: CBC-HD Official Thread (No Hockey)
roger1818 2008-06-03, 02:31 AM Strange that the actual game was in 4:3 if the pre-game material was in WS. As for the upgrading the remainder of their trucks, it will take time. CBC Mobile (http://www.cbc.radio-canada.ca/mobile/nosmobiles.html) has 10 trucks: 2 HD trucks (Premiere and Encore), 2 digital WS trucks (Laurentien and ChinooK) and at least 2 (or maybe 3) analog WS trucks (Atlantik, Capital and maybe Expo). That leaves 3 or 4 trucks that are probably too old to be worth upgrading so are likely to be gradually replaced.
Don't forget the CBC also has a lot of stations to upgrade to DTV. It is shameful that Calgary and Edmonton are still completely analog (believe it or not but Global might beat CBC there). And then there is Winnipeg, London, Halifax, Windsor and the list goes on and on and on.
The pregame was produced at the Broadcast Centre in 16:9. The contributing satellite trucks were also 16:9. The game coverage was 4:3 because it was the only full production unit available.
Bruno Landry 2008-07-09, 01:31 PM Watching CBMT-DT HD, I see the logo changing place. During live program, the CBC HD logo is at the bottom, perfect position. During recorded program, it is not a the bottom.
That was the fallout of some tests that were going on. I don't have any more details as I'm off this week.
roger1818 2008-07-21, 08:53 PM Marc,
Do you know what CBC's plans are in Ottawa after the analog shutdown in 2011? Will CBOFT-DT apply to revert to channel 9, not only because VHF-HI is preferable to UHF, but also because the channel 9 antenna is the highest one on Ryan Tower (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Tower) at Camp Fortune (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_Fortune)?
Also, am I correct in assuming that CBOT-DT will remain on 25 since VHF-LO is problematic for digital broadcasting? If so, what will happen to the channel 4 antenna? Will it be replaced with a UHF antenna so that you can get better altitude for CBOT-DT (and possibly some of the other UHF stations)?
If you don't know the answers to any of these questions, do you have any guesses? Thanks for your input.
(I am not sure if this post would be better here or in the Ottawa, Outaouais, Eastern Ontario: OTA Station Status (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=69697) forum.)
Information regarding the next steps of HD deployment have not made it to my level yet. Sorry, but your guess is as good as mine.
nfitz 2008-09-07, 03:15 PM Good grief, CBC-HD is frustrating to watch lately. I recorded this mornings election call, to watch the speeches from the 5 leaders. However they cut-off half-way through Dion to show repeats of Coronation Street. How they are allowed to show the speech of one leader, and not the others, seems biased to me! Anyone suggest who I can make a formal complaint to? CRTC? CBSC? Elections Canada?
And yesterday was just as bad. I sat down at 4 pm to watch the Toronto FC game. They were running the overrun of the Blue Jays game - understandable enough, and they said they would air the football after the Blue Jays game finished. And they finally switched over, and rather than airing the entire game, they joined it 3/4 over, after all the goals were scored. There was no later programming that evening that couldn't have been cancelled or replaced. Fortunately, I had started recording CBC Bold just in case, but I'd been waiting to watch it on CBC-HD, as despite the SD broadcast, it still is a little clearer on CBC-HD than CBC Bold.
And that raises the question of just why CBC is still broadcasting all the TFC games in 4:3 SD. Disgraceful in this day and age, at least they use 16:9 SD for all the Impact games from Montreal that they air.
NB Josh 2008-09-07, 03:48 PM CBC did have to air the Paralympics and Show Jumping last night, it wasn't like they were scheduled to air a movie after the Toronto FC game. It appears the reason they scheduled some games on CBC Bold in the first place was in case baseball went to extra inning or just went more than 3 hours.
As for the election, CBC's coverage is just horrible anyway. I always watch CTV's. If you wanted the speeches you should have recorded CPAC. They had coverage all morning. In fact they will probably re-air the speeches later tonight.
wgauci 2008-09-07, 04:13 PM NFITZ,
While you're complaining to CBC for cutting off Dion, i'll be complaining for missing Coronation St! I watched my F1 race live today and this afternoon when we sat down to watch the recording only to have a relaxing afternoon ruined. I actually had to mow the lawn instead!! I can pretty well guarantee that there were more people pissed at missing Cori. than Dion.:D
nfitz 2008-09-07, 04:40 PM CBC did have to air the Paralympics and Show Jumping last night, it wasn't like they were scheduled to air a movie after the Toronto FC game. It appears the reason they scheduled some games on CBC Bold in the first place was in case baseball went to extra inning or just went more than 3 hours. There was one-hour of relatively empty schedule (news and Antiques Road Show) between the TFC game and the Paralympics. The baseball ended at 5:15. That left 105 minutes to air a 97 minute soccer game (with injury time).

In fact they will probably re-air the speeches later tonight.I recorded CBC because they had said on-air the day before they would have coverage of the announcement and opposition reactions. It's a far better picture than CPAC ... or CTV. In retrospect I should have known I couldn't trust CBC, and recorded something else at the same time.
As for Coronation Street. Are you really suggesting that repeats of a foreign soap opera should take precedence over breaking Canadian news? These epsiodes were already broadcast last week, and are also available on CBC's website. Besides, they look months old - didn't they kill off Sarah?
wgauci 2008-09-07, 05:13 PM Ouch nfitz!..
That's just mean posting a spoiler like that! Poor Sarah! The Canadian broadcast is about a year or more behind the British version. Some of us don't watch it during the week and preffer to watch everything at once. However, I was sort of being tongue in cheek about it though. I can accept it's CBC's job to air the Election call and all that, and i'm sure if they could have figured out a way to air Dion and cut off Harper they'd have preffered to do that instead. ;)

That's just mean posting a spoiler like that! Poor Sarah! You did note my words in the edit comment noting I was only joking about Sarah?

Ok. I didn't know exactly what time the baseball finished. They should have did what you are suggesting.
wgauci 2008-09-07, 07:07 PM Yes, I did see the notes, thanks, i'm just having some fun today. You are right though, CBC really has no buisiness cutting like that. An honest effort should be given to providing equal time to all major parties.
JoeSoap 2008-09-08, 11:59 AM How they are allowed to show the speech of one leader, and not the others, seems biased to me!
I can assure you it wasn't a biased decision. For proof, look no further than the commentary complaining about Dion getting tough questions where as Harper got easy questions. If CBC had a bias towards Harper, I don't think you would be hearing them complain on how easy his question were.
sharpnfuzzy 2008-09-11, 10:33 AM Is it just me or does Jeopardy on CBC-HD look terrible? It's very soft and blurry compared to NBC and what used to be on CTV even.
mille 2008-09-11, 10:53 AM For me, it look better
at NBC, WPTZ-DT Plattsburg, it's coming in SD
at CBMT-DT Montreal, it's in HD, full screen..
yesterday night, they had a problem, the picture was in a " zoom " mode, fuzzy for a moment, then, no picture at all, and it come back few seconds later in perfect HD....
sharpnfuzzy 2008-09-11, 11:22 AM hmm, I don't remember it cutting out for me but maybe it was just yesterday's airing.
chieftown 2008-09-17, 10:27 AM just wondering if someone can direct me to a post or thread or if anyone has any idea about when/if CBC will be expanding to an HD OTA signal in the Windsor market (Channel 9).
Thanks!

Check out the thread The CBC comments on their future plans for OTA Digital TV (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=77714). Unfortunately you won't like the results. :(
