The new BUG is at least 3 times bigger than the old one!

the other problem is that it cuts across the pillarbox and the picture on 4:3 programs, so it looks kinda bad getting split in the middle by a black bar.

If they are going to use that bug, they should only be using it when HD content is being shown. Just show the regular cbc logo (no hd) on 4:3 programing

They have reduce the bug.

I HATE the new bug!!!

First of all, "HD" is nothing new. Why are they doing like ABC and NBC and smearing huge "HD" letters on it? Do you still see broadcasters bragging about being "IN COLOR"?

Second, the placement is horrible. Many of us use ATSC tuners to downconvert the HD feed to get a good picture on standard TVs, with the bug where it is now half of it is chopped off the screen. Either move it in the 4:3 zone or keep it only in the 16:9 zone. Don't put it in between!

Yes, at the second look the HD letters looked a little large, although the CBC-bug was the same size as before, so the 'HD' letters just went along with it. It is only at SD programme, that I thought it did not look so nice, since the letter 'H' was just across the middle of 'SD border'. Then I thought - would be ok to use the new logo only at HD content, and the old one (that stood in the black side area) for the rest (SD 4:3).
{It reminded me at when Global sold its tv station (ckvu) to citytv and bought BCTV, then in the beginning, the CKVU used a realy large Citytv logo (probably for promotional purposes) but later made it smaller, the way it is now.}
Then yesterday, they still used the new one (big one) on 'Arrested Development' and after that, they put a same new but smaller watermark for 'Canada Now'. The new smaller logo looks great, and it just fits right for either HD or SD.
I still don't think the big logo is too large to use for HD content, and I don't agree with 'HD is nothing new' remark. When I first saw the new big logo, I thought: This is going to be great for CBC HD promotion (which is currently non-existant, you have to dig deep on CBC web site to find anything about their HD content, and there is no promotional clips for HD-stuff or the CBC-HD channel on their programme at all). At the rate of HD penetration in Canada (maybe 10% or so), this will promote it better to general public browsing at 'London Drugs' and 'Futureshop' and noticing right away that 'CBChd is something very different, not just a copy of SD of some sort' (I really dislike that on CTVhd, where there is regular CTV logo on SD programme - just an upconverted SD picture with the logo in it). HD is nothing new to us here, but unfortunately, to majority of Canadians, it still is, so I still think they should use the large watermark version for HD content.

I believe 'Arrested Development' is not HD, but up converted SD. Could the big bug be an artifact of up converting SD?

Here's a heretical thought... Why not dispense with the "bug" entirely? OK, show it for a couple of seconds at the beginning of the show or after a commercial break. I'm frankly tired of all the crap superimposed on the screen these days. This includes the network logos, the superimposed promos for other shows (Global is really bad for this!), and the score / time display in sport events. What's wrong with a "clean" display?

I really noticed this when viewing the old hockey games the CBC broadcasts on Sunday nights. No logo, no score display, just pure unencumbered action. That's the way it should be!

The show that aired on sunday night at 02.30 h "The Greatest Canadian" was marked on the PDF-sheet as HD, but I noticed it had not so good picture quality.
It also looked to me like it was a zoom-in from the CBC's SD feed again. I noticed that when the show logo (occationaly appering) in the lower left corner was cropped off on the HD channel, while it could be seen whole on SD channel (letterboxed).

speaking of AD, has anyone noticed they have major sync problems on their broadcasts recently? the same episodes did not have the problems on earlier runs.

I noticed that the ratings/classification logo (the '14+' or 'PG', not sure what it's called) doesn't show up on cbut-dt while it does on cbut-tv.
Should this be some automatic triggering like the watermark thing?
I'm not sure about on 4:3 programme, but I noticed this issue on a HD movie last week, again yesterday on HD movie (chocolat) and now again on WS "A.I.".

This was a nice surprise. Eventhough I knew this movie was shown in 4:3 last year and is in SD again, I prepared to record it anyways. However, to my big and nice surprise, it started in HD!
I am now happy I was ready for recording.
CBC, well done!
I am assuming that they repurchased this movie (in HD) maybe for less money as it was already shown (premiered on tv in Canada) last year, in order to simulcast with ABC HD too. Surely CBC will try to check the ratings on monday to see if it payed-off, but unfortunately, in Canada for the most part HDTV viewing is not measured and not included in ratings, as far as I know.
I noticed the schedule for next saturday indicates 'Finding Nemo' on both ABC and CBC. Maybe we are in for another good surprise and they will do the same with Nemo too (I remember it was shown in 4:3 last year).
One thing I found very interesting during the tonight's movie was very different scene times on CBC and on CBC-HD. In the first scene, signal on cable (analog) was whole 20 seconds behind the OTA signal (HD). After second block of commercials, I think, OTA signal was over 5 minutes behind the cable. Then I realised the movie was cut for commercials completely differently than the SD version (on cable). They must have used last year's version for SD signal. Very interesting to see this unusual thing.
Also, the 'PG' logo has started showing up now properly.
I just hope it was indicated that it would be in HD, anywhere on CBC website, even with a one-day notice.

What I noticed about the Pirates was that their was no sound coming out of the surround channels.Had to switch to DPL 2 and let the receiver do it.WKBW-dt also only has 2 channel sound so I thought CBC would have 5.1 working since they are sending the 5.1 but with nothing in surround.

Pirates was stereo. We tried to get the 5.1 version, but ran into some technical issues with delivery. The coding is 5.1 even for stereo program as mentioned here (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=464126&postcount=254). It wasn't advertised as HD because it was going to be too close to call.

How about "Finding Nemo" this weekend? SD upconvert, or HD with 5.1? Or, too close to call?

Thanks.

Marc, just as an FYI, I just watched The Nature of Things, which I recorded on Sunday (17th), however, the last segment was shown "postage stamped" (black bars all around) and the audio was improperly encoded DD5.1 (audio out the LF & RF only)

The previous segments were all proper fullscreen (16:9) HD and proper DD5.1. Don't know why this would happen to just the last segment...

Working on it.

57, The last segment did not air correctly due to an playlist editing error. It's a manual task that should be automated later this year.

I just checked my recording of Nature of Things, last segment looks ok. It was probably on CBC Toronto, but on CBC Vancouver all was ok.

Also, on Sunday I saw a promo clip for a movie 'Wimbledon' saying 'next saturday'. I knew Nemo was scheduled for saturday and went to recheck the schedule, which stated Nemo on saturday, Wimbledon on sunday. Then I thought - I must have not seen it well (especially since those two days look so similar in English). A few minutes ago I saw that promo clip for Wimbledon again, and indeed it does say 'on saturday'. Is this a mistake? (this promo clip has been airing for days now).
I wonder what ever happened with the new 'big' watermark that kept appearing instead of the 'PG' logo. Now it seems completely gone.

The promo for Wimbledon was wrong. It has been pulled. Nemo is on Saturday. Wimbledon is on Sunday.
There have been a fair number of changes going on with graphics, but I haven't been involved so I don't know the details.

As previously discussed in here, the new HD bug is one of those changes. I hope CBC switches back. I had no problem with the old one (if one has to be used at all...). The new one is HUge, and very distracting. It's bad enough on my TV, I can't imagine how annoying it would be on a 60" screen.
