Hi Mr. Score. I'll also email Cogeco, but do you know if people in Cogeco territory (I'm in Oakville) are in the plans for The Score HD? I am a Hard Core sports fan, so I don't want to miss out on anything. Thanks.

Cogeco does take contribution from the Rogers sonnet and has access to The Score HD. I would suggest you call Cogeco and ask this question, as I am not at liberty to speak on any on going negotiations with Cogeco at this time if this changes I will post an update in this thread.

There are some limiting factors technically with regards to HD distribution. The main being bandwidth Rogers has invested heavily in upgrading their tap to set distribution and are able to carry upwards of 1gig to most homes. If Cogeco has areas that are still 550mhz and have not upgraded to carry at least 850mhz then this will limit what channels they carry if they are using ASI pass through and assigning there own VCN (virtual channel number) as I said the best course of action would be to call and express your interest.

Thx for your support

Thx for the info I spoke to the head of engineering at Roger and was told all problems were solved. I'm still getting reports from viewers and it appears to be wide spread. Will post when I have more info.

Same question as the Cogeco user - except regarding Shaw:

Are you talking to Shaw Cable about carrying the The Score HD?

Thanks.

P.S. I know your answer has a 99% chance of being NO as Shaw likes to do things a little slower than the rest.

This is a test mode for our service we are still having problems with distribution and there outstanding agreements that need to be put to bed. The purpose of this test is real world and has shown us to be the right choice. We will anounce publicaly the offical HD rollout and actualy there's a lot more than stretching going on if you look closley. Once our roll out is made public with a hard date I will post an over view of our offering and our go forward plans and welcome ypur comments, complaints or suggestions. I feel that once you have the complete picture and undertanding of The Score's mission stament you will better understand the technical parameters of our HD service.

Once again thanks for your interest and support. I would still ask if anyone is currently seeing the Barker Banner for 507 and has a black screen please post your location. This will help us determine course of action and next steps.

Thx for your interest and help with our HD offering.

I have a feeling this was accidental, but a few days ago, The Score aired a UK Poker Championship in proper Widescreen. The feed on the SD channel was anamorphically compressed (i.e. everyone looked tall and skinny), while on your Test HD service, since it was stretched to fill the 16:9 screen, everything looked correct.

As we are in the transition phase this may happen. Once the dust settles on my end I plan to post an over view to give you all a complete picture of our HD roll out. I feel that it is important for individuals such as your selves that I consider to be in the top 5% of the HD knowledge base to have a complete understanding of the big picture and the challenges that I face as an independent network to deliver an acceptable offering to the HD viewer as a whole. My choices were not based on the same driving force as most others have idetified.

Once again thanks for your interest and support and please continue to post status of our signal integrity

I just want to thank Score Board for both taking the time and making an effort to keep us all informed as well as actively seeking our feedback. This should be an example for all broadcasters to follow.

I'm on Shaw, so it doesn't matter to me, but checking the NCAA B-ball schedule this week, I see that Score plans to show some conference tournament games in HD.

It's hard for me to comment on Shaw at present we approached them with our offering some time ago. The scenario with Shaw is different than other BDU, s and presents us with a challenge that we can't meet obligations on with out affecting our mission statement. Shaw has advantages over other BDU's since they own Cancom which through a creative positioning of acquiring space from Telesat on Aniks bird have become in reality the only choice for all broadcast distribution in Canada for distrobution to Cable Head Ends. Of course the cost of bandwidth and shrinking availability will have a direct affect on systems that use this delivery platform. You also have to understand that the Broadcaster is responsible for all cost of distribution of there content. The current yearly rate is 100,000 per mb and an HD signal requires a minimum of 14 mbs with out a stat mux the cost to a Broadcaster would be 1.4 million per anum plus the fiber costs to get it there on a 20 mbs ASI fiber loop which will be about 24,000 per year this is with out even factoring program material. Cancom distributes on the KU platform. This is done for one reason since C-band is far superior for signal strength and bandwidth, That reason is that Star Choice DTH dishes look at the same signal as head ends. This means there is no distribution costs to there DTH subs. With BEV and Rogers the only cost we face is the fiber loop.

If you understand what I have detailed then you can understand why the offering on Star Choice may be limited since CRTC rules state that the HD service must mirror the SD service with only a small amount of different programming. What that means to a broadcaster is that operating an HD service will generate no revenue and there is no ROI and only large capital operating costs wich soar as a Network such as The Score produces a very large percent of its programing themselves. I don't know of any other business that feels operating at this kind of loss an acceptable standard. As a private broadcaster we feel that as we progress to a fully HD 720p offering that the loss is acceptable looking at long term plan that offers only the chance of break even after many many years of loss.

Don’t feel to bad for BEV having to face the costs of unsubsidized DTH distribution who do you think owns the birds that Telesat sold space to Cancom on, that allowed this unfair advantage and cost prohibitive feasibility…………Bell they own Anik and Nimq birds so in the end who losses you and me. T

he Scores SD service is 5.4 mbs on a stat mux and delivers it signal to Rogers, ExpressVu and Cancom via a 270mb 601 with AC3 embeded audio. We will be taking advantge of 5.1 on our SD feed from HD productions on our down converted HD feed.

More FYI to come when I have time

We are up on all Rogers systems as of 4:45pm turns out it was an IT issue. Don’t know how that could ever happen, but in the world of convergence CTRL-ALT_DELETE is the norm now. Oh I long for the days Tubes, Transistors and 2” tape, just seems sometimes that technology out paces serviceability, which 24-7 operations can’t except

Thx for all your input on this problem, your support is greatly appreciated. I will try my best to keep you up to date and once we have are final offering up and running I will post a brief for your review and input.

As I said I will post briefs on the following after our public anouncment.
