Everyone gets 1080i.

jerome, the idea, driven by viewers, is that if an HD game is available it should air on the HD transmitters. More HD games will be available soon when the second HD truck hits the road. It will probably be ready for the playoffs.

Just to clarify what Marc is saying, CBOT-DT is capable of showing the local game in unconverted SD, but they choose to show the national game in HD instead. There are two reasons for this:

Unconverted SD (even if WS) isn't significantly better than SD.
It gives local viewers the choice between two games.

If you think the local game should be shown on CBOT-DT, my suggestion would be to complain to CBC's audience relations (http://www.cbc.ca/contact/index.jsp). If enough people complain, they might change their policy.

I am curious if the situation was reversed and for some reason the Ottawa game was in HD and the Toronto game was in SD (fat chance I know, but play with me here), if CBLT-DT would show the Ottawa game. I suspect not. If they did, Don Cherry would freak and it would probably make front-page news on all the Toronto papers. ;)

What is unconverted?

Whoops! I meant upconverted (or should that be up-converted?). One problem with using a spell-checker is it doesn't always have the words you want in the dictionary.

Thanks for the clarification Marc, & I agree with you roger1818, the reverse situation would never happen :-(
I guess there are enough Leafs fans in Ottawa that the current state of things just work out for most people (and enough people get CBC in analog)

Anyway, I fired up a comment through CBC's website, and I'll wait patiently that the Sens game are broadcasted in HD. In the meantime, I'll have to pick up a decent antenna to catch the games in analog.

Thanks everyone,
J

It's 1PM on Sunday and still no HD schedule for the upcoming week on the website. Marc, any chance this could go up a bit earlier than "at the last minute"?

Thanks

I just checked now (Monday morning). It is there, but I can't say when it was posted. I passed on your comment anyway.

So far, the HD hockey games were shown in SD during the compress replays early Sunday morning. Those games will be replayed in HD beginning this week.

Also, the HD replay will be shown on the Eastern (Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa) HD stations at noon on Sunday. This is in addition to the early morning play. SD stations will have regular programming at this time, not hockey.

Marc: I just got around to viewing it, but on Sunday night at Midnight, CBC showed "The Danish Poet" on Canadian Reflections. An excellent short that won an Oscar.

It was widescreen, but shown "windowboxed" probably because the short that followed was 4:3 on Reflections. Thanks again.

I haven't see it, but you assumption is probably correct. During on air playback we do not switch aspect ratios within a program. Each show is tagged for a single setting for the entire program.

The new truck is at the Toronto Broadcast Centre for final testing and tweaking. It will be on the road shortly.

That is great news Marc! Do you know what type of programming it will be used for? NHL playoffs I would assume.

Now, when is that 3rd truck coming? :p

Great news about Encore! Should some of the new equipment help improve the PQ issues that some people complain about on here?

Stoakley: Any chance of getting Premier in Edmonton in time for the game against Nashville on the 24th? It isn't listed as being in HD in the HNIC Broadcast Schedule (http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/hnic/tvschedule.html). I assume Encore will be used for the games in Toronto on March 31 and April 7 (heaven forbid a Leafs game not be shown in HD. ;) Lets just hope they once again don't make the playoffs so that Encore can come to Ottawa in round 1 :p).

Hi Roger,

Not sure... the mobile division changes its mind all the time. Besides, if they can get a rental charge on the truck over showing a west game in HD, knowing how that place works it would probably take the rental :)

Not sure about the arguments and complaints about the gear. I do know they've changed some of the camera hardware, but I'll find out a lot more tomorrow when I'm doing some shakedows.

Cheers

Radio-Canada will use one of the two HD Mobile on March 26 to broadcast Election night in Quebec in HD.

Thanks Bruno. I didn't think about that option. I assume that will be shown on CBOFT-DT, CBFT-DT and CBVT-DT. Will CBOT-DT, CBMT-DT, CBLT-DT, CBUT-DT all show HNIC (I assume CBMT-TV will show the election in English)?

Marc,

What's the status on the glitch I reported on coming back from SD comercials to WS/HD content on CBUT-DT? I guess they haven't managed to track it down yet because still seem to be seeing the problem.

Hey all,

Just got back from checking out the new mobile. All I can say is that it sure looks pretty :) It's so nice to be in a mobile that's never been used before.

I'm looking forward to my first gig with it.

Cheers!
