: CBC-HD Official Thread (No Hockey)
ardsa 2007-07-01, 04:24 AM I happened to tune into CBC at 3:00 pm pacific (CBUT-DT) on Saturday June 30th. Looking for soccer I was surprised to see that the news was on in HD!
Studio shots were 16:9 HD. Field reports were 4:3 SD action with widescreen blurry sidebars.
The studio shots looked great. Keep up the good work CBC!
Marc, was this a trial today or have some of the weekend newscasts been in HD for a while now?
When might we start seeing the National in HD?
ardsa
It's just starting. We are working towards HD in studio and WS SD in the field. It will be phased in (and out?) as the kinks are worked out.
Neild 2007-07-01, 03:03 PM I PVR'd the ABC West feed so that I can compare with the CBC feed.
I didnt PVR the CBC feed so I cant compare side to side, but it seems to me the ABC feed's picture is a little softer. Anyone else compare?
I did.... I was expecting the CBC picture to be worse as it usually is for most things. But in this case the CBC pic was slightly better. It could have been the difference between how 1080 & 720 are rendered on my set perhaps, but ABC-HD has looked pretty decent on these settings.
Neild 2007-07-01, 03:27 PM Interesting to note that as I was channel flipping I noticed "Office Space" was showing in HD on CBC. It wasn't tagged as such in the program guide however. Sound signal was showing as 5.1 though I didn't check to see if it did contain true 5.1. I would have thought that vintage of movie wouldn't have 5.1??
A lot of older movies that were in stereo, mono or DPL have been reencoded for DD5.1. However, a lot of the programming on CBC is sent as DD5.1, however, it often is not. I believe this is discussed a few posts back.
HiDefBob 2007-07-03, 01:25 AM IMO considering the state of HDTV now, if CBC cannot produce a live sporting event in good quality HDTV then they should not get the contract. TSN HD/CTV and Sportsnet HD should be getting all these contracts. They are unquestionably the best at broadcasting HDTV in Canada. Thank goodness CBC did not get the 2010 Olympic contract!
bwalter 2007-07-04, 06:35 PM I PVR-ed The Simpsons from CBUT-DT recently on my MCE box (forget which day, but the episode is "All's Fair in Oven War") and it seems the audio included the Descriptive Video (with a commentator describing what was happening.) Very annoying. I don't think it's my setup because I hadn't changed anything and from what I can tell, XP MCE 2005 doesn't even support Descriptive Video.
bwalter, Without a date and time I'm not going to hunt through air checks, but I can tell you the audio is correct right now and I have not received any other complaints.
FYI In the ATSC stream PID 1924 is main audio and 1925 is DV. I'm not familiar with MCE so you're on your own. I don't know how you would make the change.
bwalter 2007-07-05, 02:14 PM Marc,
The most recent episode I recorded seems correct as well. I guess it was a one-time thing.
kends 2007-07-05, 05:17 PM I am getting the Descriptive Video track today July 5 @ 5pm on Rogers channel 513! I thought it was a narrative in the episode at first LOL Someone fell asleep and hit the switch I guess.

LOL Me too. I spent the first half of the Simpson's trying to figure out what they were spoofing with the narration. Then, about 1 min. into Arrested Development, CBCHD disappeared from my guide!?!
Boavista 2007-07-05, 07:57 PM Yea CBCHD-East had disappeard from bell...
I went to watch The soccer game in HD and its gone.. what is going on
wptbay 2007-07-05, 11:14 PM The same thing happened to me. I tried to locate CBC-HD just before the soccer game was to start & I couldn't find it. I assumed it was my 9200 so I unplugged it & disconnected the cables for an hour or so as I got sidetracked. Whe I set it back up the channel had returned. I now suspect I went through that exercise for nothing.
That was a BEV issue, not CBC.

I had another look at the DV issue. DV shows need to be upconverted differently than stereo shows, otherwise DV on SD audio 3 becomes the center channel in HD. Some episodes of The Simpsons have been arriving with DV, but they were not upconverted correctly. It shouldn't be a problem anymore.
Sorry for doubting you bwalter! ;) Thanks for the feedback everyone.
Last night during the 'Minority Report' there was some picture glitching and distortion on cbut-tv/dt, that seemed to be coming from the very source, but only lasted for less then a minute. Occured at 21.33 h PT/local.
The CBUT server had a problem. Maintenance are looking into it.
ardsa 2007-07-16, 08:55 PM Marc,
Any update on the SD widescreen upconversion problems on CBUT-DT? The SD closed captioning is still visible for these programs.
By the way, the new smaller CBC bug is a nice improvement over the larger one introduced a few months ago!
Which program(s) had the lines? I've checked both the 4:3 and 16:9 upconverters. They are working correctly.

The 5:30 pm Arrested Development yesterday. Would you like me to do a screen capture next time I see it happen?
