Some updates:

I'm waiting with great anticipation about new product from Antennas Direct as well.

The design for the new 2 and 4-bay bowties has been completed. I ran a brief field test a couple of weeks ago and they performed pretty much as expected. I don't know yet when they'll move to production. The factory would still to re-tool, new packaging designed and produced, and then production can be scheduled. As it stands, the current production schedule is already filled for the next couple of months.

And although I have not heard anything about a redesigned 91xg,

There are no active plans to do so. Given the relatively small numbers of this antenna that we sell (mostly through distributors at very thin margins), the CFO said there's no financial point in proceeding with that project. Bragging rights are nice, but you can't make up the financial costs without adequate volume. Plus, with the FCC's looming uncertainty regarding spectrum re-allocation, there's no way to predict what is going to be needed anyway. Stay tuned but don't hold your breath.

I was hoping we'd hear from you! Thanks for the update. I'll snap up a new four-bay when they come out. At least we know where we stand regarding a redesigned 91xg. Now I might go and get one now that I know a new one is not on the drawing board.

I'll be getting the DB8- I feel it's better for RF 14 (WUTV) and slightly better for RF 23 (ION).

New AD 2 and 4 bay antennas coming sometime later this year. No new DB8?

The plans for any 8-bay are undecided. We might just come up with some type of upgrade kit so two 4-bays can be easily combined. It's still up in the air (the question, not the antenna).

That would actually make a lot of sense. You could offer it both separately (for who want to improve the performance of a 4-bay) or as part of a bundle (for those who know they need an 8-bay).

so an 8-bay clear stream has been discussed...?

Perhaps on hobbiest/enthusiast forums, but I'm not aware of any such discussion having taken place here.

We differentiate between loop-based vs. bowtie-based designs. Only the bowties are under discussion here as far as new antennas are concerned. I suppose I could be more explicit by stating "The plans for any 8-bay bowtie antennas are undecided"

~~~~~~~~sigh my db8 mounted on the house chimmney failed at -30C this winter// the picture became coat hanger quality
after talking with the installer I put my spare cm 4228 up , nice pick now with the moded harness
seems the stock harness , that db8 straight wire thing had a failure , why I don't know so I'm going to wire up the db8 with the same harness as the cm 4228 ie 2 stern balns to a single joiner then to a single wire
crap had to have the entire antenna removed and re installed
Don't the AD antennas have a lifetime warranty? If the balun failed, the should replace it. i think you need your store reciept. I'd call them, i read about another failure on here somewhere and they shipped him a new antenna.
I believe your talking about Jase88. He had a XG91 balun that failed. There are XG91 baluns that had two holes and one was not used for anything. The early generation housing did not have that second outlet properly covered. Moisture would eventually corrode the balun.
My XG91 has that same generation balun. I just cover it to prevent this.
Sorry to hear about your DB8 balun failure. I would just order a new one or just change the balun to another one.
The DB8 (as do the rest of our antennas) does have a lifetime warranty.
Just drop us a note using the Contact Us form on our website letting us know what you need and we'll get it shipped out.
We had some impressive hail here yesterday. After using my binoculars to inspect my XG91 and C5 antennae, I'm pleased to report that no damage is apparent.
Yes, I did have a balun issue. And AD promptly replaced the entire antenna no questions asked. All I wanted was a replacement balun, but they sent an entire new antenna.
Moisture was seeping down the bolt at the top of the balun which holds it to the boom. Also appeared that moisture was getting in via the active elements attached to the balun.
I highly recommend using a long-life silicone sealant anywhere water could penetrate.
I'm experiencing moisture issues yet again with my second XG-91.
We've had a wet spring here in Southern Ontario. Several very heavy downpours. After which I lose most of the upper 700MHz channels (channel 60-68). Of course this won't be an issue (from a performance perspective) after August 31st, but it's annoying right now. The channels return soon after the sun hits the antenna for a bit.
It probably doesn't take much moisture on the PCB balun to mess things up--maybe even a heavy condensation, which frequently happens here in spring and fall.
My next plan of attack is to fill the balun box itself with a water resistant expansion foam.
I wonder if AD still has ferrite baluns for the XG-91? I'm willing to trade a little performance for reliability in wet weather....
any chance droppin a small bag of dessicant inside the balun box might help?
Yes it's been raining a lot lately. Had to drain the homemade VHF Hi filter yesterday.
Was seeping thru the cover screw holes. Sealed it up a little better afterward.
Here on the West Coast (wet coast) that moisture problem would be a complete showstopper! OTAers out here will need to keep your troubles with them in mind, Jase88.
