kalak 2007-01-22, 02:21 AM I was unable to play back previous recordings (has happened a number of times before). I cold reboot it as previously done. And now all the previously recorded programming and scheduled programming is gone! Tried reboot a few more times, no luck :( . The firmware was 1.89.16.2.
Any chance of recovering the recordings? I have not tried recording anything new, in the hope that there is a chance of recovery and I don't want to overwrite anything.
What should I do now? It is a rental unit. Just ask for an exchange? Or should I try HD reformating first?
quentin0 2007-01-22, 07:39 AM anyone in london received the update yet? both of my 8300hd's are still sitting at 1.87.....
maddogmaulucci 2007-01-22, 08:28 AM quentin0 - no update yet here near pond mills.
daveharr 2007-01-22, 12:05 PM The previously updated areas have all been updated on Tuesday mornings, so you'll probably get the update overnight tonight.
JoeSoap 2007-01-22, 12:50 PM I wonder why the schedule never got compressed as was hinted in the announcement? There have been a couple of issues reported here at DHC but overall it looks like the upgrade has gone very well.
As someone who is at the end of the schedule, I was hoping we would get it sooner that scheduled but that didn't happen. In any case, we should be there in the next day or two.
kalak 2007-01-22, 01:23 PM Hmm... Why was my thread moved to this one? So the fact that I lost all my recordings was related to the new firmware upgrade? I was thinking this was more related to defective hardware. It would be hard to get any discussion of my problem as this would simply be lost in this huge 200+ posts thread.

rimgrund 2007-01-22, 03:40 PM kalak: It's definitely not a SARA problem, so it probably shouldn't have been moved here. When I got the SARA update, my programming was not affected at all.
As you said, it sounds hardware-related.
As for the chances of getting the programming back, unless you approached a hard drive specialist, it's gone. I doubt the programs are worth thousands of dollars to you, so that's not really a viable option.
In terms of sticking with the unit or not, you may want to try an HDD defrag first to see if that resolves the problem. Be careful: an HDD defrag will erase all content on the hard drive, but maybe will stop a serious problem like this from happening again. Also, this should be a LAST resort kind of thing - as in, "If this doesn't fix it, I'm returning the damn thing."
nathan 2007-01-23, 07:15 AM We got the update (WOOHOO!) in K-W last night, so I happened to be up at 3AM, and went and scheduled Nothing But Trailers to record every tuesday and friday at 6:30AM.
Anyways, I think I forgot to turn the PVR off, or change it from an all-music channel, because when I woke up, the PVR had the words 'Hit any key to watch TV', and then when I hit a key, it gave me the 'Please wait, powering up harddrive'. It's cool if it powers down the HD on music channels after so-long, but the thing is, it didn't record Nothing But Trailers.
I tried re-setting it to record this morning at 6:45, and it worked fine...but still a bit worrysome. Probably just a fluke, but I'm going to try it again Friday morning and see if it's repeatable. Weird.
Other than that...SO nice to have the new features.
Next I'll have to try my 3250HD with mythtv.
The fact that the screensaver kicked in, shouldn't preclude any recordings, since recordings should happen whether the unit is on or off.
Perhaps just a fluke...
nathan 2007-01-23, 10:41 AM Well, yes, that's the way it's supposed to work, I'm just reporting how it DID work.
wlorcb 2007-01-23, 04:55 PM The 1.89 FW update has been rolled out to Brantford Ontario sometime during the night.
jvincent 2007-01-23, 07:00 PM Got home tonight and lo and behold, 1.89 has reached Ottawa.
PakMan 2007-01-23, 09:00 PM I agree Ottawa has begun, I was hooking up my portable DVD to the VCR and on my SD 1840, after I powered it off, it started tumbling through a bunch of code. It must have downloaded the code and upgraded itself. I guess I better to that three finger salute to check. ;)
gordonb 2007-01-23, 09:03 PM Yup - 1.89 is in Ottawa - Now that the wife has finally gone to bed I'm off to try the firewire on my D-VHS deck & HTPC - progress at last
