I'm looking for stores in the Mississauga area that sell ATSC tuners. I'm actually in Oakville, so the closer to Oakville the better. I seem to remember seeing this info in a thread somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it.

I've called around to a bunch of TV/electronics stores in Oakville, but most of them didn't even seem to know that such a thing existed... and of course the ones that do know what they are don't carry them. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm looking for an ATSC tuner with the following:

1. Fast channel changing and general operation.
2. Known to be solid, not prone to bugs or other issues.
3. Scale HD signals to SD output.

Would also like to have DVR functionality but this isn't required.

I'm looking for an ATSC tuner with the following...If you check out the various receivers discussed in this thread you'll find several that have your required feature set, as well as an ATSC DVR made by LG. Personally I would avoid the cheapy eBay route because the performance of newer ATSC tuners these days is noticeably better.

Any input on this item. There are a few posts in this thread about that receiver already. That model is sold under a couple of different brand names.

So, does the LST-4600A, which the seller claims is a newer version of the 3410A, support my needs, which are: fast, no bugs, and will scale HD to an SD output?

...the LST-4600A...That LST-4600A box is not meant to be a standard ATSC STB. It is very expensive and is meant to handle a variety of tasks for commercial encrypted OTA digital TV services in the USA. It is not a DVR.

As for LG's retail-grade ATSC tuners, I own an LG LST-4200A, which unfortunately is no longer on the market, but I can vouch for the quality of LG ATSC tuners. They meet all of your criteria. A Samsung SIR-T451 will also meet your criteria, so you might find the info you need in the Samsung STB thread.

I could go out to Markham, although it can be a long ride if traffic is bad. I kind of just wanted to get it as near as possible for local dealer support. But I guess that in Canada we have to get our ATSC tuners where we can find them...

I'll take the Samsung under advisment since they are only $150 off of Ebay. Are you aware of any good DVRs that also fullfil my requirments? I'm not afraid of using sat recievers such as the Bell 4100 as long as they don't require me to have a subscribtion to setup.

I have a CM4221 antenna indoors facing south, on the 5th storey of a condo, in Vaughan/Thornhill. I've gotten my hands on a used Samsung TS160 *WITHOUT* the remote control, which I've hooked up to the RCA inputs of my regular 19" portable TV. The "scan" function only picks up 9-1, 25-1, 57-1, and 66-1. This is really disappointing, since I get a whole slew of channels (including Buffalo) on regular UHF.

I understand that the "scan" function misses "marginal" signals that are perfectly viewable. I'd like to either buy a remote, or even just borrow it for a couple of hours. I could go berserk, and manually add 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, ... 69-1, 69-2, 69-3 to the master list, and promise never to run "scan" again (which wipes the master list).

I have a TS360 (I assume the interface is almost the same as the 160) and don't see any easy way to add a digital channel that it didn't scan. In the Add/Remove Channels option, you only have the option to add or remove channels that it has already scanned. So, if the signal is weak and the channel doesn't get scanned, you can't do anything about it.

If anybody has a spare Samsung ATSC or other brand name and can sell it to me I would appreciate it... ideally I need the one that can get Toronto and Buffalo HD TV stations ... I'm located around Bathurst & Yonge.

Hi zoom102,

Samsung ATSC tuners are not yet sold in Canada for some strange reason, so most owners had to order from the U.S.A. to get theirs.

Other DHCers have said that you can buy different brand ATSC tuners in Markham, ON from these companies:

GreyTech:

MobilTech Electronics:
http://www.mobiltechelectronics.com/

Also do you already have the other OTA gear that you will need?

Zoom102 (& anyone else looking for ATSC STB)

Factory Direct has a few Sammy SIR-T451 factory refurb's for sale $199 Cdn.

http://www.factorydirect.ca/catalog/product_spec.php?pcode=SA0451

More $$$ than on ebay, but at least its Cdn$, it isn't an auction, and if you could pick it up you wouldn't have to pay shipping and border duty. There are several stores in GTA. Call ahead to confirm the unit actually exists on the shop floor.

I'm new to OTA as well, and picked one this afternoon to see what I can get. Unfortunately will be a couple of weeks before I can post results or evaluate whether the unit is DOA :( .

(note: I have had a bad experience with refurb equipment in the past -buyer beware I guess).

good luck

Thanks for the tip, 99gecko. I picked up a SIR T-451 at the Brampton location. (the only one they had)
I hope it works well as it is a gift for a friend who is joining the OTA gang.

I was not sure what came over me. I did not realize that the HD TV I just bought Sony KDF46E2000 does have the ATSC tuner ... so the Samsung ST-451 is a surplus now ... I may use it for second TV but will sell it at cost in case someone may have a need for it ...

It's a STB with dual tuners that you plug into your home network, and you can then watch (and record) HDTV on any of the computers on the network. And it's only US$169. Seems promising, but I think I'd wait a bit to hear what other people say about it. If they had a real picture of it up, instead of that Photoshop job, I might have a bit more confidence.
