Will Shaw Cable Offer Cellular Phones?

My guess is if Shaw doesn't get taken over by Bell or Rogers soon then they'll sign some kind of agreement with Bell to carry their phones.

But that's like flirting with the enemy, no?...lol

c'mon, guys do you really need to quote the entire previous post. It really annoys members and it really doesn't make it any easier to read.

anyway.

Yes, Shaw has already gone on record as saying they would be introducing wireless to the marketplace. The slowdown right now is the Digital Phone implementation.

My guess is Shaw will team up with Rogers since Rogers doesn't really compete with Shaw (different jurisdictions) and the two companies have done deals before.

Videotron recently teamed up with Rogers for the same reason.

I recall talking to shaw CSR about the same thing when i switched to shaw digital phone and she had mentioned rogers as being the carrier. Anyway for what its worth, it appears to be comming its just a matter of when

Well, since I've been a Shaw customer for a looooong time and a Rogers customer for 12 years (wireless), perhaps there's something in this for me if they offer a bundle.

I think it would be Rogers too because I work at Portage Place Shopping Centre in Winnipeg and for awhile they were promoting their phone service in the Rogers wireless/Air source store there but my question would be would they offer things like the long distance that they offer on their landline? or would they be like all other cell phone companies?.

I'd be surprised, because Rogers bought out Sprint and can now offer bundled land line/wireless accounts. I'm thinking Shaw will have to do it the hard way and develop their own or buy someone out ('cept there's not too many players left).

If Shaw partners with Rogers for Cellular it will have to be a real good offer to get me as a customer, as I am not really a GSM type of guy, I like my CDMA phones like MTS and Telus. (and plus I have heard all the horror stories about Rogers from many people)

But if shaw does partner up with rogers, how would that be any different from me walking into a rogers wireless store and getting a cell phone?

Also, I don't think they will set up their own network, that is so very expensive to do. They may piggy back off someone else I suppose, like virgin does to Rogers wireless.

And I'm with you Shawguy, I'm a CDMA guy. Lol maybe not for any specific reason at the time when I got my cell phone from Telus, but it was a really good rate plan. But now I suppose I like CDMA for the right reasons.

Time to dig this old thread up from the grave!

Shaw owns their own spectrum now so...and that is publicly known. I can foresee these types of sweet scenarios: You are at a coffee shop and want to make a call on your cell phone...hey there is Wi-Fi here! So your phone connects via Wi-Fi to your home PC and calls out from your home phone and thus no cell or long distance charges. Oh I have said too much!:)

It would be nice to see Shaw offer wireless and a bundle. Right now MTS in Manitoba, offers an additional discount ON YOUR WIRELESS if you have MTS Internet. It is $10 on BBerries, so with that discount and MTS offering "promos" that are $10 - $15 lower than Shaw it becomes tempting to switch the whole TV/phone/internet over to MTS for less money AND get a wireless discount.

Come on Shaw... do SOMETHING!!! Switching suppliers gets tedious!!!!!!

Let's hope this never happens - you'll be likely to have 3-5 seconds of dropped audio for every 20 minutes of phone conversation, and Shaw will blame it on the other caller!

*nyuk nyuk*

(But yes - MTS in Winnipeg has a SWEET deal on Smartphones if you bundle TV and/or internet - $34.99 for unlimited cell data? You betcha!)

If any of you payed close attention to the Spectrum Auction that was held a few years ago you will see that Shaw won a LOT of spectrum in western canada..

Now as for cellsites.. my college does realestate for wind mobile here ni calgary and she mentioned she lostout on bids for cellsites vs shaw.. which tome.. its all hush hush with shaws wireless service and they will just one day turn the on switch and BAMMMMMMMMMMMMM bubdled with your home service and save more money.. sorta like bell did or stilldoes out west with their One Bill service

Looks like Shaw will be going mobile late this year or early next year, should be good.

seems like my spacebar was not working the other day.. lol whoops!

but yeah.. if they launch cell service.. id jump on that bandwagon right away as I never leave the city except for the casual road trip and when thats the case.. its just that a road trip.. cellphone goes off..

I was just on the phone with Shaw technical support (PVR issue) and at the end of the conversation asked about this cell service rumour. He confirmed that Shaw will be offering cell service, but figures it'll be about 18 months before it goes live.

just to add to this..

was talking to a CSR ..changing some TV stuff. at the end tells me about Shaw Phone and how i could get it for $xx/month. Told him i dont want or need home phone as i have a cell..if Shaw had Cell service i would go for it. He goes on to tell me that Shaw is going to offer a cell service soon. Said 6months to a year.
said that is good to know as my current(Telus) plan is up in Oct .. will wait and not sign up for another 3yr plan if that is the case.

Shaw just made some big announcement about cell phone service a few weeks ago. It was when they announced their most recent financial results. I'm sure they said the service would start sometime in 2011 but other than that there were no other details. They didn't even say which markets they would start out in let alone anything about prices. Maybe in six months they'll announce more details.

The best place for this discussion is in Wireless Phones forum where there is an existing thread (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=123375).
