trellaine 2006-09-22, 01:26 AM Hmmm I read somewhere that you have to use HDMI in order to get the full resolution? Sorry I forget where I read that but I think it came with the instructions to the Toshiba HD DVD Player. Components won't give 1080i?
When I check for the firmware I see the following:
Update
1.3/1.09/2.0R
How do i know what firmware I have
DJDiggler 2006-09-23, 12:06 AM Poolshark: Just a heads up: Visions has the HD-A1 For $698 (http://www.visions.ca/flyers/pdf/flyer7.pdf) with a $100 gift card (use for movies?) Comes to just under the price you have but if your ordering from the net Visions may be a better option for you...
And a good place to get HDMI switchers is monoprice.com, cheap & you can set em up with your universal remote. I don't know why useing a switcher would be bad? Same technology used in eithernet... it's a digital signal so it can't really be degraded any can it?
trellaine: Component will pass 1080i fine, can't do 1080p. If the studios ever start using the "flag" your SOL on component also.

Your firmware is 1.3. Call Toshiba Canada to get the 2.0 update disc (I received it from them.)
james99 2006-09-23, 08:32 AM I downloaded it from the net and burned a CD and then installed it. Toshiba doesn't provide this service but if you know where to look.....

If one decides to download 2.0 from an unofficial site, suggest to use 8x or 16x speed at most to create the image when doing the CD burn. When the file is stored on your desktop, simply click on it to open up Nero.
However, getting it from Toshiba will put you on the list for further updates by disc. Many have had problems with online updates via LAN connection (leaving a DVD in the tray during the Ethernet update can be fatal for the player).
james99 2006-09-23, 09:17 AM Using the Lan connection can destroy your machine. The firmware has bugs in it. Use the CD only.
QuickSilver 2006-09-25, 02:55 PM Ok so my HD-A1 is on the way. I have a 2X1 HDMI switch on the way as well. I have been reading as much as I can about the player and how to get the most out of it. I do not have nay HD-DVD movies yet...so here are my plans:
1. Purchase a good disc from Amazon like Serenity since I like the movie.
2. Obtain 2.0 firmware on the net and burn it to disc instead of using the lan option to upgrade the firmware since I have read about some issues with it.
3. I have a bit of a dilema. I think i will hook up the player with the analog outputs since my RX-V1500 yammie receiver does not have HDMI inputs. I have read both good and bad things about doing it this way. Since I will be watching 99% SD DVD's on the unit for some time do u think that is the best way?
4. Teach my harmony 880 to control the switch and HD-A1. Hopefully will not have trouble with this.
I am excited to get the unit. The only reason I bought it was due to the price on ebay.
Nico333 2006-09-28, 06:08 AM I brought my player from the US to Sweden this august, and I have really only one problem – the damn remote control. EVERY time I´m watching a movie and tries to pause, fast forward, I press the wrong button. And no backlight - what´s that about. Otherwise I love the machine and the image is fantastic.

Do yourself a favor and get a Harmony remote. Control all your components with one remote.
QuickSilver 2006-10-01, 05:23 PM So I updated to 2.0 firmware. Should I hook it up using 5.1 analog? Will this use the Toshiba DAC's instead of my Yamaha DAC's? Which would eb better to use...I am a little confused on which to use optical or analog.

Your Yamaha decoders are limited to DD, DTS and PCM 2 channel.
To experience DD Plus, DTS-HD (core at this time) and DD TrueHD (after update 2.0) you need to use multichannel 5.1 analogs, unless your HDTV has HDMI input and your receiver has HDMI inputs/output.
If you use 5.1 multichannel analogs, you will first need to complete the settings for 5.1 multichannel. And that is Distance for each speaker, speaker size (SMALL in 99% of cases) and dB settings plus crossover in Hz.
Concerning dB settings: Because the subwoofer line from the player is 10 dB lower than it should be, here is what I did: Each speaker is set at -9 dB but the subwoofer is left at 0 dB.
Crossover: My Yamaha has a fixed crossover of 90 Hz. After trials I find that the best crossover setting in the player to match my digital performance is 100 Hz and not 80 Hz.
With the above settings, I set my Master volume for the Yamaha at -30 dB (whereas with digital connection it would be at -35 (at most) and sometimes at -39 Hz.
I can tell you that playing CDs with the analogs is very enjoyable. The player's 4 DACs and 7 DSPs makes it an extraordinary CD player. The sound is more silky and you hear more details from instruments. With voice alone, the signer is like standing before you.

I setup using the coax connection to my 5 year old yamaha receiver. My receiver only does DD 5.1 (no DTS or HDMI). I initially selected bitstream and got no audio... switching to PCM gave me 2 ch stereo.
Will using the 5.1 analogue cables give me DD plus or at the very least regular DD?? Or would a software upgrade fix this problem?

Do you mean using the Yamaha setup on my receiver? Or on the HD-A1? I have used YPAO already and things seem ok using optical. I did just upgrade the firmware to 2.0.

Make the version 2.0 update and use the 5.1 multichannel analogs.

What about the setting son my Yamaha receiver for Multi Channel Input? Leave those alone?
timbo 2006-10-02, 02:51 AM My first impression of the HD-A1 is very positive. Set-up was a breeze and playback of Swordfish was great. (first time I've seen the movie)
I would like to offer my thanks to my fellow DHCers for the good advice and recommendations offered in these forums.
You have made my experience a positive one. "Thank you."

The Back panel on the RX-V1500 shows the 6 channel analog inputs for an external decoder.

Your speaker settings for distance, size and level should remain as they are for SPDIF. When you return to digital connection listening, simply make sure to lower the master volume.
QuickSilver 2006-10-02, 07:30 AM Ok I will try the analog tonight. I will remember to boost the subwoofer output since alot are saying it is low from the default setup. Not really looking forward to having to crank the volume up but I will let my ears decide which is better for SD-DVD's.
I only have one HD-DVD so far "We Were Soldiers". I only run a 5.1 setup on my Yamaha.

With the 5.1 multichannel analogs, the subwoofer is about -10 dB lower than it should be. To compensate and not have to increase Gain at the sub, I elected to set speaker levels in the HD-A1 for 5.1 channels at -9 dB but leaving the sub at 0 dB. That way, I simply need to increase the Yamaha's master volume and get very nice results for HD DVDs and for CDs.
