: Apple's Boot Camp (run Windows on your Mac)
PokerChip 2006-04-05, 05:41 PM The annoucement has been out since this morning (check out DHC main page or Apple's website), and I think this is a great move on Apple's part.
I run Windows almost exclusively for games and I have a decent "beige box" running XP in my home office for general tasks.
I think I will sell the beige box and get an Intel based iMac and install XP on it. I can then use my 17 inche flat panel monitor as a second monitor to increase screen real estate dramatically.
The thing I'll be the most happy about is the space I'll save under my desk, the 25 to 30 decibels of constant humming driving me up the wall these days and the heat in that small room when the door is closed which becomes infernal.
BorderLine 2006-04-10, 01:20 AM Anybody install bootcamp on their macbook pro yet?
I'm thinking about getting either the macbook or thinkpad t60, any suggestions?
lordshipmayhem 2006-04-11, 06:32 PM I'm curious: just what IS the big difference between Apple's Boot Camp on the one hand, and LILO or Grub on the other? Aside, that is, from the fact it's running on a MacTel.
1) Will LILO or Grub work to dual-boot a MacTel like they do with ordinary Intels?
2) Does the Boot Camp software cost anything?
The news reports I've seen have been magnificently scanty on any actual information.

2) Does the Boot Camp software cost anything?
1) Appears that LILO requires a BIOS. Grub appears to work with either a BIOS or OpenFirmware. MacTel's have EFI.
2) Public beta is free. Likely to become part of next OSX release.

iFourm 2008-08-06, 01:46 PM I need windows for work and i was wondering how bootcamp is working for everyone.
QuickSilver 2008-08-06, 01:55 PM I have a MBP and have been running Windows XP pro wonderfully since Bootcamp came out. I upgraded to Leopard with no problems.
Same here - on my Macbook 2.0GHz C2D, WinXP runs better/faster than on my 1.7GHz Thinkpad.
Speaking of Bootcamp, I recently upgraded my hard drive from a 120GB to 250GB, and while SuperDuper made a simple backup/transition from old to new, I'm trying to figure out how to get my Bootcamp/XP partition from the smaller drive to a newer one.
I've tried a couple different backup/restore/imaging programs, and finally got one to do the restore, but it won't boot. :(
Everything is there on the XP partition (I can see the files there from the Mac Finder), but no luck booting from "OFF", or from VMware Fusion.
Any ideas out there? Software/procedure i should try using?
QuickSilver 2008-08-07, 07:23 AM Did you create the Bootcamp partition first? I have read that using winclone will work.
The drive has to be formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a GUID partition scheme. That will create the Bootcamp ready drive partition that is bootable and ready for your restored image.
Yeah - on my new drive, I actually created an XP partition and installed XP using bootcamp assistant, but then realized there were a lot of small settings and whatever on my old drive that I missed, and would rather not try to have to re-create; hence my desire to simply bring over my XP partition from the "old" drive.
I'll hunt down Winclone and give that a shot, though - something to do while watching 'lympics. :)
Jeff Flowerday 2008-08-08, 11:21 AM I've got a MacMini running Vista Media Center perfectly. Great form factor for at the TV.
