folks have any stats yet on the number of viewers watching in HD vs SD? If so, are the number promising?

Too bad about the truck... hopefully it's ready before Christmas.

The program ratings are not broken down into SD or HD. I see them as programs only.

Transmitter testing is scheduled to begin in September.

Marc,

Do you know how long the Ottawa transmitter testing will take? (or a guesstimate based on how long it took for the other locations - toronto, vancouver)

Thanks
Simon

Three weeks is typical, if all goes smoothly.

Awsome News! Thanks! Now I have to look at getting an ATSC tuner one way or another.

For Ottawans just be patient with Marc and the CBCers. The Vancouver test period went smooth as silk to us home-viewers, but in the many months since then a few bugs have been worked on, but what a great job they've done! :)

Here is the OTA Forum's ON/QC - Ottawa/Outaouais - OTA thread for discussing reception:

Interesting to get it OTA before I get it from SC. Now let's see if we get non-Leafs hockey games. Am I thinking out loud? :)

I will keep an eye for it! Channels 22 and 25, right?

Would that mean that technically speaking, we could have the Vancouver CBC HD in with the timeshifts?

I know what timeshifts are, but I don't follow your meaning in this context.

Can you tell us what this means? What is a safe transition? Couldn't this have been fixed almost instantly? The weather was perfect so satellite reception should have been fine.

Something positive on CBC-HD today.... I know it's minor but we have to encourage any progress no matter how slight.

They are showing an East Indian movie in HD. Sure this isn't exactly a blockbuster, but I would contend this is exactly what CBC-HD ought to be be doing more of... showing interesting HD content that is alternative and under represented on the mainstream commercial networks. Sure it only represents 1% of their potential, but bravo to CBC-HD on taking this albeit tiny step in the right direction.

With that domestic "11 cameras" show and USA's "The One", this gives them 8 HD hours (or 8.75 hours if you count the tail end of the CFL game) for the week, or approximately 5% of their potential.

If they can learn from other broadcasters like TMN & MC on how to obtain the readily available HD movie masters, and from TSN on how to get the sports coverage working better, they could be up into 6-7% soon.

Marc,
Sorry about my post. I must've been tired cause this morning, to me, it doesn't make sense either. :o
What I meant was, if there is a Vancouver CBC HD, would distributers add that station to the timeshift stations? So, if I missed the Nature of Things at 10:00 AST, then 4 hours later I could still watch it on the west coast feed.

After reading this, your previous post makes more sense!! :)

A cable company must carry the local over air feeds, but as far as I know there is no obligation to carry timeshifts. CBC will make the signal available to any carrier wishing to add it to their lineup.

Do they do anything special when DT stations go on the air? Like official launch, special programming, etc...

I don't recall the Toronto HD station having anything special when it went on air.
In fact I was surprised there was hardly anything mentioned anywhere about it.

I guess when the National goes HD in the fall, something will show up.
