my sister bought a cheap LCD HDTV Dynex DX-L19-10C , but cant receive any OTA, she thought it would get some channels with its own "internal antenna"???

1. the manufacturer doesnt list this model, in its current, nor discontinued, but their other similar sized models specify can be used with antenna because of "built in HDTV Tuner" - I assume ATSC tuner, The retailers specs show the correct model, but specify the tuner:NTSC. Does this mean it has an NTSC tuner ONLY?

2. Can any of these LCD TV receive any Analog or Digital channels without a separate antenna, in other words if the signal is strong enough and of the corrrect type (analog or digital) will the TV sitting alone in the room pick up any signal at all...

thanks

According to what I found with Google, that set is NTSC only, which means you can't receive digital OTA signals, without a converter. I expect you'll need some sort of antenna with that set.

I have one of these (Dynex DX-L19-10C). It does not have an ATSC tuner. It has component and HDMI inputs hence HD.

JamesK, & Bubba,

thanks for the info, indeed I tried on my lcd HDTV which has ATSC & NTSC tuners, without any antenna attached, and I could NOT get ANY kind of signal at all...the old analog, I assume NTSC tuners, used to pick up the local analogs quite easily without using anything, not even those rabbit ears....

goforit,

In the small sizes, ive tried 2 LGs, 3 Samsungs, one Toshiba, Zenith STB, Apex STB, Tivax STB, and Coby STB, and EVERY TIME the LG EASILY outperformed any of the other tuners, sometimes picking up some signal on the most difficult channels. (BTW, for me the picture quality was easily the best on the LG also)

That said, a fluctuating meter means a poor 2nd edge signal for your tuner, NOTHING you can do about it.

Balm:

I was setting up someone's Blu-Ray player last weekend, and decided to give it a try. I connected a 3 foot coax to the RF in and left it dangling. The TV set, a Toshiba, picked up a half dozen analog and one digital station - CFTO. I was surprised not to get a couple more - this was right downtown at Eglinton and Yonge.

Interesting Steve, ill try that tonight, basically the coaxial (conductor) is acting like an antenna (probably for a specific frequency range) would - this is what I would get on my old analog tv, except I had NOTHING connected to it, so I suspected it was picking up RF thru the power cord...

thanks for that

I connected a 3 foot coax to the RF in and left it dangling.

It doesn't take much of an "antenna" to receive strong signals. Back when I was a kid (yes, there was TV then), TVs had screw terminals for twin lead. Just touching those terminals was often enough to receive something.

*ANY* connection (except optical) can be a source of ingress. RF can ride the shield (braid), the shield may not cover 100% and allow ingress into the cable, the power cord is a favourite, getting past power supply filtering... Audio / video inputs and outputs are another source. In THEORY, if a TV set is only connected to the mains supply, it should receive *nothing*. At this point, there are only two possibilities, direct ingress into the set (plastic housings etc.) and via the power line. Clamp-on ferrite cores around the power / audio / cable lines can help. A simple test with the power cord is to wrap a number of turns (MAKE SURE IT HAS NO NICKS OR CUTS!!!!) around your arm while receiving stations without the antenna connected and the combination of the coiling action of the power cord and body capacitance will reduce the surface RF on the power cord. If no change occurs, then direct ingress would be the next guess. In that case, enclose the TV in a grounded copper box. :-) (for some reason it might be harder to watch though...)

I was recently in Best Buy in Whitby,ON, looking at LCD TVs. When I asked the sales guy whether the Dynex TVs had ATSC tuners built in, he said he beleived they were the only ones on the floor that didn't have ATSC tuners built in.

O.T. - He said it was easy to check a TV simply by tuning it to CH 14. He flipped the Dynex to 14 & got nothing. He flipped the adjacent TV to 14 & got an HD signal.

I asked him what was going on there, since the HD signal was not FOX 29. He said that they no longer run component feeds to each TV, as it's cheaper for them to run an in house ATSC feed over coax. Sure enough there were only coax lines to each of the TVs I checked, that were showing HD content.

I've seen many modulators for sale, but never an ATSC one. Wonder what they're using for this. I've since checked some other, older stores, to find they're still running component feeds.

There are ATSC/QAM modulators, they're just mighty expensive for home use.
But over all the TV's in a store, I'd imagine it's cheaper than component.

BestBuy has been using the COAX feed for at least a year, well before I bought my TV in 2008.

I believe the signal is 1080i but I'm not 100% sure. 1080i OTA is actually a very good test to see how good a TV looks like. You can also imagine how easy it is for hook up.

On post 194 from TVMARIO (page 13),he asking "I pointed my antenna towards the CN Tower and used the automatic channel programming feature. I then moved the antenna to another location to get Buffalo/ Rochester stations. If I use the automatic programming feature the previous stations on the tv's memory get deleted."

Someone know if it possible to keep in memory channel set in different location with Panasonic LCD made in 2009?

Alright, I don't know if this is in the right forum, so if it's not, please let me know / move it / whatever.

Anyway, I just got a Sony Bravia HDTV today, and was excited to watch some digital channels on it.

I already got a Sharp HDTV in my room, which that has no antennas or nothing attached, and it's able to find around 70 digital channels. I also get 2 HD channels.

So, I thought the Sony is newer, and would sure be able to find the same channels as well right...?

Well, turns out the Sony Bravia I bought finds 0 Digital channels... WTF.

Does anyone have any clue as to why this may be happening??

Thanks.

EDIT:

Nevermind, I got it to work :}

thisiseazy, what is your location (city, nearest major street corner)?

JamesK

It might need an antenna, if you're not on cable.

I'm not too sure what I did, but yeah.

Oh, and I'm located in Niagara Falls.

Also, thanks for moving my post

What was your solution?

I'm not too sure, but I think it might have been when I switched the viewing mode to Cable instead of Antenna.

The reason I'm not too sure is because I thought I already auto searched while in that mode, but I might have not.

Would that alter the results?
