So what do I need to access this station OTA?

I did not even know that there was a signal at channel 25. I thought they were at 4.

The analog station is on channel 4. The new DTV station will be on 25. When it goes on air (sometime later this year?) you will need either a TV with a built in ATSC tuner (only a few HDTVs, typically the large ones, seem to have them) or an external ATSC tuner, which are very difucult to find in Canada (I don't know of anyone in Ottawa who sells them). For more info, check out some of the other threads in this forum.

Marc, as mentioned earlier, the CBC schedule seems to be "missing" some of the movies that come on in HD (Station Agent). See the following thread:

http://digitalhomecanada.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44130

See post 9. It sure would be nice if we knew if these movies were on in HD as the time comes near, we would tune in....

I forwarded your comments to the cbc.ca/hdtv people. I'm told an overhaul is in the works. No details were provided.

Marc,

Could you please ask them to include information about how to receive CBC-DT OTA, including channel numbers? I find it rather strange that the channels for all cable and satellite providers are listed but the OTA channel numbers are not listed.

WOW! Thanks for the fast response!

And it's already on the website!

HD Off-air Channels:
Vancouver: 58
Toronto: 20
Ottawa: 25 (coming fall 2006)
Montreal: 20

Looks like I'll have to wait longer to get CBOT-DT and CBOFT-DT.

Wow! That is great. Hopefully that will help spread awareness that you can receive HDTV OTA. To bad it is at the bottom of the list though (I am not complaining though).

That is about the time frame I was expecting. It would be nice if they start broadcasting in time for the Grey Cup; though, I am not going to rush out and buy an HDTV (with ATSC tuner) in anticipation of that.

Recorded The Last Samurai last night, however, there were sound problems as indicated in the following post.

Any comments Marc?

Also, any comments regarding the following posts regarding the schedule?

I was watching the documentary about the Suez Crisis this evening. I noticed it was letterboxed on the regular CBC channel so switched over to the HD channel, thinking the video might be a bit cleaner (mainly b/w news footage). However, I switched back to the regular channel as the horizontal image was cut a bit and some graphics were clipped if they were at the bottom of the screen.

Seems a bit odd that the HD channel can't show the full letterboxed version.

Why would this be? It looked to be 16x9 on the regular channel.

The show was produced with some of the graphics too close to the bottom edge of the picture. That's okay for SD, since there's no cut off when letterboxed. When displayed on a 16x9 CRT parts of the graphics are lost. The producer is aware of the issue.

Harl, I moved your overscan discussion into the Sony forum.

FYI

I'm not sure if it has come up yet, but I'm told CFL blackout rules do not apply to CBC's HD stations.

Any word yet on why CBC-HD showed the first 3 quarters of the football game this weekend in low def? Isn't there staff on hand to deal with problems on the weekend?

CFL games aside, I think CBC's has stepped up its HD gear another notch. This past week, I've been impressed with the amount of HD. And if programing (movies come to mind) isn't HD it's at least DVD quality WS.

There was a problem with the HD satellite feed. It was resolved in the first hour, but the changeover had to be delayed to make a safe transition.

Anyone know when CBC's second HD truck will arrive? And if it will be deployed for NHL hockey?

Just out of curiosity, why is this Saturday's game (July 29 - B.C. at TORONTO) listed as being in HD on CBC's TV CFL schedule (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/football/cfl-on-cbc/schedule.html) but it is not listed in the HD Schedule for July 24 - July 30, 2006 (http://www.cbc.ca/hdtv/schedule/CBC_HD_nextweekj.pdf)?

Also why aren't the first three games in August going to be in HD?

I would humbly suggest that "resolved" should mean resolved for viewers. So it wasn't 'resolved' until 3/4's of the game was over.

Would it be possible to investigate whatever satellite, encoding, and transmission methods and equipment TSN uses? TSN does way more hours of HD coverage and they rarely experience the glitches, foul-ups, and macroblocking that seems to plague almost many live CBC-HD broadcasts.

Perhaps CBC could copy or emulate some of TSN's best practices and reduce how often these problems happen.
