I too have a sir-t451
I am not experiencing this problem.

something to try:

1) the stb has a QAM tuner.
Try connecting it to cable (if you don't have cable, try taking it over to a neighbours/friends house who has Rogers). I tried my box at my in-laws to see what I could get, and got a few channels. You must scan using cable as input.
If prob happens again it is the box as it is using a different tuner for QAM.
If prob happens doesn't happen again, might be something else.

IF anyone knows how to display the firmware version on t451's, please post so we can look into this direction as well.

eyeQ I gave one of my T451 to a friend and they are not experiencing any problems.

Did you recently change or move around anything in your setup, that can cause a short like new cables, connectors, add a amp ?

If you stripped the cable yourself, its very important that none of the craided ground/shield touched the center copper wire.

Did you recently change or move around anything in your setupHmmm, possssibly... I recently attached a splitter so I can plug in my police scanner to the roof-mounted antenna; I'll check that or remove it altogether for a test.

[However, remeber that there are still about 2 channels that work OK, so I wonder about how that could be. ]

99gecko, I will try your suggestions at my neighbour's house. A related question: will I get any different channels on their Rogers cable than their regular box does?

Hmmm, possssibly... I recently attached a splitter so I can plug in my police scanner to the roof-mounted antenna; It might not be a direct short, but could either be either noise or too low an impedance (reactance changes with frequency).A related question: will I get any different channels on their Rogers cable than their regular box does?We are drifting off topic here, but depeding on the cable company, you might get a subset of what they receive on their regular box as you will only be able to tune unencrypted channels. They will be mapped to different channel numbers however (the actual channel number not the virtual number their box uses).

I removed the splitter that lets my police scanner share the roof antenna, and the problem's still there: the 451 constantly turns on/off. Next is to try it on Rogers cable...

I just spoke to ePVision (same guy I spoke to last spring) and he had information about the next model. This is my list of observations of the current model;
http://www.epvision.com/

Pluses;
1. Price.
2. Best sensistivity (so far of any tuner).
3. 8VSB & QAM tuners.
4. Multiple outputs including DVI & VGA.

Minuses;
1. No channel up/down on front panel.
2. No 'stand-by' button on front panel.
3. You can't add channels that aren't in the original scan (major issue with most tuners).
4. NOT SUITABLE FOR 4x3 DISPLAYS! Aspect control doesn't work on HD channels.
5. NO channel display on front panel.
6. On screen menu is very hard to read on a smaller screen.
7. No separate memories for OTA & cable.
8. No on-screen display of volume.
9. Two color LED on front panel doesn't tell you if the set booted properly or if it is 'on' or in 'standby'. It is red for booting and orange any other time.
10. Power consumption is almost as much in 'stand-by' as it is in the 'on' state (.13A vs .19A).

Changes to the new model:

Should be available by years end,
Will have front panel channel up/down buttons,
Channel display on the front panel,
NTSC tuner (both cable & OTA),
Next generation intergraded ATI chip (all in one tuner decoder),
Should be able to add a channel that wasn't in the scan by a direct input (eg: 28.1),
NO composite or S-video out!
NO separate memories for OTA and cable. You get either one or the other!

Unknowns:
If stretch mode was added for a 4x3 HD channel to display on a 4x3 monitor,
Price.

Also, there is a 3rd generation in the works that will have a EPG (possibly TV Guide On Screen). Unknown much more about that one. I suggested dual memories and he suggested dual tuners and dual inputs.
Good luck on that...........

BTW, that 32" LCD set on their web site won't be available. They can't import it at the price point they need to make a profit because of LCD price drops. I suggested pulling that model off their site and he agreed (as he has with just about everything else I said).

Apparently Omni has very recently adjusted their psip data.
Is it possible that this caused the problem?
Now that the psip is adjusted, how about trying a rescan to see if the problem is gone?

Does anyone know how to do a reset, or reboot of the SIR-T451? Maybe that would help.

1)there is a Humax tuner that requires you unplug the power supply to reset. You might want to try this if you haven't already.
2) Also try leaving it unplugged; no power or antenna, for extended period (overnight), in case there is an internal capacitor that will discharge.
3)How long have you been using the pre-amp for?
4) Are you cnnected digitally (DVI) or via component, composite, s-video. Does your display support HDCP?
5) Verify that your output selector switch on back, matches your connection type

these are not all probably problems but it is a starting point.

1)...unplug the power supply to reset. You might want to try this ...

Hmm, since a PS has two 'ends', which do you mean? Unplugging the 120VAC plug, or something internal?

2) Also try leaving it unplugged; no power or antenna, for extended period (overnight), in case there is an internal capacitor that will discharge.

Good idea; although I do remove all power overnight, I will try for 24+ hrs, AND unplug the antenna.

3)How long have you been using the pre-amp for?

What pre-amp do you mean -- a component inside the Samsung 451 OTA receiver? I don't have one of those amps that attaches inline on the antenna's signal, like a Channel Master 7777, if that's what you mean.

4) Are you cnnected digitally (DVI) or via component, composite, s-video. Does your display support HDCP??

This Samsung 451 OTA receiver goes to TWO monitors: first is a Sony CRT via COMPOSITE, and secondly there's my Boxlight 1HD/Sanyo Z1 front projector, and that's via COMPONENT. Actually everything is 'switched' via an audio-video receiver, my Yamaha RX-V640. I'm not sure what HDCP is, but I beleive it's a connection type, and neither of my monitors has this mentioned near the out jacks.

5) Verify that your output selector switch on back, matches your connection type

I guess you mean the 480p, 480i, etc. selector switch. I tried it to no avail, but I don't think this would be related as it really seems to be an issue about the 451 finding a nice, strong channel, then 'freaking out', and shutting off, and then turning on again, and repeat 1000x.

