All astc digital broadcast in the GTA are in the UHF band so you need a UHF antenna.Rabbit ears are for Vhf 2-13.You don't need max strength.

Brought back the Directv HD to Best Buy, no hassels on the return. Went to Circuit City and bought the Samsung SIR-T451, and I am using the Terk TV55 indoor antenna.

They also had a ProBrand receiver - they had an out of the box $160, but I know how the Samsung works, so I spent $250 on it. The antenna was $45.

Everything works great, from my basement I can get all Detroit HD channels, I may have to tweak the antenna slightly on different channels.

Only, one thing, on CBS out of Primetime, the audio was out of sync. Other than that works great.

I have written to Samsung, pointing out HDTV OTA is here and has an audience...I came across an email I sent Samsung over a year ago on the very same topic that was never answered. Good to see that other companies are filling the void.

I am a newbie, being born a few days ago. I have a Panasonic HDTV PT50Dl54. The digital scan rate is 720p. I also have a Coolsat 6000 FTA receiver with terrestrial antenna input. Neither mention ATSC so I don't know if it is supported. In the old days you just ran the wire to the antenna input and checked the channel which I guess is more complicated today.

Your monitor has two NTSC tuners but no ATSC tuner. You will require an external receiver for ATSC OTA digital reception.

The Coolsat FTA receiver doesn't support ATSC - or HD reception from the Satellite, either.....

According to Panasonic website your TV is HDTV ready. This means that you do not have an ATSC tuner built in. Requires separate receiver to view HDTV signal. You need another STB for ATSC decoding.

THe weird thing is that other websites say that you do have ATSC built in. 2001 AudioVideo says that the TV has ATSC (Digital - SDTV, HDTV), NTSC (analog). See:
http://www.2001audiovideo.com/product_info.php?id=PT50DL54&clr=

Visit the Panasonic website for details or read your manual about ATSC. If the TV has ATSC tuner then all you need to do is plug in your OTA antenna into the coax cable in and scan for channels and you will see digital TV.

Your Coolsat appears not to handle ATSC either. Only option is to get an ATSC STB or get digital cable from Rogers. See - http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/136560/rpem/ccd/productDetailReview.do

rlassiter, have you already found the links that are at the bottom of this post? If not, please click on them to get up to speed on OTA.

Hi all, trying to sort through all this and heres what I'd like.

Can I purchase a top box that will hook into my non-hdtv, but allow
me to recive the ota signals? As another input to the tv. Would the tv
even display the picture? Even without the hd aspect, the ota reception
of digital is awsum. (when it works). I use an antenna for analog, and have
a hdtv tuner in my pc, get lots of channels (alas CFTO-DT woes).

Remember the tuners you could buy to help out the tv's with the rotary knobs that only had 14 channels?

TIA............Rob

Rob, Please have a look in the OTA forums. The various STBs, etc have been discussed in there in great detail. I've moved your post to that forum.

Every ATSC set top box on the market that I can think of can also do conventional TV support via S-Video and/or Composite and/or RF connectors and RCA audio jacks. My LG allows a variety of outputs and screen displays.

The QAM is essentially useless in Canada - see the Digital Home FAQ "Can I get digital cable". In order to record HD, you will need something external like D-VHS, or an ATSC STB/Recorder (not cheap).Actually QAM is not "useless" as you say. It is not great but not useless. See comments here - see what I was able to get off Rogers QAM

Which antenna would I need?I believe you've posted in one or both of the Central GTA Reception Results threads in the past, so you can see the lists in there of channels other people are getting in your area. If you want the Buffalo stations you'll probably have difficulty with the fact that your place has a north-facing balcony.

I can't help you about your Westinghouse set, but I'd lay odds it has a standard 5th generation ATSC tuner chipset so its results should be fairly uniform with today's typical new TVs.

Does HD have program guide information for HD OTA? I don't get any program guide information from my Hughes HTL-HD ATSC OTA DirecTV STB. Just wondering if this in normal...?

Even if the tuner has provisions for a guide, not all stations provide one. My Samsung has a mini guide but sometimes it just says DTV program or NO DATA. Then again, some stations provide extensive guides for a few hours ahead. So, if you have guide provisions on board your Hughes tuner, it will all depend on the station to make it available.

Even if the tuner has provisions for a guide, not all stations provide one.Unfortunately that is so true today. The guide data is included in an OTA DTV station's PSIP data. Unfortunately this area of digital broadcasting hasn't been kept up with in every case. Flavario, see post #8 in the OTA Forum Knowledge Base and FAQ:

Thanks for the info. I get pretty much every OTA DTV broadcast in the Toronto and Buffalo area. Every channel shows "Regular Schedule" in the guide. I guess my question is, are all the channels in the GTA area not sending this PSIP data, or is this a problem specific to my HTL-HD receiver?

Is anyone else in the GTA area getting any type of guide data?

Just for you, young man, I did a station to station look for a guide. At 2:30pm on Saturday July 29/06 this is what I found...
No guide: 49-2, 9-1, 15-1, 25-1, 66-1
Partial guide: 43-3
Full guide: 43-1, 43-2, 49-1, 2-1, 4-1, 4-3, 7-1, 23-1, 23-2, 29-1, 29-2
Sorry, I didn't look at 2-2, 7-2. Results can change at any moment:D

Thank you...I get all of those stations, with the exception of 49-1,15-1 and a flakey 66-1. I also get 5-1 (CBC HD)
I get nothing on the guide except for "Regular Schedule".

Update: I've determined that the Hughes HTL-HD does not support program guide when you use it with Cable/ANT only. I previously had it configured for DirecTV/Antenna and the guide would appear, but all the Digital OTA channels would be "Regular Schedule". When I switched off the DirecTV (set to No Dish installation), the guide was no longer available and a message appeared "Does not support Guide for Ant/Cable" ... so...thats the answer...

Maybe its time to get a Samsung Tuner...???

Sorry, 5-1 had a guide at the time. Is it worth getting a Samsung at this point just for the guide?
