I've been told that an article on the digital transition is planned for this Saturday's Globe and Mail.

From the Globe and Mail

Not your fathers rabbit ears (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/technology/tech-news/not-your-fathers-rabbit-ears/article2134220/)

Props to the DH and a few members mentioned inside the article!

Kate Taylor is obviously a very bright writer. That article is one of the only ones I have read that does not contain any errors. Good job!

Kudos to Kate Taylor and the Digital Home members who participated in Kate's research efforts.

Kate was very thorough and spent much effort on gathering some 'real life OTA results' in great detail.

Also keep an eye on this G&M poll:

On Aug. 31, Canadians broadcasters, not including CBC, will turn off their analog over-the-air signals. Will that affect you?
a] Yes, I'll lose my TV
b] No, I have cable/satellite
c] No, I'm already watching digital over-the-air TV
d] I have no idea
So far a] is 11% and c] is 14%, so it appears that 25% of the voters rely on OTA.

This thread is about the key points of the G&M article:

-Over the air reception is free and legal.
-Free including HST.
-Making your own antenna is cheap and easy to do.
-Equipment is a one time investment, no monthly [taxable] fees.
-You may get only 5 channels or you may get 50 channels.
-Most OTA are full HD quality and appear to be better quality than Cable/Sat reception.

I appreciate her article but I wish she hadn't kept calling us "enthusiasts". To me, that implies that OTA is some esoteric hobby for a few tech savvy nerds. She reinforced that impression with the DIY antenna instructions which I found difficult to understand without a schematic. (And I've built a couple of DBGH's)

These ARE your father's rabbit ears. The technology is exactly the same and just as easy to use.

There was a reason that the Globe could not publish a sketch, so we opted to just go with providing the link to the Stealth Hawk thread.

The headline title is "Over-the-air enthusiaists getting the most out of free TV"
I believe that "not-your-fathers-rabbit-ears" was simply adopted within the link to the article.

In this morning's print version of the Globe & Mail the article now has the headline:

"Not your father's rabbit ears"

with the subtitle:

"Tech-savvy over-the-air enthusiasts use antennae to grab crisp high definition TV signals - all free"

and the print version contains a sidebar graphic with the build parameters of the Stealth Hawk, beginning with a smallish diagram of the completed item.

The article appears in the Globe Arts section on page R4 here on the West Coast. It may appear elsewhere in other local editions.

If you are enquiring about the Stealth Hawk antenna found in the G&M article you'll need to use the following thread in the Antenna Research & Development forum where it was born:

I can't resist. I must repost the first comment on Hugh's article. ;)

Ditch the cable, and get back to the future.

Just before reading Hugh's 'tips and tools' article and seeing that reader's comment, I have posted this: :p

Tried to make the point (but it didn't make it to print in the article) that while everything is going wireless in last few years, only cable has gone the other way in trying to preserve the archaic wire-to-wire connection. Even within the home or business office everything is going wireless, including audio speakers, routers and LANs.

'Enthusiasts' should have coined the term Wireless TV and would have been much less ambiguous than OTA. Is is too late to change? We could even go as far as to call it Wireless HD TV.

Certainly novices would instantaneously recognize something familiar and might only momentarily think it refers to satellite TV. OTA is an acronym you initially just tune-out.