I also want to take a moment to send a sincere thanks to all you 'strangers' who've been so kind to help me along w/ this issue. Nice folks you are...

I've been looking all over the place in the US for this beast Circuit City, BestBuy, B&H, etc., and they are all sold out.

Found it (and ordered) from JR.com. Hopefully its on its way. US $189.00 plus whatever UPS screws me for paying the GST.

Since this is a scarce beastie, thought y'll would like to know.

Funny, I just looked at that site and saw it for $179.99 less $20 instant savings = $159.99 US. Although they do have the wrong product info, they call it the DBT H260F.

Mingy, since it looks like you're the first on DHC to be getting a Samsung DTB H260F, plz let us know how it is, and how it compares to your previous OTA receiver. Are you already set up w/ a roof antenna? What is your current box, and how is it?

Funny, I just looked at that site and saw it for $179.99 less $20 instant savings = $159.99 US. Although they do have the wrong product info, they call it the DBT H260F.I included the shipping cost - sorry for the confusion. You know I was so excited, I didn't realize the product code is transposed (DBT vs. DTB) or that other details are off. I'll call them.Mingy, since it looks like you're the first on DHC to be getting a Samsung DTB H260F, plz let us know how it is, and how it compares to your previous OTA receiver. Are you already set up w/ a roof antenna? What is your current box, and how is it?Yes. I experimented with my ExpressVu 9200 (a post of questions about this got buried in the satellite thread). I'm in rural Milton so I got a CM 4228. For a laugh I tried an attic install and pull in everything except SUN and OMNI (I don't know for sure if CITY is on air yet, Global said they are working on it). I've called OMNI for details, so I don't know what the story is there.

SUN is at only 4kw and I probably have to tweak the antenna (outside would do, but I'll try moving the antenna and the new tuner first)

The engineer at SUN told me that they transmitt from Toronto to their Hamilton repeater using OTA ATSC (different frequencies, and presumably a professional tuner). That tells you something about the reliability and quality of OTA!

I get all the Buffalo stations I know on air except the Christian one (big loss) and 7.1 (I get 7.2 at very high strength).

I figure the 9200 is buggy and primitive so I'm hoping the newest Samy will be better - if that's what I'll get.

If I get what I think I ordered, I'll write it up.

*** Update: just got off the line with J&B and it seems the letters are transposed on the website. So, presumably they'll update.

*** Another update. Read the manual from the US site. The STB support English/Spanish/French. Whats interesting is the Parental Locks in the STB include Canadian English and French categories. Not to make too big of a deal of it, but why would the box/manual support French and Canadian locks unless maybe Samsung intends to sell this in Canuckistan?

So now I just have to wait for it to show up :)

(I don't know for sure if CITY is on air yet, Global said they are working on it)

I know this is off thread, but CITY-DT is on air (I belive they were one of the first ones) but they are very low power. Global proably won't be on air until 2009. A good source of information on the staions available in Southern Ontario is Remote Central (http://www.remotecentral.com/hdtv/).

If I get what I think I ordered, I'll write it up.

I am looking forward to reading your write-up.

power is power, just unplug,.... or use scissors

Good idea; although I do remove all power overnight, I will try for 24+ hrs, AND unplug the antenna.

if you mean you turn off a power bar/center/ups that is the same effect as above, anything to stop the stb from receiving power in stand-by mode.

What pre-amp do you mean..

sorry, I must of mixed Yaamon's reply up with yours - he mentioned pre-amp, you didn't

I'm not sure what HDCP is,
High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection, tons of info out there if you're interested. Reason I asked is there is (or potentially are) problems, where the display uses digital input specifically HDMI, but audio goes to another component (such as HTR). Also the HDCP handshake doesn't allow passthrough (an intermediate component), the stb might downconvert its output, if somehow it detected another digital video component in the mix.
Just thought that the stb might have "gotten confused" rather than just disallow digital output. That is, if it had encountered a HDCP flag, which I thought no broadcasters were actually using yet - just wanted to clear that up. But if your input to the receiver is component then that doesn't really matter.

I guess you mean the 480p, 480i, etc. selector switch...but I don't think this would be related ...
Yup, you're probably right.

Other thoughts,
have you recently started using a unified remote control (ie Harmony etc)? Discreet codes can sometimes cause headaches for owners. If so check out the remotes thread or remotecentral.com

really seems to be an issue about the 451 finding a nice, strong channel, then 'freaking out'...
for the antenna experts out there, does this sound like overpowering? I wouldn't think so since there is no pre-amp involved.

and one last thing, could you verify which stations are giving you the grief and which ones are fine?

good luck

for the antenna experts out there, does this sound like overpowering?Negative, you would not have a power-off situation, just a reception issue if overpowering was a problem.

crazy me
I can't believe I didn't remember this until now. I had an interesting similar prob I had years ago with an old Apex DVD player.
It would do all kinds of crazy stuff when receiving commands from the remote - zoom in or out when pause was pushed, jump to the main menu if any of the numeric buttons were pushed, or power off whenever I tried to FF (chapter skip worked fine). It wasn't the remote itself (I changed batteries), because when I tried controlling with a different brand remote that had been programmed for that DVD player, similar results.

BUT, what did work okay, was getting my lazy butt off the couch and using the buttons on the front panel - used it that way for a longtime, never bothered cutting myself a reaching stick:). I assumed it was an internal logic prob, but I never really gave it much thought, other than to remind myself that resting a sweaty beer bottle on electronics isn't such a great idea.

for a lark, try just controlling without the remote.

i'm thinking about bidding on a Samsung SIR-T165 at around 1:00pm today, for about 150$

is this a decent tuner? I'm not looked for the best tuner out there or anything, but I just want to make sure that i'm at least getting my moneys worth by buying this tuner.
