What does the initialize function do in the toshibas maintenance menu screen?

B4 i wreck the player by doing something regretful.

The initialize function just resets your player to default. Meaning the next time you turn it on, it'll automatically return to the setup menu you were at when you first turned it on.

At least that's it did to me when I activated that feature.

Anyone experience sound problems with the Sahara HD Dvd? I got my machine yesterday. We watched Sahara and the sound was garbled during some of the dialogue in the movie. The rest of the sound was fine. Also noticed the garbled dialogue on the extra Across the Lands of the Sahara. No problems with the sound on other HD Dvd's (Phantom and The Searchers).

With the 5.1 multichannel analogs, the subwoofer is about -10 dB lower than it should be. To compensate and not have to increase Gain at the sub, I elected to set speaker levels in the HD-A1 for 5.1 channels at -9 dB but leaving the sub at 0 dB. That way, I simply need to increase the Yamaha's master volume and get very nice results for HD DVDs and for CDs.

The speaker level settings above are causing a small amount of humming of the speakers when there's no sound transmitted because the master volume is quite high.

Therefore, I changed the level settings back to 0 dB for all speakers. And the master volume now remains the same as with SPDIF. All I need to do is increase the sub Gain setting by 2 o'clock.

I may now toggle between SPDIF and the analogs to hear and appreciate the difference between DD Plus (displayed as DTS on the receiver display) and DD TrueHD with the analogs.

Had my player for a couple of days and the picture is awesome. However having problems with the sound.

Hooked up the player with my Denon receiver through the analog output/inputs. Set the DVD to PCM and got great sound........had to turn the volume up from my normal setting. There was also an annoying buzz and hum coming from all of my speakers. Quite noticeable on the quiet parts. Never had this before. So disconnected the analog cables and no hum or buzz. I was using cheap cables so tried a couple of Monster cables but got the same result. Finally put my Technics DTS/ Dolby 5.1 decorder which I had used with the "old" Dvd player in between the player and the Denon receiver. From the DVD player to the decoder I have the digital cable hooked up and analogs from the decoder to the Denon. It works fine now with no hum or buzz. (only problem was garbled dialog in the Sahara HD disc noted in the message above) Still have to put the volume up quite high. The DTS automatically lights up on the decoder when I have a HD DVD in. I understand that this setup eliminates DD+ and True HD. Any suggestions how I could eliminate the hum and use the analogs directly from DVD player to the receiver? Thanks

After further investigation, I found out in the Denon receiver's manual that the analog inputs are for an external decorder. I guess this is the reason I have a buzz and hum coming through my speakers when I hook up the HD-A1 through its analogs. Therefore, since that doesn't work properly and I don't have DTS I guess, I will have to consider a new receiver or settle for 2 channel sound. Any suggestions for a new receiver to work with the HD player? I now have a 1700 Denon 5.1 receiver rated at 75 W per channel.

Well thats what my manual states as well for the analog inputs. I never notice any buzzing. Do you have half decent cables for the hookups?

Thanks for the suggestion but replaced my 6 analog cables with a combination of 3 Monster cables and some left over component cables tonight and the buzz is still there on all 6 speakers. The buzz is loud enough to intrude on the quiet parts of a movie. I can't live with that or two channel sound. Any more suggestions or shall I start looking for a new receiver?

Are the speaker levels at 0 dB for all speakers in the player?

Thanks for your suggestion. All are set to 0 dB. When I set up my external DTS/DD decoder on its own using the same inputs there is no buzz or hum. I tried putting the decoder in between the HD player and the receiver using the inputs on all devices but the buzz came back.

It was getting too frustrating changing cables etc. to try to eliminate the buzz and hum so went out and purchased a new receiver. Have a Denon 7.1 with the analog inputs and DTS. Everything works fine and I can now choose between the DTS and the TrueHD or Dolby 5.1 +. My Toshiba is a demo machine that has the 2.0 firmware upgrade. We were wowed by the movie Seabiscuit last night.

Finally received my HD-A1 yesterday and must say I am VERY impressed. I watched Corpse Bride and some of Serenity and the pic quality blew me away. Corpse bride almost looked 3-D. The audio quality using the 5.1 channel analogs was fantastic!! I don't think I have heard my HK sound this good ever! I am really looking forward to watching Batman to hear what the TrueHD sounds like. I paid just under $500 taxes included which is less than the first DVD player I bought years ago.

Is anyone using their HD-A1 with a Monoprice 5X1 HDMI Revision 2.0 switch? I just received the switch yesterday to replace the 2X1 switch and I am still getting the dreaded HDMI ERROR 1 on the screen. I have tried everythign I can think of. Obviously it is a handshake problem. The only other device on the switch is my Bell 9200 which uses a DVI-HDMI adaptor. I have tried all the port numbers as well.

Do you consider that the image quality is better watching a movie on HD-DVD than watching, for example, LOST (that i consider to be the best broadcast on TV) on a HD receiver.

I personnally went to futureshop and saw Serenity (HD-DVD) playing on a Pionneer plasma(connected HDMI) and did not find it better than on The movie network on HD.

I watch a ton of Tv in HD using a 9200 with HDMI and nothing I have seen on Tv in HD is as good as the output from my HD-A1. There is no pixelation or macroblocking at all with the HD-A1.

I also previewed the HD-A1 at FS on an LCD tv and the picture looked horrible. In my experience FS does not properly calibrate their TV's which results in a subpar picture. I never trust what I see at FS, or anything the salespeople say for that matter.

I'm definately getting a PS3 for Blu-Ray but I'm also thinking about getting the HD-A1 for HD-DVD. Leons has it on sale for $599 and it seems like almost everyone is happy with it from what I've read here and on other sites.

I'm also wondering if anyone else has the HD-A1 hooked up to a Toshiba 50HM66. If so, how is the PQ?

If you want to save $ go to ecost.com and get a refurb. Even a new unit is a good price.

I trust that you are using the 5.1 multichannel analogs between the HD-A1 and the RX-V1500 since the Yamaha can't use HDMI as an input. Perhaps you'll say I don't need to tell you but I'll say it anyway... use the HDMI for Video directly to the TV. And use Component for TV... or is the TV much better with the digital connection?

Poolshark, sorry I can't speak to the Rev. 2.0. The earlier version of the HDX-501 works fine with my HD-A1.

Yes I use the 5.1 analog for HD-DVD and I am contemplating using component for my 9200 Bell receiver since I am losing hair every day over this issue.:(
I have been told to try a different HDMI cable so I guess that is my next step.
