Hopefully he will post the reason why ?

From my location and north of the gta both are at equally strong signals.

From the West (Bloor and 427) both are 10 bars through 3 layers of shingles using a 4221.

Well I'm happy to report from my condo-townhouse, with direct east view (Partial CN tower) I'm able to get the folllowing with a Gemini/Wade 4 bay 1483 antenna, very small and not noticible on the balcony.

5-1 CBC HD
9-1 CTV HD
23-1 WIVB HD
23-2 RADAR
23-3 WNLO-SD
25-1 CBLFT-D (French CBC HD)
43-1 WNED-HD
43-2 WNED-SD
43-3 WNED-Th
44-1 OMNI 2
57-1 CITY HD
64-1 OMNI 1
66-1 CKXT SUNTV HD

I'm very confused how I'm getting any buffalo stations being that my antenna is 2 inches from a brick wall at the back of my house (Meaning the south is three interior walls and two brick walls away)? Antenna pointing directly east, side of antenna pointing toward the wall....Strange but happy!

P.S. WHen is Global going HD OTA?

he, he, he, if Global has it's way it will be 11:59:59 PM 09/June/2008 and not a second earlier. But as 026163 has implied, no one is holding their breath, or planning a party for that matter.

Why, does it cost more money?

Suffice it to say from Global's recent CRTC submission that they don't see any reason to want to broadcast in ATSC any time soon :

We won't get into the topic of Global in this thread. Lets go back to only Reception info in this thread.

Hi everyone, I'm a first time poster! I just stumbled upon this site a couple of weeks ago, but now I'm fully involved. Samsung SIR-T451 (from Ebay), CM4228 on a chimney mount about 4 feet above my roofline (Toronto, west end, Islington south of 401). So far I am enjoying these channels;

2.1, 2.2 (NBC)
4.1, 4.2, 4.3 (CBS)
5.1 (CBC)
7.1, 7.2 (ABC)
23.1, 23.2, 23.3 (CBS)
25.1 (CBLFT)
29.1, 29.2 (FOX)
40.1 (CTV)
43.1, 43.2, 43.3 (WNED)
44.1 (OMNI2)
57.1 (CITY)
64.1 (OMNI1)
66.1 (CKXT)

Now, here is the strange part. Before I mounted my CM4228, I used a Zenith Silver Sensor indoor antenna. I didn't get ABC, NBC, or FOX, but I got the rest with great results. Now, I have problems getting Omni 1, CKXT, and CTV without pixelation. They all show between 5-6 bars on the signal strength meter, while all the other channels show 10 bars (full). Do you think these signals are just so strong they are overloading the tuner? I added a splitter yesterday so that I could run RG6 into my basement as well, and also to see if the loss in signal strength would make things better, but no change. Does the second cable from the splitter have to be plugged into a working tuner in order to reduce the signal strength on the other cable, or is it enough just to plug a cable into the splitter? Since I only have one tuner at the moment, only one of the splitter's outputs is actually connected to a component, the other is just cable. You guys have been an absolute wealth of information, so I'm asking for some guidance here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tony

Hi Tony welcome to the digital board.

Question are you using any kind of preamp or booster if so remove it and test ?

As you say if you are 4' above your roofline you should have decent elevation.

My suggestion would be to slightly move your antenna more east towards the Cn tower.

From your channel list you receiving Fox at 10 bars.

This is what I would do put your Samsung on the Fox and on the signal strength meter and then have someone watch the signal while you swing the antenna east.

Have Fox drop to 8 bar and then, check the signal on Ctv and the other stations you are having problems with.

Good luck.

unzio, you actually don't even need the cable to take away strength from the signal. By routing through a splitter it automatically divides up your signal, whether anything is plugged in to the extra outlets or not.

i don't think overload is your problem though actually. If you were to get overload, it would likely be on 20-1 CBC-HD. I myself have problems with 66-1 and 64-1 because of their high frequencies, they don't go well with my system. Perhaps it's the same for you. But i can't explain your reception of CFTO, which should be much better than that.

also, :D good job posting your channels properly, with the subchannels of each station all on the same line. I hate it when people do each subchannel as completely different station, as if it's going to have it's own results and signal strength.

Hi Tony, and welcome here! I don't think you have an overload problem - I suspect it is just an aiming issue but of course there are others here in this forum who know your location much better than I do.

Gents, once again you amaze me with your quick replies!

