I assume your monitor is "HD ready" meaning it has the right inputs (HDMI and/or components) so it will play a 720 feed just fine and not a whole lot different than anything you'd buy today. If your monitor is a good one, stick with it for a tech-generation.
The audio can be fed to an A/V receiver and 2 or 3 good loudspeakers (loads of them on Craigslist but check the connectors) or a $150 home-theatre-in-a-box (with awful loudspeakers).
There are lots of satellite receivers out there second hand. You need one that handles HD (which has been around for quite a while). Perhaps somebody else on another forum can tell you if you have to have a membership smart-card inserted into the slot for the unit to work. Mine had some kind of card in it but I never paid any subscription to DirectTV (nor did I receive satellite signals).
It's a crazy world out there with changing connectors. Sure looks like HDMI is going to be the popular mode but units even two years old may not do the secret handshake signals cooperatively. No inherent difference in quality between HDMI and component or for sound among optical, "coax," and HDMI for digital sound.

So I was able to get my hands on a ATSC tuner
Tuner: Coolsat 8000HD outputs to 1080i
Location: Almost facing the CN Tower, 2 KM of it.
Here's the channels I get:
I receive the following channels:
2.1 NBC WGRZ
2.2 NBC-Sport WGRZ-US
2.3 RTV WGRZ-RT
4.1 CBS WIVB-HD
5.1 CBC CBLT
7.1 ABC WKBW – Tuner picks it up but no picture
8.1 CBS WROC – not detected
9.1 CTV CFTO
11.1 E! CHCH
17.1 PBS WNED - pixelated
17.2 PBS WNED - pixelated
17.3 PBS WNED - pixelated
23.1 The CW WNLO
25.1 CBC-F CBLFT
26.1 TCT WNYB
26.2 TCT WNYB
29.1 FOX WUTV
29.2 FOX WUTV
36.1 CTS CITS
41.1 Global CIII
44.1 OMNI OMNI2
49.1 MYTV WNYO – had a clear signal, but gone
49.2 MYTV WNYO – “ “
57.1 CITY-TV CITY – had city, but its gone now..the tuner won't even pick it up
64.1 OMNI OMNI
66.1 SUN-TV CKXT
So I don't know what I did to lose City-TV and I was watching 49 for a good while before it went. I remember moving some stuff around the balcony, but I didn't even touch the antenna.
Do you guys think a preamp will help? Also, will it make a difference if I mounted the Antenna horizontally versus vertically? Thanks again!

I'm a bit closer to the tower than you, but I have a stable tuning of CITY.
I'm up and down for the Buffalo stations, though. I get them all most of the time, but they'll drop out every little while. It was stable last night.
I have my antenna pointing towards the NBC tower, since it seems it's the least stable channel.

Spent the last day or so reading through a lot of the forum - feels good to be surrounded by so many experts :)
I'm in an apartment building, on the 17th floor, facing south. There are a bunch of buildings right around mine, but I can see the top of the CN Tower.
Now, am I in good range to get a pretty good OTA set-up? I read a lot of people talking about being too close to the tower - am I in danger of that, and if so is there any way around it?
And lots of people seem to be using Channel Master's 4221. From reading posts around here, I know that location is the key so is an antenna like that one worth getting?
2009-08-14, 12:05 PM
travy, you are in a great location for CN Tower signals given that you can see the top of the tower. Buffalo and Hamilton might be difficult due to surrounding buildings, but hopefully not.
See Posts #102 and 103 :) For more posts from nearby locations use the Search This Thread tool to the upper right beside Thread Tools and put in nearby street names as search terms.

This morning, I was able to pick up 21 with some distortion and 51 & 57 with no picture.
Does City broadcast from the CN Tower? My antenna is mounted by a concrete pillar to the left of it but its not really behind it. I'm going to try to place the antenna horizontally to hopefully get a better range. I'll post my results.
2009-08-14, 12:38 PM
zeeden, that antenna is not designed to work sideways. It has to remain in the up-and-down position. See Post #21 in the OTA FAQ for an explanation.
2009-08-14, 12:41 PM
Really? Because I was able to mount it sideways on the satellite arm. Haha
2009-08-14, 12:46 PM
If you're antenna has been sideways all this time then you have been thwarting some or all of its performance!
Folks, be sure to read through the OTA FAQ so that we can help you better with your reception. :)
2009-08-14, 12:47 PM
No it hasn't been sideways. I tried it sideways when I was trying to pick up some analog channels, but changed it when I picked up the ATSC tuner. :D
2009-08-14, 12:51 PM
Good, that's an experiment that thankfully ended. ;)
BTW CITY is indeed coming from the CN Tower.
2009-08-14, 01:04 PM
Stampeder, I have clear view of the CN Tower too...
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can pick up CITY-TV in Toronto? Any ideas why I can't?
I am picking up every station transmitting in Toronto but CITY :(
2009-08-14, 01:11 PM
Do you have a signal meter on your ATSC tuner? If so, please post the levels you are seeing on all the DTV stations coming from the CN Tower so we can see if CITY-DT is overloading where you are.
2009-08-14, 06:15 PM
stampeder, not too sure which Toronto channels are on the CN tower, but here are my results for the Canadian channels
5.1 CBC CBLT - 90%
9.1 CTV CFTO - 90%
11.1 E! CHCH - 75%
41.1 Global CIII - 85-90%
44.1 OMNI OMNI2 - 85-90%
57.1 CITY-TV CITY - ????????????????
64.1 OMNI OMNI - 85-90%
66.1 SUN-TV CKXT - 90%
2009-08-14, 06:39 PM
You can look up the Toronto station locations in the Industry Canada database to see which ones are up on the CN Tower:
About the CITY-DT reading, you put a bunch of question marks. What exactly did the signal meter say?
2009-08-14, 07:15 PM
I have a CM4228HD chimney mounted so that it's 6 feet above the roof of our 3 story home. The antenna is pointed directly at PBS.
Overall we're quite happy. I wish we could pull in 49 and 11, but they don't even register. Is anyone getting 49 from downtown Toronto? I think it is very low power.
2009-08-14, 07:36 PM
When I tune into CITY -57 signal displays at 80 then drops to 60 then it says "channel information has been changed. Please try again and search or check your dish settings." It's a coolsat 8000hd satellite/dtv receiver.
2009-08-14, 07:37 PM
The 4228HD falls off in performance in high UHF- hence WNYO RF 49.1 will be difficult. It's nice to see you are getting FOX (14.1 RF) and ION (23.1 RF) - they are difficult to get.
2009-08-15, 08:24 AM
Actually ION is intermittent. When I have it, it's pretty strong. When I don't, it's 0 signal. Seems like there's no in between. Coming from cable, OTA is quite a strange beast!
Is reception noticeably better or more consistent in the non-summer months?
