Again...I'll believe it when I see it...

But my contact who told me in December that a firmware upgrade was coming in January has called me back to inform me that the upgrade will be in stages (based on regions) starting January 8th. He was not sure which version is coming but said his information clearly indicated that it would bring their systems to the same level as the rest of North American SA boxes and it would allow Start At Beginning and eliminate the kick-out to live.

We might be almost there....

Tell your contact he should start with Kitchener-Waterloo/Grand River region right away. ;)

But I'm with you, I'll believe it when I see it. (but I can't wait to see it)

And I'll be the first to start the 'When is Rogers getting 1.89?' thread. ;)

Agreed. I can't tell you how many times I've considered taking my box to work to upgrade the FW on my own. If only it would work...

And I'll be the first to start the 'When is Rogers getting 1.89?' thread. ;)

Hey wait! Didn't I already start that by mentioning it's existence in the first place? :D

Bruce Fan - Like you, I'm looking forward to the removal of the 'kick out to live' feature. Also, I can't wait to get the 128x FF feature!

So out of curiosity, let's say you brought a box with 1.88 firmware, and Rogers for some unknown reason authorized the box (and yes, I know this wouldn't normally happen, I'm speaking hypothetically). The first boot, would it downgrade the firmware to match what Rogers has? Or would it just not work? I'm asking purely from a technical standpoint, since obviously that would never happen.

And yes, since you brought up 1.89, you've created a desire for it. So it's your fault. Now I won't be happy with 1.88. :)

(actually, I can't wait to come home, be 18 minutes into an hour show, and not have to worry if I'm going to be kicked out or not...racing against the kick-out bug)

Bruce Fan, I guess at some point, one of these rumours has to be true.

I have created a new thread for when the blissful day happens!

Hey hugh:

If my SA8300HD at home still has 1.87 but my SA8300HDs at work are all running 1.88, am I allowed to post in the new thread?
(Just stirring the pot) ;)

Yes. On a DNCS in the field (labs are different), you configure a default download image for every type of set-top box you are going to deploy. Every time a set-top starts up, it checks it's ROM image against the defined 'default' download image. If they are different, the box will download the 'default' image. It really does make a lot of sense as that ensures that all boxes on your headend are running the same fw/sw.

But that doesn't stop me from whining about it.

I have been told by an employee of Rogers that the software upgrade will begin Sunday at midnight in areas north of Toronto and in Scarborough.

It will take 4 nights per DNCS (Server) barring any problems and there are three DNCS that control Ontario so about 3 weeks to completion since they won't risk dig changes like that on a weekend.

Once you've recieved the update post what you learn in the following thread

I remember a post from way back when (2005, I believe) regarding the US Cable companies implementing the 1.88 firmware, and a poster sarcastically stating that Rogers will probably get it in 2007. Whomever that poster was, was dead-on.

Anyone in the know about a firmware upgrade for the 8000HD?

It'll be a firmware update for the entire 8x00 series I would assume.

Drat. :)

Here's hoping DNCS E goes well, so that the time for DNCS A and B are sped up. I wonder why DNCS E is 'different' than A and B? What legacy equipment would they keep on there? 8000's? 3000's? 3200's?

I wonder if this:
Allow Digital Terminals to support the upcoming changes to Daylight Savings Time
is the major factor to get these updated now? Or could this be forced on the head-end?

Also, I liked this:
6. Disable Brick mode - To ensure that customer terminals to do not default into Brick mode during the upgrade.
Always a good thing to add to your software...the ability to disable 'brick mode'. I assume this is different than when one talks about their hardware being 'bricked' after a firmware update, meaning that it's as useless as a brick. Sounded kind of funny to me. :)

Regardless, very...very...very...super-cool.

The good part of being last is hopefully any issues are resolved by the time it gets to us.

I doubt this is being driven by timezone changes as the PVRs have always failed to handle the change properly (at least for scheduled recordings).

True, except that this march is the first time it's been moved ahead by a couple weeks, and perhaps without this update, our boxes would be an hour off from the rest of the universe....or the rest of the people that observe DST/EST. :) But you're absolutely right, it's definately never handled the change properly before, so I can't imagine it being any different now....

I'll take issues and being first over no issues and being last any day. I've always been a beta tester...and always will be. :) (of course, I know I'm the minority...Hehe...)

The fact that they're mentioning the DST change in the reason for upgrade gives me faint hope that they may actually roll out 1.89 instead of 1.88. I'm not 100% certain that the 1.88 firmware had all of the DST fixes in it. But I could be wrong so don't get overly excited just yet.

Too late. I'm now officially overly excited. Way to go. (I was overly excited when I finally realized I'll be able to use my PVR the way a PVR should be used...and will no longer have to plan my viewing habits around it's oddities)

Edit: You know what else would be cool if we got 1.89? Laughing at all the Videotron folks who have mocked us for so very, very long. ;) (kidding of course)