I'm glad you think that overload is not the issue, it makes me feel safer! Yaamon, I'm using no preamp, just about 50' of RG6 from the antenna to the tuner. As for aiming the antenna, it is aimed towards Buffalo right now. I figured I should be able to get the Toronto stations easily because I'm only approximately 15km from the CN tower, so I aimed the antenna to help me get the American stations. I'll try to point it a little more to the CN tower, but I don't want to give up my Buffalo reception for what is basically 2 channels I will watch very little. I guess tweaking is the next step. Or, just plug my ZSS back in whenever I need it! I would give up my cable forever if I could just get TSN, Sportsnet and Speed OTA!

Tony just move your antenna slightly more east till Fox drop to a steady 8.

That's still more than enough signal.

just purchased a 4228 from yaamon and it's working great..
got most of the buffalo channels and all the toronto local channels..

mounted the 4228 with a 12 foot pole, with chimney straps.. a great test over the weekend since it was very windy and everything is still mounted up on top of my chinmey =)..

akide nice job, ;) did you push the rg6 cable into the pole and down out at the bottom. :D

What channels are you missing from Buffalo ?

I'm located at DVP and York Mills, on the west side of the dvp.. so we got lots of trees in the area =(

ya i pushed the cable down the pole and out the bottom.

i'm missing WGRZ (NBC)

Oh yea I forgot that you mentioned the trees:(

Pretty good and you guys were not bothered by the height.

If your Fox is strong maybe you cna try and move the antenna slighty more east for Nbc although without seeing the trees myself, you may already have the antenna already aimed as best as you can get it.

Been doing lots of reading through the forums here. I just picked up a CM 4221 from Yaamon yesterday. I am in the area bordered by Lawerence, DVP, Ellesmere and Vic Park. Have not had time to mount it on the roof yet but tried it out yesterday on a tripod and 10' pole in my backyard. There is a tree in the yard two houses south about double the height of the current location and my house is between the antenna and CN tower to the SW.

Here is what I am able to pick up pointed about 180 deg
4-1 CBS HD, 4-2 Radar, 4-3 CW SD 76
5-1 CBC HD 92
7-1 ABC HD, 7-2 WNGS SD 70
9-1 CTV HD 78
23-1 CBS HD, 23-2 Radar SD, 23-3 CW SD 95
25-1 CBC Fr HD 78
29-1 FOX HD, 29-2 fox SD 70 (only getting the HD version SD is all black)
43-1 PSB HD, 43-2 PBS SD, 43-3 PBS Th 56, 43-4 PBS SD 56
44-1 OMNI2 HD 78
57-1 City HD 67
64-1 OMNI1 HD 67

I think the two main ones I am missing are NBC 2-1 and SUN TV 66-1. Hopefully I will pick these up once I move the 4221 higher.

I like the way akide put his cable down through the pole so I will try the same looks much cleaner.

Yaamon recomended I can just use a sat dish arm screwed to the roof and stick the 1 1/4 pipe right in the arm.

What size screws would be best to go into the roof? I have some 1 3/4" wood screws wondering if that is deep enough? or should I use longer at least for the two middle screws that go into the beam?

Should I mount it right at the roof peak so the top two screws have something behind them as well?

The neighbours house to the south is about 4 or 5 feet higher then mine and will be about 40 - 50' south of where I plan to mount the antenna. There are three other houses the same height beyond that then is slopes down toward the lake and I do not see any buildings blocking the south view beyond that. Would cutting the 10 foot pole down to about 6' be good? I am nervous about putting too much stress on my roof.

Shmizer very good results for being on the ground with a 10' pole.

Once you get the antenna up higher you will have much better results. Line up for Nbc and Fox once you get those two in everthing should be fine.

I have used before a full 10' pole with the 4221 antenna.

Normally like I said if you find the truss and two of the screw goes into the center of the J arm mount and you keep the length of the pole 5' you wont have a problem.

This is what I use should be able to go to Home Depot and get them.

The other 4 screws on the outside of the mount will be more than enough. I used lag type bolts for the truss and roof.

Remember to use roof/sealant/tar on the mount and the threads of the screwthere is not much wind load the the 4221.

Thanks Yaamon. I was pretty happy with the results, from the ground. If I move more towards the CN tower I get much stronger signals from those but lost half the Buffalo stations so I think 180 is about perfect as you recommended. There is a pretty clear path to the CN from my roof, just the top of one tree about 50 yards away. So I am sure the signal strength will be much better on the Toronto channels from the roof.

Tough to tell how long that screw is from the pic. I am guessing about 2"?

I picked up a tube of roofing sealant yesterday from home depot when I got the pole for the mount and screws.
