Thanks 57.

They haven't updated their information to include the TGC switch. I guess the people with sports pack will be getting TGC for no extra charge.

I really wish the MeTV channels could be purchased individually.

They can't offer analog channels as pick and choose. You have to have basic cable in order to get digital.

Customer choice Package refers to the Pick and Pay packages that you can create your self of individual channels. They can be in groups of 5, 10,15 or 30 channels or individually for $2.49.

Customer Choice package prices can be found here:

They can't offer analog channels as pick and choose...Will this change when they go all-digital? Isn't this supposed to happen in a couple years - or even earlier? I'm curious - what is different about the way they broadcast SPACE vs Book TV, or even TGC? Is SPACE (part of MeTV) still analog even though I'm getting it on 281? I can't actually see any quality difference between a channel that has both a higher and a lower number on the box.

The actual channel numbers on the box are meaningless. Under traditional analog cable, the channel number referred to a specific frequency to tune to.

With the digital cable boxes, any channel can be pointed / mapped to any frequency. So when you see channels appearing with multiple numbers (i.e. Space on 50 and 281), the actual channel is only coming down the pipe one time on a certain frequency, and just being pointed to twice.

In most areas where Rogers has updated their infrastructure, all channels now come in digitally, including 2-72. In some cases, they still make the analog versions of the stations available in the 800+ range. Try looking at 50 vs. 850... that's where you'll likely notice a difference.

Analog "tier" channels (ie. MeTV, etc) have complex regulatory rules. You may notice Bell doesn't offer any of these channels stand-alone either. They do offer them in five (unbreakable) theme paks which add up to the same as Rogers "Ultimate" -- Much Music through Outdoor Life (Toronto anyway). They are even priced essentially the same -- about $20 for the set of about 30 channels.

I would be willing to pay more for the channels I want and dump those I don't. A&E, CNN, Showcase, History, Life ... and even these don't get much of a workout anymore now that I have basicaly switched to HDTV.

I would like SPACE but it's not worth the fee just to watch 20 episodes of Battlestar Galactica. I can get it by other means like DVD. Of the myriad channels that I have, I probably only watch half a dozen. Everything from the US is either on Global or CTV. I've seen the cycle on OLN. Most everything now is just repeating itself.

That's $16x12 months. Buying the season of BSG on DVD would be $50 or so. Or I could rent it: $5 per 4-episodes, so $20 total - and I always have tons of coupons. Either way, it's a lot cheaper. MeTV is not feasible if all you care about is one show on one station. I never watch the other channels, and of course golf will be gone.

And yes, you don't have to subscribe to MeTV if you have digital. It's an option. So is the Plus (TSN, CNN, A&E, etc). You can just have basic digital (about 70 channels), and then add-on specialty channels.

Someone at Rogers told me that as an existing subscriber of the golf channel and a subscriber of digital cable, I could receive the Golf Channel in the digital tier for free because of the inconvenience of the move. Anyone else hear this?

Anyone else hear this? You mean that anyone with MeTV and digital automatically gets the Golf Channel when it changes to a specialty channel?

What's odd about this is that golf fans probably already have MeTV in order to get TGC. So that would mean that everyone with digital would get it for free when it changes. Non-digital people would have to switch to digital and THEN pay extra for TGC. You'd think they'd offer TGC for free as an incentive to get people to switch to digital.

A Rogers rep. told my mother (who doesn't have digital but has MeTV) that if she switched to digital she'd get TGC at no extra charge, but who knows. She also told my mother that TGC were forcing Rogers to move the channel to specialty!

The golf channel has very very low rating in canada. The golf channel is not a bonous for people to get digital.By that i mean people are not going to get digital just due to the golf channel. They need to offer the nhlnetwork now that would get people to make the move.

They also told my dad that he would receive golf for free if he upgraded to digital. I gave them a call myself to confirm and was told that this was not the case.

I always wonder if they have CSR meetings where they give 3 different stories to 3 different groups of CSRs.

The CSR I was dealing with then tried to tell me that Golf was forcing Rogers to move the channel. Well, after I called her on it she wasn't as happy to be helping me even though I was awfully nice about it.

Oh, and she initially thought I was talking about the Gol channel (soccer) and didn't clue in when I was asking about the move from analog to digital specialty. Good thing I knew that Gol was different than Golf otherwise her statement of 1 year free preview would have been completely wrong (although I don't necessarily blame her for this mistake).

That's what's confusing. If, according to poster above, people with digital and MeTV will get TGC automatically; and if as you say people without digital are not going to get it just for TGC - then who is going to be paying the $2.49? Anybody? Their move only makes sense if they make the golf fans pay the extra $2.49. I mean, you don't put it on specialty and then give it for free. Right now, they can't even get their web address correct!

I don't normally quote myself, but I just received clarification from my Rogers source that it will be free for 1 year only.

There is also a possibility that exsiting Golf Channel subscribers that don't subscribe to digital will get a free terminal for 1 year also.

So that means that absolutely nobody will have to pay the $2.49 for one year? That sounds good; although I don't know why they wouldn't just bother leaving it on MeTV. It's a bit like the NFL Network, which we are still getting free.

For the second part - do you mean that anybody with analog MeTV can just ask and get a free digital terminal so they can get TGC? They would still have to pay the digital fee I imagine. Right now, nobody is a TGC subscriber. You just get it through MeTV, which I imagine is a lot of customers. It sounds overall like it's more trouble for Rogers than just leaving it.

I wonder if I can still drop MeTV and still get TGC. Without it, I don't need MeTV as it's a waste of about $15 per month.

Very simple they wanted to get it on to the digital teir.As with the digital terminal there are two different stories making the rounds.

1)Free digital terminal this only applies to metv customers and there are some other requirments.

2)Buy the basic digital terminal and get so much in credit.
