CBC HD out of Toronto has been fine all night here in Cogecoland.

Bell & Rogers are OK. It's a CBCHD and SRCHD Montreal or Videotron problem! I also have some friends over!! it's HORRIBLE!!!!!

this is pointing to a blackout of OTA signals for NHL games. i bet none of the playoff games will be seen on OTA. this exact same thing happened last week aswell with the only HD vancouver game this year being black until right after the game ended. with the HD truck here aswell.

As you can see, reports from Montreal and Vancouver DHCers say that CBC HD went black OTA shortly after the start of the Montreal/Toronto NHL game, and it affected Videotron customers too. Its not a conspiracy to blackout anyone, so discussing that is off topic.

FYI, both COBT-DT and CBOFT-DT were dark in Ottawa OTA tonight, starting a few minutes after the beginning of first period of the Leafs-Habs game and still going on as of now (1:15 EDT).
The analog CBOT and CBOFT are still broadcasting as usual.

Is it just me or is anyone else out there completely fed up with the size of the bug on CBC HDTV Hockey Night in Canada. Very distracting in the uppper left hand corner of the screen and about 3 times bigger than it needs to be.
Me too. See http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=57623

I say put a small logo in the bottom right, and leave it at that. Point a second cam at the scoreboard and put that image on a subchannel fercryinoutloud. Then the scoreboard freaks can watch the scoreboard, and hockey freaks can watch hockey.

Can anyone from CBC explain this? The playoffs are just around the corner and if this is what we can expect I might have to order Shaw's HD package. (I am currently OTA)

Can anyone report on Shaw's CDC HD Saturday night?

HD Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver crashed last night. Toronto eventually went down too. I know what went down, but not why. You can be sure we will be following up with manufacturer immediately. The outage has nothing to do with blackout rules.

Has the bug changed lately? (I'm a fair weather fan. ;))

It has been around a long time and predates HD. I suspect its size is based on comfortable viewing on a SD television. As things are configured, you can't have one size for each format.

I'm sure that CBC will change is scoreboard soon.

Marc, what time did Toronto go down? Because I watched the entire TOR/MTL game and most of the CGY/EDM game both OTA HD.

I think that's the problem. It was just transported over from SD.
As things are configured, you can't have one size for each format.
No, that's not feasible, but it would be nice to have it optimized for HD, and usable for SD.

can i ask why the only true HD game of the year on CBC in Vancouver on the 31st of March VAN/CALgame, had the exact same issue? just as the game was starting it blacked out with a full signal on OTA? the HD truck from the east was here in town aswell, which made it even more annoying. i watched the game on Shaw's HD channel but lets face it, it simply isn't OTA quality. and then the same thing happens last night too. i thought Shaw used the OTA source for there channel and just compressed it but i see that cant be true now.

March 31 was a different issue. The microwave link to Mount Seymour was being moved due to some construction work in the area. The move took much longer than planned. Shaw was given a local fibre feed to cover the outage.

Next season? Its playoff time Beefgravy! The time is now!

Marc, can you be more specific as to the cause of the problem? Can you say which piece of equipment was responsible?

My guess is you won't say who the manufacturer is!

The English and French HD stations are linked by a number of MPEG multiplexers and rebranders. This is done to insert PSIP data and to make the most efficient use of fibre optic circuits. Saturday night, a problem developed which caused many of these devices to become unstable.

This week's CBC HD schedule contains very little HD. I'm assuming that the CBC didn't know when the games were going to be on, therefore left them off the listing?

That must be the case. Apparently the following games will be in HD:

Wednesday, Apr. 11
PIT vs OTT [g1] 7 pm
DAL vs VAN [g1] 10 pm

Thursday, Apr. 12
CGY vs DET [g1] 7 pm
Friday, Apr. 13
DAL vs VAN [g2] 9 pm
Saturday, Apr. 14
PIT vs OTT [g2] 3 pm
Sunday, Apr. 15
CGY vs DET [g2] 1 pm
OTT vs PIT [g3] 6 pm

That is a minimum of 21 hours of HD. Other games may be in WS. I am not sure.
