Danster 2011-09-06, 05:47 PM Thanks J for checking out the sound on CBC. I hadn't tried using my makeshift antenna. I wonder if CBC is aware of ther sound problem?
As for 720p, there is another thread explaining why they went that way...
Taz416 2011-09-06, 05:58 PM I am just up from Clements Drive in Fredericton. Google Earth shows an elevation of 38m. Would it be totally insane to try and pick up the VHF Channel 8 and 9 from MArs Hill, ME. Maybe a Winegard HD8200P or try a homemade jobbie specifically for VHF-HI?
Totally insane?
tvlurker 2011-09-06, 06:18 PM Taz416, look at TVfool online maps at see what it says for your exact locationl

Basically, if you are not on the west side of or on top of Keswick Ridge, forget it short of a lot of effort.
There seems to be a zone from Keswick Ridge to Burts Corner to Birdton where it is possible to get the Mars Hill broadcasts.
halifax-ota 2011-09-06, 09:22 PM my $50 digital to analog converter finally arrived from radio shack, yay! i always got super analog reception so i used my old antenna setup which is a dual dipole rabbit ears on the ceiling on the 3rd floor fed into a splitter. today i got 95% to 100% digital signal for ctv, cbc, and global here on agricola st, which is 3 or 4 km from the transmitter. french cbc is still analog... been using it to fall asleep at nite.

downstairs on the second floor, i used a couple of UHF antennas fed into a splitter and frigged around until i got at least 60% on all 3 channels. looks great!

i know i'm close to the transmitter, basically line of sight, but fiddling around with basic antennas seems to work. i must say twiddling two antennas fed parallel into a splitter gave me much much much better results compared to a single antenna in order to receive all the channels simultaneously without having to getup off the couch or get out of bed in order to to grab the antenna and stand like "this".
experiment! and don't throw anything away, or else you will need it tomorrow!
lawrencer56 2011-09-07, 05:48 PM Hey Dan,
I'm in Kensington, PEI and just looking into the HD OTA situation over here. Did you get your problems resolved?
Regards,
Larry
lawrencer56 2011-09-07, 05:55 PM What kind of antenna are you using?
RussPE 2011-09-07, 07:49 PM I also live in Kensington PEI. I am receiving DTV channels as follows.
13.1 CBC 100%
8.1 CTV 86%
42.1 Global 95%
27.1 Global 93% Moncton
11.1 CBC French Moncton. I have received it at 65% in the morning when
conditions are good but usually dont get it.
I am using a four bay bowtie type antenna with a built in amplifier and have added a dipole to improve high VHF channels.
Nova12 2011-09-07, 07:51 PM Hi,
Four days ago, using a simple UHF/VHF indoor antenna and a directional digital amp, I was able to pick up CBC and Global very clearly, and French CH13 (somewhat weak)
Today, Global 8.1 is showing up as weak/no signal. I've done the "double-scan" routine as suggested in other forums. I pick up CBC, CTV, and French CH13...but still no Global.
According to my tvfool results, I am 1.3 miles from the transmitter in Halifax and showing "green zone" for all four channels. Can anyone shed light on why this has happened? I've looked through the forums but couldn't find anyone reporting the same problem in Halifax.

Is 13 analog or digital? If analog, is it snowy, or does it have any squiggly lines?
What is a directional amp? Not sure why you need an amp so close to the transmitter. It may be causing you more harm than good.
Nova12 2011-09-07, 09:37 PM 13 is analog (was always snowy) -- it shows with squiggly lines now. The amp was bought as a "last chance" effort to get decent reception - even though I'm only 1.3 mi. from the transmitters I never had good reception until I hooked it up. It is a 24dB bi-directional digital amplifier for UHF/VHF, suggested to me by salesperson as a way of boosting my reception. I'll unhook the amplifier, rescan and see if that makes a diff.
tvlurker 2011-09-07, 10:07 PM That's strange. A bi-directional amp is usually a distribution amp for bi-directional cable systems, and as such is usually unlikely to have a super-low Noise Figure. I'm at a loss to explain how it would help you if there is only a short cable run from your indoor antenna to your TV.
Squiggly lines on 13 indicates that you are likely getting harmonics of local FM transmitters. These would also hard your reception of channel 8. You have at least two 100 kW transmitters in Halifax between 90 and 93 MHz which could interfere with reception of channel 8, particularly if you use a preamp.
hitch33 2011-09-08, 08:45 AM Well I tried over the weekend to get CBC PEI with my MS2002 and wasn't able to get a signal in Moncton. I'm considering upgrading my system in order to pull in the signal. I'll try a few more tweaks first however.
ripcaster 2011-09-08, 09:46 AM CTV Moncton is finally up. Selecting 29.1 auto flips you to 2.1 and there it is. About time! :)
RussPE 2011-09-08, 11:45 AM I am receiving CTV Moncton ch 29.1 (2.1) here in Kensington PE.
The picture is solid at a signel quality of 51% compared with a signal quality of 83% for Global Moncton ch 27.1.
hitch33 2011-09-08, 12:45 PM Thanks for the info guys! I just checked on the way out the door this morning on our old TV and saw I was still getting a signal so I assumed it was still down. So are they broadcasting on 29.1 or 2.1? That part was confusing for me. Thanks much!
lawrencer56 2011-09-08, 04:36 PM Thanks Russ. Where did you get the equipment? Do you mind if I ask how much eveything cost?
I thought that my LCD TV had a digital tuner, but I guess it doesn't, so I'll have to buy a converter. I tried searching for channels, and all that I received were CBC Moncton and a French station; the same channels that I received with an older TV.
jeffNB 2011-09-08, 05:38 PM Like others have said, CTV Moncton has finally made it to air. Here is my signal report:
Signal strength: 99%
SNR 29.5 dB
AGC: 48%
1080i
So it's an easy catch in Moncton, easier for me than than Global 27.1
I should note that the "Maritimes Number One News Broadcast" is still in 4:3.
Jeff
OTAfred 2011-09-08, 05:52 PM Receiving Global NB(12-1) and CTV NB(9-1) over here in NS on the south mountain near Perotte, with a Channel Master 2016C at approx 30ft and Zinwell ZAT-970A converter. Set it all up yesterday.
Global has been great so far, no picture drop-offs at all. CTV has been a little sketchy.
I'm sure i'll need to invest in a better antenna at some point, since the CM 2016C is only medium range. but so far so good.
