What is in the works to replace the model 6000 HD IRD?
(I understand the 6000 is no longer in production...)

has it not suffered the same fate as the Motorola HDD-201?
something along the lines that it can't output Closed Caption text overtop of and HD signal? And thus a new model is in the works?
(If I'm wrong, or mistaken, accept my appologies).

this is the best I can find, as far as links go..link (http://www.canadian-tv.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=HDTV&Number=73806&page=&view=&sb=&o= &fpart=1&vc=1)

Bent, you may be right.

ExpressVu receivers are made by Echostar (DISH Network) and DISH Network is still selling the 6000 complete with various add-ons (8VSB module and Enhanced HD adapter).

The 5100 (the ExpressVU PVR which is the DISH model 501) is definitely a candidate for replacement since DISHNET is selling a 5100 with a bigger harddrive (508) and a dual tuner model (721).

Anybody know otherwise?

You are right. New FCC rules on CC took effect on July 1, 2002. Products manufactured after that date, that do not meet rules, cannot be sold in US. So all E* 6000 units, in stock, were pre 06/02 production. Same for Motorola HDD20X units.

Charlie has a $400usd, non OTA, HD receiver in beta test right now. So far the Vaporware 921 (dual HDtuner/pvr) is still vaporware - with a few mock units on the show circuit for the 3rd year.

Interesting and thanks for the update but it does beg the question, Is Echostar still making them for Canada?

Sure the question exists, but if you take a quick look at how many 6000's are sold here, compared to the USA, I doubt the Canadian end is even a drop in the bucket...

I'm sure ExVu will take whatever replaces The Dish hardware down South.

If Bev goes with a new HD receiver, they still have to program all the software etc to go with it and then deal with all the irate customers who are having problems.

Then they have to support two HD receivers.

Considering the small volumes in Canada, Might be a lot cheaper and easier to just stick with the 6000 for another year or two.

You make an excellent point about the irate customers,
and if expressvu is doing their own software, then you could be even more righter. :D

I may have missed some thing here but.. Is it possible that they could cure the Closed Caption problem with a software upgrade?

I don't know, but my oppinion is that they can't, the blanking interval needed for CC timing in SDTV is not present in HDTV.

But this doesn't answer why it can't be made to work...
