Radio Shack in Canada will be a thing of the past July 1st. Circuit City bought out all 980 Canadian stores and Tandy, the owners of the Radio Shack name, won't let Circuit City, a major competitor, use the name Radio Shack so Circuit City is now in the processes of renaming all Canadian Radio Shack's to "The Source" and if you look at there web site there is no more Antenna stuff for the do-it-your-self-er.

It's sad because Radio Shack was always my favorite store growing up as a kid... I always liked there electronic lab kits like the 200 in one. Had that when I was 11 years old and built every project in it.

As a former Radio Shack manager myself, it will be interesting to see how Circuit City fills out the product niches like antennas and such: they used to buy a lot of their products from Radio Shack sources for Canadian distribution.

Circuit City is having their heads handed to them in the marketplace by Best Buy in the USA, and they have closed all of their Circuit City Express stores, which were small-box mall-based stores meant to compete with Radio Shack.

Circuit City never found the right combination of products to sell in these smaller stores, and never learned the important lesson that Radio Shack already knew: the profit is in all of the small parts, cables, and accessories, not the big-ticket items.

Circuit City has tried to sell accessories in their larger stores, but never quite got the product mix or the diversity right. I wonder if they will learn this lesson as they re-make their old Radio Shack stores into The Source.

My impression of most of the Canadian Radio Shack stores that I have seen in the Ottawa area is that they were often messy, crowded and badly merchandised: I hope that they can do better as The Source.

I also understand that Radio Shack will also be able to open Texas-Radio Shack-owned stores in Canada after their non-compete clause expires, and I have heard that they are seriously considering doing so. This should make for an interesting battle. Radio Shack is currently struggling internally in the USA , with a recent change in CEO and several top management ousters, so it will be interesting to see if and how they can pull this off...

When does this non-compete clause expire ?

I feel sorry for all the Radio Shack franchise owners here in Canada that must be losing a lot of sleep over all of this… must be a real nightmare for them!

I called Radio Shack and was told they have a UHF/VHF tv outdoor antenna with a range of 137 miles in uhf and 212 miles in vhf. in ideal conditions.

I have no number but was told it is 174 inches long and 83 elements. I find this very hard to take. Is this All Bull ? I have looked and looked and all i find is 100+ miles in vhf and 60 in uhf as max. Any advise . tia

It's a bit over exaggerated but remember you’er dealing with Radio Shack!

Look in there catalog and it says .....
" *Estimated range, based on outdoor reception over flat and open terrain"
Flat meaning pancake flat with no curvature of the Earth. Maybe they test there antennas in outer space?

Thats a huge antenna at 174 inches..... 14.5 Feet! If it's a Canadian Radio Shack you better move quickly and buy it as they will be gone forever in July.

Don't listen to anyone quoting you exact range figures like that. If you want a good combo antenna, have a look here:

Is there a particular antenna required for this? I saw a nexxtech HDTV antenna at Radio Shack here in Vancouver and wondered if this would work for OTA HD?

If you are referring to the 1501880 (15-1880) then I can confirm that it works. Keep in mind that im from the west end of the GTA so i pick up all the Toronto and Buffalo based OTA-HD signals. The antenna itself is great, signal strength ranging from the low 80s to high 90s. Best thing about The Source (aka RadioShack) is that you have 30 days to try it out. Otherwise any UHF antenna will do.

Truth be told, reception is so good there that even an indoor antenna gave excellent results. :D

Well no one was more surprised at the results that me...that's for sure! The cheapo $40 Radio Shack antenna I got (referred to by another member) was well worth it.

Stampeder is right about the variability of results since you wont be able to duplicate the same conditions in 2 different places...but take it from me (with a grain of salt, of course) if your setup with this antenna isnt producing results its not the antenna's fault. I chose to do the opposite of what Stampeder suggests and tried the "cheaper" indoor antenna alternative first before spending a lot of $$$ on an outdoor setup. Worked for me since all I had to do was run some cable and plug in the antenna...no climbing the roof, drilling holes, running cables through the attic or brick.

Its good that you mentioned money, wingnut88, because more than a few people have found themselves with lighter wallets as the owners of useless, underperforming indoor antennas.

My advice is that if a neighbour is getting good results with an indoor antenna, borrow it for awhile and test it in your own place first. ;) If after that you purchase an indoor antenna, nothing would make me happier than reading here about your satisfaction with your OTA reception results and exactly how you got them.

superx, i have the same antenna but live in mississauga.
i have no problems getting the buffalo stations (except WB).
try playing around with the positioning to see if that helps.
make sure you have the antenna as high as possible, mine is
in my spare bedroom on the 2nd floor.
failing that, the signal strength must not be strong enough to
reach richmond hill from b-lo. which means you need a stronger indoor
antenna or might have to invest in an outdoor unit.

good luck!

Hi, I just bought a Dell 32" LCD TV with a built in ASTC tuner and after reading a lot of posts in this forum I bought the 150-1880 indoor antenna from The Source. I live in the 404-Finch area and with the antenn pointing to south-south-east, the general direction of the CN Tower, I can pull-in some digital channels, the best are: CBC HD, CTV HD and City TV HD. Nothing from the States.

The TV will not tell me how strong are the signals, so I don't know how to aim the antenna once the picture starts to degrade. Can anyone tell me where exactly should I aim my antenna in order to get the strongest signal and also those US channels.

Thanks.

I don't think you'll have any luck with U.S. signals with an indoor antenna. Have you read this yet: http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/showpost.php?p=210931&postcount=1

Thanks for the reply. I am happy with what I have right now since it is free. Because I am living in a townhouse condo, I am not allowed to put anything outdoor or attach anything on the wall/roof. May be I will try to move the antenna to the second floor just to give it a try. The antenna I bought from The Source (Radio Shark before) is much praised by a lot of members, may be my location is no good.

Thanks again.

With your radio shack antenna you need to get it up to the second floor.

Before I installed my outdoor antenna I tried the same antenna in my family room which is on the north end of my house.

All I could get from that location was Cfto, Cbc amd City with a weak signal. This was with the antenna pointing south.

I move the antenna to my bedroom tv location on the second floor right on top of the family room and pointed the antenna south then I was able to pull in Cbs, Pbs, and a weak signal at times from Fox and Abc.

The Toronto ones came in stronger and City was now stable but no Sun.

So you should defiantely try and move the antenna as high as you can guet but then again you might have a long cable run ?

You might also want to look into the attic. In my area, there is a vocally enforced bylaw that restrict putting an antenna on the roof. I had tired several indoor antenna and found that non of them could give me a very reliable signal.

I found that I could install a full sized antenna inside my attic and now I get almost all the channels with the worst (SUN channel) getting around the 45-65% signal, but most of the channels are around 75-95%.

It was a hassle to put in the unit into the attic, and I know that I am loosing quite a bit of signal from it being inside, but given the limitations of my area it works very well.

I think that in the world of digital TV in Canada, size and height does matter.

A newbie to all of this and was looking for dealers to buy a Channel Master in the Thornhill, Ontario area. But came across the following for $70 on The Source By Circuit City website. Can anyone please comment on the specs (no additional details or name of antenna available):

125km VHF range, 90km UHF, 90km FM. Ideal for city and suburb use. Has 178cm (70") boom and 22 elements.
