Just wondering if people could post some of their latest results. I have Shaw High-speed and am wondering how these results compare with others. I did this yesterday and took 3 readings:

1) down 544 kbit/s
up 600 kbit/s

2) down 1296 kbit/s
up 792 "

3) down 736 "
up 672"

Do these compare for what I am paying for? I was thinking of phoning and questioning the download speeds but would like to know if this is okay.

Which website were you using to test? Here's another one...

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Here are my results with Rogers (5 Mb service)

Download Speed: 4853 kbps (606.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 769 kbps (96.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

The readings never vary more than a couple of percent.

Here's what I'm getting out of Edmonton using Shaw 5MB service on the speakeasy site: Seattle server

Down 4683 kbps

Up 469 kbps

It's pretty consistent.

Nighthawk1, is your Shaw cable modem recent. I requested an upgrade on my modem last summer (mine was 4 years old) and found that made a huge difference. They did not charge me anything for it, either.

The newer modem was better at handling traffic and the like...

I used the Shaw online test. It gave a green light at the end of it implying that everything is within specs but I'm wondering if the other (red amber) lights even work. My modem is an older Terryon model. I thought I had purchased it at one point years ago. I have read on some forums how these older models were causing problems with some online gaming, and that Shaw has switched to the newer Motorola modems. I think I'll phone and see what happens.

Shaw here in Calgary connected to the Seattle server.

Download: 3703 kbps
Upload: 478 kbps

That's over wireless through a d-link router. I haven't tried the direct to modem connection, but seems consistent with others.

Nighthawk and JesseJ ...

Seriously, trade your modems. If you have either the Terayon or the Motorola Cybersurfer, you have older modems that are considerably less consistent with their speeds, for one, but are also a heck of a lot slower than the new DOCSIS modems. You will be lucky to average 2.7 Mb/s on the old modems, but DOCSIS sees around 4.5-5.0 Mb/s. It is a free exchange if you have already purchased the older model you have in the home.

Contacted Shaw on Friday, went throught a lot of computer configuring which in the end didn't really change anything. An appointment was set up for today. Exchanged the old Terayon for the Motorola and am trying out a free month of Shaw Extreme. I must say, when you have concerns, my experience has been that Shaw does come through on the service front.

Over the weekend, I did random tests with the speakeasy site. My upload numbers have always been quite consistent ~450-480. Downloads varied from 700 to at one point a high of 4800. More often it was around 1100 but as I said did fluctuate.

RNA, why is your download from Seattle so different? I get the same speeds on all the test sites. I just tried Seattle - numbers below.

Download Speed: 4762 kbps (595.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 747 kbps (93.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

As indicated before, mine rarely fluctutes more than a couple of percent (post 2)

I have no idea. I tried it and thats what I got. On one attempt the speed was half of that I reported (?).
